Get PDF
Internet connectivity in tertiary institutions in Africa has been summarized in three characteristics - too little, too expensive and poorly managed (African Tertiary Institutions Connectivity Survey (ATICS), 2006 report). The Internet portal system offers educational organizations the ability to track students’ needs and promote their programs and plans. This paper examines the effect of portal systems in promoting the corporate images of Universities, whereby Six Universities in Nigeria were used as an example. Survey was adopted as the method and six hundred respondents were randomly selected for this study. Three hypotheses were tested and analyzed using t-test and correlation analysis. The paper recommended that was a dire need for universities to engage the services of expert web-designers with regard to effective projection of their corporate image through graphics, colour letterin

Evaluation and analysis of noise pollution levels have been carried out to determine the level of noise and its sources in Ilorin metropolis. Noise measurements have been done in the morning, at noon, in the evening, and at night to determine noise pollution all over the city. The selected areas of study are commercial centers, road junctions/busy roads, passenger loading parks, and high-density and low-density residential areas. The road junctions had the highest noise pollution levels, followed by commercial centers. The results of this study show that the noise levels in Ilorin metropolis exceeded allowed values at 30 of 42 measurements points. There is a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the noise pollution levels and traffic noise index in all the locations. From the measured noise values, a map of noise pollution was developed for Ilorin. Many solutions proposed for noise abatement in the city are set out

Get PDF
This study examined the coverage of agriculture between January and December (2007) in the Nigerian press. The method adopted was content analysis and 288 issues of 3 selected newspapers were analyzed; Guardian, Tribune and Punch. 5 research questions were raised and adequately substantiated on newspapers coverage of agricultural programs and development in Nigeria. The findings of the study however, revealed that the Nigerian press did not give sufficient coverage to issues on agriculture in comparison to other sectors of the Nigerian economy. Furthermore, the paper observed that issues on agriculture did not receive favourable coverage by the newspapers. The paper therefore suggests that the press should endeavour to give adequate attention to various issues on agriculture as well as its developmental programs in its reportage so as to facilitate sustainable development in agricultur

The ever increasing brand multiplicity and competition on the market of goods and services have dictated the pace of growth in the usage of celebrity endorsement across the globe. The use of celebrity endorsement has become a prime brand communication strategy in organizational management that aids the sale and promotion of brands across the globe. It is a popular approach in marketing communication for all brand management. This paper examines celebrity endorsement as a brand communication tool that serves as an aid to expedite brand image and purchase. However, it can also become horrific unless accompanied by a powerful idea, effective and impeccable positioning

Thermodynamic Analysis of a Gas Turbine Power Plant Modelled with an Evaporative Cooler

Get PDF
Performance of a gas turbine is mainly depends on the inlet air temperature. The power output of a gas turbine depends on the flow of mass through it. Inlet air cooling increases the power output by taking advantage of the gas turbine’s feature of higher mass flow rate when the compressor inlet temperature decreases. This is precisely the reason why on hot days, when air is less dense, power output falls off. A rise of 1°C temperature of inlet air decreases the power output by 1%. In this paper the performance enhancement of gas turbine power plants by cooling the compressor intake air with an evaporative cooler is studied. This study investigated the effect of inlet air cooling system on the performance of an existing gas turbine power plant in Nigeria. The results show that for each 5oC decrease of inlet air temperature, net output power increases around 5-10% and the first and second law efficiencies increase around 2-5%. It is shown that the amount of this increase is higher when the pressure ratio is high and turbine inlet temperature is low. The results of this study shows that retrofitting of the existing gas turbine plant with inlet air cooling system gives a better system performance and may prove to be an attractive investment opportunity to the Nigeria government and stakeholders of the plant

Performance Evaluation of Two Palm Kernel Nut Cracker Machines

Get PDF
In this study performance evaluation of centrifugal impact approach and vertical palm kernel nut cracker machine was carried out. The results of the study show that the vertical centrifugal palm kernel cracker is more efficient than the centrifugal impact approach palm kernel cracker. The efficiency of Vertical centrifugal palm kernel cracker is 71.3% and that of centrifugal impact approach is 50.38%. Apart from this, the vertical centrifugal machine though has low speed but it produces clean and neat nut cracked output

Design and Development of Vapor Absorption Refrigeration System for Rural Dwellers

Get PDF
In this study, the experimental analysis of the performance of vapor absorption system was developed and developed. The influence of generator, evaporator and condenser’s temperatures on the system performance was studied using gas burner as source of energy, ammonia-water combination as working fluid and energy equations as governing equations for the work. There was variation in the results when compared with the earlier worker who used kerosene burner as source of energy and ammonia-water combination. Result of this study shows that if higher cooling capacity and also lower evaporator`s temperature are desired from the system, generator`s temperature should be increased considerably. Also the combination of an analyzer, rectifier and heat exchanger would produce better COP of the Syste

Efficient energy utilization as a tool for sustainable development in Nigeria

Get PDF
This study takes a look at the national energy outlook of Nigeria. Energy utilization pattern of the country was investigated, and possible areas of energy conservation in the major economic sectors (industry, transportation, office and residential buildings) were considered. The study reveals that there is inefficient utilization of energy in the major economic sectors of the country. This study presented several energy conservation opportunities to cause energy savings and identified about six major areas through which energy conservation measures can effectively cause some savings in energy and allow for its stability. Such areas of focus for application of energy conservation measures include manufacturing/industrial setup, office and residential buildings, power generation and distribution, transportation, energy conservation through waste control etc. Various measures that need to be considered and appropriately addressed in moving towards energy sustainability in Nigeria have been recommended among which are energy use in ventilating equipment, lighting, electrically operated industrial machines and engines, design for energy-efficient buildings etc

Evaluating Performances of Traffic Noise Models

Get PDF
Traffic noise in decibel dB(A) were measured at six locations using 407780A Integrating Sound Level Meter, while spot speed and traffic volume were collected with cine-camera. The predicted sound exposure level (SEL) was evaluated using Burgess, British and FWHA model. The average noise level obtained are 77.64 dB(A), 72.95 dB(A)and 75 dB(A) respectively; B The values from Burgess and FWHA model lies within an error band of B1 5% with reference to the observed noise levels. Thus, the three models are effective in predicting equivalent traffic noise index in Akure with fair accuracy. The coefficient of correlation (R2) between observed sound exposure level and predicted sound exposure level are 0.931 and 0.968 respectively; thus, there is a good correlation between the observed and the predicted value.B Adequate road design and management of traffic flow are recommended to reduce road traffic noise in the study area.http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v33i4.

CORRELATES OF POVERTY STATUS AMONG RURAL HOUSEHOLDS IN OGUN STATE, NIGERIA: AN ASSET INDEX APPROACH

Get PDF
Examination of the characteristics and causes of poverty is an important input into the design of economic policy and poverty alleviation programmes. This study assessed the poverty status of rural households in Ogun State, using the Asset Index Approach due to shortcomings of the conventional methods in poverty analysis. Relevant data were collected from a total of 260 households using a four-stage sampling procedure. The data were analyzed using principal component and ordered probit regression analyses (OPRA). The results showed that the OPRA, which significantly (χ2 = 135.20, p < 0.01) explained the probability of a household escaping poverty, revealed that the primary occupation of household heads and the educational status of household heads and their wives among others factors significantly affect the likelihood of escaping poverty. The study therefore suggested that the economic situation of rural households can be considerably enhanced by promoting member’s access to qualitative education and also by encouraging household heads who take up farming activities as their primary occupation to participate in credit associations, indigenous savings and micro financing so as to boost their farming. Therefore, rural development policies should be tailored towards developing these facilities
