Light Neutralino Dark Matter in the NMSSM

Neutralino dark matter is generally assumed to be relatively heavy, with a mass near the electroweak scale. This does not necessarily need to be the case, however. In the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) and other supersymmetric models with an extended Higgs sector, a very light CP-odd Higgs boson can naturally arise making it possible for a very light neutralino to annihilate efficiently enough to avoid being overproduced in the early Universe. In this article, we explore the characteristics of a supersymmetric model needed to include a very light neutralino, 100 MeV < \mcnone < 20 GeV, using the NMSSM as a prototype. We discuss the most important constraints from Upsilon decays, bsγb \to s \gamma, Bsμ+μB_s \to \mu^+ \mu^- and the magnetic moment of the muon, and find that a light bino or singlino neutralino is allowed, and can be generated with the appropriate relic density. It has previously been shown that the positive detection of dark matter claimed by the DAMA collaboration can be reconciled with other direct dark matter experiments such as CDMS II if the dark matter particle is rather light, between about 6 and 9 GeV. A singlino or bino-like neutralino could easily fall within this range of masses within the NMSSM. Additionally, models with sub-GeV neutralinos may be capable of generating the 511 keV gamma-ray emission observed from the galactic bulge by the INTEGRAL/SPI experiment. We also point out measurements which can be performed immediately at CLEO, BaBar and Belle using existing data to discover or significantly constrain this scenario.Comment: References updated, accepted for publication in PR

The Determinants of Reported Personal and Household Hygiene Behaviour: A Multi-Country Study.

A substantial proportion of the total infectious disease burden world-wide is due to person-to-person spread of pathogens within households. A questionnaire-based survey on the determinants of hand-washing with soap and cleaning of household surfaces was conducted in at least 1000 households in each of twelve countries across the world (N = 12,239). A structural equation model of hygiene behaviour and its consequences derived from theory was then estimated on this dataset for both behaviours, using a maximum likelihood procedure. The analysis showed that the frequency of handwashing with soap is significantly related to how automatically it is performed, and whether or not someone is busy, or tired. Surface cleaning was strongly linked to possessing a cleaning routine, the perception that one is living in a dirty environment and that others are doing the behaviour, whether one has a strong sense of contamination, as well as a felt need to keep one's surroundings tidy. Being concerned with good manners is also linked to the performance of both behaviours. This study is the first to identify the role of manners, orderliness and routine on hygiene behaviours globally. Such findings should prove helpful in designing programs to improve domestic hygiene practices

Report of the Committee Appointed to Procure a Survey for the Route of the Contemplated Cumberland & Oxford Canal to which is added the Report of the Engineer, Containing an Estimate of the Expence of Making the Canal

The Committee chosen for the purpose of procuring a Survey to be made, of the Route of the contemplated Cumberland and Oxford Canal, and of causing an estimate of the probable amount necessary for carrying the design into full effect, have performed the services assigned them, and now present the annexed Report and Estimate of the Engineer, which will in part, exhibit the result of their labours. The Estimate of actual expense is 130,804,89;towhichisadded5pr.cent,or130,804,89 ; to which is added 5 pr. cent, or 6,540,24, lest in any event that sum should prove insufficient for the completion of the work. Although this sum falls far short of what was anticipated by many, still if the nature of the land through which the route is pursued, the facility with which the excavations can generally be made, and the kind and cheapness of the materials required doubt can possibly exist that the sum is amply sufficient. That there are some individuals in the community who may be led to doubt its truth, is obvious ; but the Committee do not deem it their duty to spend time or paper in argument to convince the sceptical [sic], for a slight knowledge of facts will show the feasibility of execution within the limits of the sum assigned. --from the report, p. 3-4.https://digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu/mainebicentennial/1083/thumbnail.jp
