    Reference Services in Liberal Arts Libraries

    This study addresses a gap in the literature regarding reference services at liberal arts institutions. The author conducted a literature review to examine the existing body of research on reference services and distributed a survey to the 80 member libraries of the Oberlin Group in February 2015. The study found that a wide range of reference practices are in place at liberal arts libraries and focused especially on the use of a designated reference desk, which is widespread. However, there is a correlation between higher librarian satisfaction with reference services and the absence of a desk. Comments from respondents are included in the discussion and reflected common themes associated with decisions around reference services. Some limitations of the study include its small sample size and conflicting responses from librarians at the same institution. Nevertheless, this article provides a starting point for further research into liberal arts reference. It could provide other libraries with a tool for reevaluating their own reference models, and the factors relating to librarian satisfaction, the themes running through the comments, or the trends discussed in the literature review may be relevant for determining the most effective reference model at any institution

    Evolution of crystalline orientations in the production of ferritic stainless steel

    Ferritic stainless steel EN 1.4016 is used in a wide range of applications, the most common ones related to sheet forming. Several problems in the post-processing of these steels relates to their texture and anisotropy. Therefore, it is necessary to know the mechanisms of texture formation in the subsequent stages of metal manufacturing processes. EBSD has been demonstrated as a successful characterisation technique for this purpose. It is known that during re-crystallisation of Fe-Cr steels, deviations from the desired.-fibre texture promote a decrease of deep drawability. Additionally, a-fibre damages formability. Subsequent cold rolling and annealing can enhance the deep drawing properties of the steel sheet. In this research, a standard sample and a modified one with optimised settings as regard to chemical composition and manufacturing process, to improve the formability properties, are characterised.     Growing and Handling of Bacterial Cultures within a Shared Core Facility for Integrated Structural Biology Program

    We have established and optimized standard operating procedures for growing and handling bacterial cultures in a shared core laboratory to support Integrative Structural Biology. The Integrative Structural Biology effort within the Biomolecular Research Center allows researchers to generate new knowledge about protein and RNA structure and function. We aim to understand how biomolecules assemble into stable structures and how structural dynamics impacts their function. Here we describe specific procedures for growing and handling bacterial cultures for overexpression and isolation of recombinant proteins, 15N/13C uniform labeling of recombinant proteins, protein isolation and purification, and analysis of protein solubility that are ideal for implementation in a shared research core laboratory that serves a multitude of diverse customers and research laboratories

    Fusion of colour contrasted images for early detection of oesophageal squamous cell dysplasia from endoscopic videos in real time

    Standard white light (WL) endoscopy often misses precancerous oesophageal changes due to their only subtle differences to the surrounding normal mucosa. While deep learning (DL) based decision support systems benefit to a large extent, they face two challenges, which are limited annotated data sets and insufficient generalisation. This paper aims to fuse a DL system with human perception by exploiting computational enhancement of colour contrast. Instead of employing conventional data augmentation techniques by alternating RGB values of an image, this study employs a human colour appearance model, CIECAM, to enhance the colours of an image. When testing on a frame of endoscopic videos, the developed system firstly generates its contrast-enhanced image, then processes both original and enhanced images one after another to create initial segmentation masks. Finally, fusion takes place on the assembled list of masks obtained from both images to determine the finishing bounding boxes, segments and class labels that are rendered on the original video frame, through the application of non-maxima suppression technique (NMS). This deep learning system is built upon real-time instance segmentation network Yolact. In comparison with the same system without fusion, the sensitivity and specificity for detecting early stage of oesophagus cancer, i.e. low-grade dysplasia (LGD) increased from 75% and 88% to 83% and 97%, respectively. The video processing/play back speed is 33.46 frames per second. The main contribution includes alleviation of data source dependency of existing deep learning systems and the fusion of human perception for data augmentation

    Recovery of Stem Cell Proliferation by Low Intensity Vibration Under Simulated Microgravity Requires LINC Complex

    Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) rely on their ability to integrate physical and spatial signals at load bearing sites to replace and renew musculoskeletal tissues. Designed to mimic unloading experienced during spaceflight, preclinical unloading and simulated microgravity models show that alteration of gravitational loading limits proliferative activity of stem cells. Emerging evidence indicates that this loss of proliferation may be linked to loss of cellular cytoskeleton and contractility. Low intensity vibration (LIV) is an exercise mimetic that promotes proliferation and differentiation of MSCs by enhancing cell structure. Here, we asked whether application of LIV could restore the reduced proliferative capacity seen in MSCs that are subjected to simulated microgravity. We found that simulated microgravity (sMG) decreased cell proliferation and simultaneously compromised cell structure. These changes included increased nuclear height, disorganized apical F-actin structure, reduced expression, and protein levels of nuclear lamina elements LaminA/C LaminB1 as well as linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton (LINC) complex elements Sun-2 and Nesprin-2. Application of LIV restored cell proliferation and nuclear proteins LaminA/C and Sun-2. An intact LINC function was required for LIV effect; disabling LINC functionality via co-depletion of Sun-1, and Sun-2 prevented rescue of cell proliferation by LIV. Our findings show that sMG alters nuclear structure and leads to decreased cell proliferation, but does not diminish LINC complex mediated mechanosensitivity, suggesting LIV as a potential candidate to combat sMG-induced proliferation loss

    Designing and Piloting a Tool for the Measurement of the Use of Pronunciation Learning Strategies

    What appears to be indispensable to drive the field forward and ensure that research findings will be comparable across studies and provide a sound basis for feasible pedagogic proposals is to draw up a classification of PLS and design on that basis a valid and reliable data collection tool which could be employed to measure the use of these strategies in different groups of learners, correlate it with individual and contextual variables, and appraise the effects of training programs. In accordance with this rationale, the present paper represents an attempt to propose a tentative categorization of pronunciation learning strategies, adopting as a point of reference the existing taxonomies of strategic devices (i.e. O'Malley and Chamot 1990; Oxford 1990) and the instructional options teachers have at their disposal when dealing with elements of this language subsystem (e.g. Kelly 2000; Goodwin 2001). It also introduces a research instrument designed on the basis of the classification that shares a number of characteristics with Oxford's (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning but, in contrast to it, includes both Likert-scale and open-ended items. The findings of a pilot study which involved 80 English Department students demonstrate that although the tool requires considerable refinement, it provides a useful point of departure for future research into PLS

    Participatory research in sport-for-development: Complexities, experiences and (missed) opportunities

    © 2017 The Author(s) In this paper, the authors examine how participatory research can be conceptualized and fostered in sport-for-development (SfD). The authors offer a conceptualization of participatory research that centers on the interplay between three dimensions: participation, power, and reflexivity. Drawing on variegated experiences with SfD research across different geographical locations, the authors scrutinize the conceptual and empirical linkages between these dimensions, and how these linkages are influenced by structures of authority. Findings suggest that most SfD research falls short with regard to the critical challenge of embracing and delivering high degrees of participation, power shifting, and reflexivity. More specifically, SfD researchers typically fail to relinquish power and control over the research process. The SfD research community would likely benefit from greater inclusivity and collaboration when designing creative ways to improve this state of affairs. The authors conclude by reflecting on the implications and by suggesting ways to promote participatory and activist research in SfD contexts
