The effect of uncertainty on learning in game-like environments
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Considering the role of games for educational purposes, there has an increase in interest among educators
in applying strategies used in popular games to create more engaging learning environments.
Learning is more fun and appealing in digital educational games and, as a result, it may become more
effective. However, few research studies have been conducted to establish principles based on empirical
research for designing engaging and entertaining games so as to improve learning. One of the essential
characteristics of games that has been unexplored in the literature is the concept of uncertainty. This
study examines the effect of uncertainty on learning outcomes. In order to better understand this effect
on learning, a game-like learning tool was developed to teach a database concept in higher education
programs of software engineering. The tool is designed in two versions: one including uncertainty and
the other including no uncertainty. The experimental results of this study reveal that uncertainty enhances
learning. Uncertainty is found to be positively associated with motivation. As motivation increases,
participants tend to spend more time on answering the questions and to have higher accuracy in
these questions
Optical transition rates of a meso-substituted thiacarbocyanine in methanol-in-oil reverse miscelles
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We report the photophysical properties of 3,3′-diethyl-5,5′-dichloro-9-phenylthiacarbocyanine (DDPT) in methanol-in-oil (m/o) reverse micellar systems which form methanol droplets stabilized with anionic surfactant aerosol-OT (AOT) in n-heptane. The fluorescence quantum yield of DDPT is enhanced by a factor of 17 in the methanol droplet in comparison with bulk methanol. The fluorescence lifetimes of DDPT in m/o reverse micelles are prolonged up to 2.2 ns with increasing molar ratio of methanol to surfactant (w0=[MeOH]/[AOT]), whereas the fluorescence lifetime of DDPT in bulk methanol is 75 ps. The non-radiative rate constants of DDPT in the droplets are decreased by a factor of 40, resulting in a remarkable enhancement in quantum yields, indicating that internal motions of DDPT in the droplets are significantly reduced due to strong electrostatic interactions between the positively charged DDPT and the negatively charged sulfonate head-groups of AOT and the spatial confinement induced by the reverse micellar structure. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. An Overview and Assessment of Wireless Technologies and Co- existence of ZigBee, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Devices
AbstractWi-Fi, ZigBee and Bluetooth wireless communication systems utilize the Industrial Scientific and Medical-(ISM) Band, which results in a high mutual interference between these technologies since they all these systems operate at the same or very close frequency bands. The interference problem increases with an in-device Co-existence (technologies existing on same device). This is primarily due to the characteristics of each technology such as access mechanism, frame structure, peak transmit power and frequency of operation. This work describes the interference between the Wi-Fi mostly as an aggressor on Bluetooth and ZigBee wireless networks. So the experimental analysis of the coexistence of these three technologies in an assumed home environment is studied especially when ZigBee is enabled for a Home Automation Network where there could be close proximity of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. The obtained result shows that there is severe degradation on ZigBee and Bluetooth packet transmission of packets as well as re-transmission of ZigBee packets when Wi-Fi is operating
p53 missense but not truncation mutations are associated with low levels of p21CIP1/WAF1 mRNA expression in primary human sarcomas
Many growth-suppressing signals converge to control the levels of the CDK inhibitor p21CIP1/WAF1. Some human cancers exhibit low levels of expression of p21CIP1/WAF1and mutations in p53 have been implicated in this down-regulation. To evaluate whether the presence of p53 mutations was related to the in vivo expression of p21CIP1/WAF1 mRNA in sarcomas we measured the p21CIP1/WAF1 mRNA levels for a group of 71 primary bone and soft tissue tumours with known p53 status. As expected, most tumours with p53 mutations expressed low levels of p21CIP1/WAF1 mRNA. However, we identified a group of tumours with p53 gene mutations that exhibited normal or higher levels of p21CIP1/WAF1 mRNA. The p53 mutations in the latter group were not the common missense mutations in exons 4–9, but were predominantly nonsense mutations predicted to result in truncation of the p53 protein. The results of this study suggest that different types of p53 mutations can have different effects on the expression of downstream genes such as p21CIP1/WAF1 in human sarcomas. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co
Microstructural defect properties of InGaN/GaN blue light emitting diode structures
Cataloged from PDF version of article. In this paper, we study structural and morphological properties of metal-organic chemical vapour deposition-grown InGaN/GaN light emitting diode (LED) structures with different indium (In) content by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL) and current-voltage characteristic (I-V). We have found out that the tilt and twist angles, lateral and vertical coherence lengths of mosaic blocks, grain size, screw and edge dislocation densities of GaN and InGaN layers, and surface roughness monotonically vary with In content. Mosaic defects obtained due to temperature using reciprocal lattice space map has revealed optimized growth temperature for active InGaN layer of MQW LED. It has been observed in this growth temperature that according to AFM result, LED structure has high crystal dimension, and is rough whereas according to PL and FTIR results, bandgap energy shifted to blue, and energy peak half-width decreased at high values. According to I-V measurements, it was observed that LED reacted against light at optimized temperature. In conclusion, we have seen that InGaN MQW structure's structural, optical and electrical results supported one another
Missense mutation in the ATPase, aminophospholipid transporter protein ATP8A2 is associated with cerebellar atrophy and quadrupedal locomotion
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Cerebellar ataxia, mental retardation and dysequilibrium syndrome is a rare and heterogeneous condition. We investigated a consanguineous family from Turkey with four affected individuals exhibiting the condition. Homozygosity mapping revealed that several shared homozygous regions, including chromosome 13q12. Targeted next-generation sequencing of an affected individual followed by segregation analysis, population screening and prediction approaches revealed a novel missense variant, p.I376M, in ATP8A2. The mutation lies in a highly conserved C-terminal transmembrane region of E1 E2 ATPase domain. The ATP8A2 gene is mainly expressed in brain and development, in particular cerebellum. Interestingly, an unrelated individual has been identified, in whom mental retardation and severe hypotonia is associated with a de novo t(10;13) balanced translocation resulting with the disruption of ATP8A2. These findings suggest that ATP8A2 is involved in the development of the cerebro-cerebellar structures required for posture and gait in humans. © 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved
BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in Turkish breast/ovarian families and young breast cancer patients
To date, BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in breast and/or ovarian patients have not been characterized in the Turkish population. We investigated the presence of BRCA mutations in 53 individuals with a personal and family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, and 52 individuals with a personal history of breast cancer diagnosed below age 50 without additional family history. We have identified 11 mutations (nine BRCA1 and two BRCA2) using combined techniques involving protein truncation test, direct sequencing and heteroduplex analysis. We found eight out of 53 patients (15.1%) with a family history to carry BRCA gene mutations (seven BRCA1 and one BRCA2). Of these, four were found in 43 families presenting only breast cancer histories, and four were found in families presenting ovarian cancer with or without breast cancer. We also demonstrated two BRCA1 and one BRCA2 mutations in three out of 52 (5.8%) early-onset breast cancer cases without additional family history. Three of nine BRCA1 and both BRCA2 mutations detected in this study were not reported previously. These mutations may be specific to the Turkish population. The BRCA1 5382insC mutation, specific to Ashkenazi and Russian populations, was found twice in our study group, representing a possible founder mutation in the Turkish population. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
