A Millimeter-Wave Achromatic Half Wave Plate
We have constructed an achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) suitable for the
millimeter wavelength band. The AHWP was made from a stack of three sapphire
a-cut birefringent plates with the optical axes of the middle plate rotated by
50.5 degrees with respect to the aligned axes of the other plates. The measured
modulation efficiency of the AHWP at 110 GHz was %. In contrast,
the modulation efficiency of a single sapphire plate of the same thickness was
%. Both results are in close agreement with theoretical predictions.
The modulation efficiency of the AHWP was constant as a function of incidence
angles between 0 and 15 degrees. We discuss design parameters of an AHWP in the
context of astrophysical broad band polarimetry at the millimeter wavelength
band.Comment: In print - Applied Optics, 14 pages, 7 figure
Feynman graph polynomials
The integrand of any multi-loop integral is characterised after Feynman
parametrisation by two polynomials. In this review we summarise the properties
of these polynomials. Topics covered in this article include among others:
Spanning trees and spanning forests, the all-minors matrix-tree theorem,
recursion relations due to contraction and deletion of edges, Dodgson's
identity and matroids.Comment: 35 pages, references adde
Development of a Grazing Land Management Education Program for Northern Australiaâs Grasslands and Grassy Woodlands
Recognition of the potential to enhance grazing land management to meet the goal of sustainable beef production has been increasing over the past decade. Recognition of the relationship between poor land management and negative off-site environmental impacts, such as soil erosion and a decline in the condition of rivers and adjacent near shore coastal areas from sediment transport, has increased also. This concern has matured somewhat to include the critical link between land condition and production, and the threat to sustainable carrying capacity that comes from declining land condition. Concurrently, interest has increased in optimising the use of pasture, e.g. through the development of infrastructure (watering points, fencing), through more pro-active management e.g. alternative grazing systems, spelling of pastures, and through pasture development. In fact, it can be argued that achieving production goals while improving and maintaining the health of the land has become the major on-property issue for northern Australian graziers
Relative generalized hamming weights and extended weight polynomials of almost affine codes
This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science, International Castle Meeting on Coding Theory and Applications ICMCTA 2017: Coding Theory and Applications, 207-216. The final authenticated version is available online at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-66278-7_17 .This paper is devoted to giving a generalization from linear
codes to the larger class of almost affine codes of two different results.
One such result is how one can express the relative generalized Hamming
weights of a pair of codes in terms of intersection properties between the
smallest of these codes and subcodes of the largest code. The other result
tells how one can find the extended weight polynomials, expressing the
number of codewords of each possible weight, for each code in an infinite
hierarchy of extensions of a code over a given alphabet. Our tools will
be demi-matroids and matroids
The EBEX Experiment
EBEX is a balloon-borne polarimeter designed to measure the intensity and
polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The measurements
would probe the inflationary epoch that took place shortly after the big bang
and would significantly improve constraints on the values of several
cosmological parameters. EBEX is unique in its broad frequency coverage and in
its ability to provide critical information about the level of polarized
Galactic foregrounds which will be necessary for all future CMB polarization
experiments. EBEX consists of a 1.5 m Dragone-type telescope that provides a
resolution of less than 8 arcminutes over four focal planes each of 4 degree
diffraction limited field of view at frequencies up to 450 GHz. The experiment
is designed to accommodate 330 transition edge bolometric detectors per focal
plane, for a total of up to 1320 detectors. EBEX will operate with frequency
bands centered at 150, 250, 350, and 450 GHz. Polarimetry is achieved with a
rotating achromatic half-wave plate. EBEX is currently in the design and
construction phase, and first light is scheduled for 2008.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Figure 1 is changed from the one which appeared

Hamming weights and Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to matroids
To each linear code over a finite field we associate the matroid of its
parity check matrix. We show to what extent one can determine the generalized
Hamming weights of the code (or defined for a matroid in general) from various
sets of Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes
associated to the matroid
Molecular dynamics simulations of oxide memory resistors (memristors)
Reversible bipolar nano-switches that can be set and read electronically in a
solid-state two-terminal device are very promising for applications. We have
performed molecular-dynamics simulations that mimic systems with oxygen
vacancies interacting via realistic potentials and driven by an external bias
voltage. The competing short- and long-range interactions among charged mobile
vacancies lead to density fluctuations and short-range ordering, while
illustrating some aspects of observed experimental behavior, such as memristor
polarity inversion.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Superfield Description of a Self-Dual Supergravity a la MacDowell-Mansouri
Using MacDowell-Mansouri theory, in this work, we investigate a superfield
description of the self-dual supergravity a la Ashtekar. We find that in order
to reproduce previous results on supersymmetric Ashtekar formalism, it is
necessary to properly combine the supersymmetric field-strength in the
Lagrangian. We extend our procedure to the case of supersymmetric Ashtekar
formalism in eight dimensions.Comment: 19 pages, Latex; section 6 improve
Self-avoiding walks crossing a square
We study a restricted class of self-avoiding walks (SAW) which start at the
origin (0, 0), end at , and are entirely contained in the square on the square lattice . The number of distinct
walks is known to grow as . We estimate as well as obtaining strict upper and lower bounds,
We give exact results for the number of SAW of
length for and asymptotic results for .
We also consider the model in which a weight or {\em fugacity} is
associated with each step of the walk. This gives rise to a canonical model of
a phase transition. For the average length of a SAW grows as ,
while for it grows as
. Here is the growth constant of unconstrained SAW in . For we provide numerical evidence, but no proof, that the
average walk length grows as .
We also consider Hamiltonian walks under the same restriction. They are known
to grow as on the same lattice. We give
precise estimates for as well as upper and lower bounds, and prove that

Oriented Matroids -- Combinatorial Structures Underlying Loop Quantum Gravity
We analyze combinatorial structures which play a central role in determining
spectral properties of the volume operator in loop quantum gravity (LQG). These
structures encode geometrical information of the embedding of arbitrary valence
vertices of a graph in 3-dimensional Riemannian space, and can be represented
by sign strings containing relative orientations of embedded edges. We
demonstrate that these signature factors are a special representation of the
general mathematical concept of an oriented matroid. Moreover, we show that
oriented matroids can also be used to describe the topology (connectedness) of
directed graphs. Hence the mathematical methods developed for oriented matroids
can be applied to the difficult combinatorics of embedded graphs underlying the
construction of LQG. As a first application we revisit the analysis of [4-5],
and find that enumeration of all possible sign configurations used there is
equivalent to enumerating all realizable oriented matroids of rank 3, and thus
can be greatly simplified. We find that for 7-valent vertices having no
coplanar triples of edge tangents, the smallest non-zero eigenvalue of the
volume spectrum does not grow as one increases the maximum spin \jmax at the
vertex, for any orientation of the edge tangents. This indicates that, in
contrast to the area operator, considering large \jmax does not necessarily
imply large volume eigenvalues. In addition we give an outlook to possible
starting points for rewriting the combinatorics of LQG in terms of oriented
matroids.Comment: 43 pages, 26 figures, LaTeX. Version published in CQG. Typos
