    Cluster observations of the midaltitude cusp under strong northward interplanetary magnetic field

    We report on a multispacecraft cusp observation lasting more than 100 min. We determine the cusp boundary motion and reveal the effect on the cusp size of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) changing from southward to northward. The cusp shrinks at the beginning of the IMF rotation and it reexpands at the rate of 0.40° invariant latitude per hour under stable northward IMF. On the basis of plasma signatures inside the cusp, such as counterstreaming electrons with balanced fluxes, we propose that pulsed dual lobe reconnection operates during the time of interest. SC1 and SC4 observations suggest a long-term regular periodicity of the pulsed dual reconnection, which we estimate to be ~1–5 min. Further, the distances from the spacecraft to the reconnection site are estimated on the basis of observations from three satellites. The distance determined using SC1 and SC4 observations is ~15 RE and that determined from SC3 data is ~8 RE. The large-scale speed of the reconnection site sunward motion is ~16 km s-1. We observe also a fast motion of the reconnection site by SC1, which provides new information about the transitional phase after the IMF rotation. Finally, a statistical study of the dependency of plasma convection inside the cusp on the IMF clock angle is performed. The relationship between the cusp stagnation, the dual lobe reconnection process, and the IMF clock angle is discussed

    Positive Selection by Purified MHC Class II / Thymic Epithelial Cells In Vitro: Costimulatory Signals Mediated by B7 Are Not Involved

    We have investigated the possibility that the costimulatory signals required for activation of mature T cells also play a role in providing differentiation signals for positive selection during T-cell development. We show that purified MHC Class II+ thymic epithelial cells are able to support positive selection in vitro but lack both the functional capacity to deliver costimulatory signals and expression of the costimulatory ligand B7. Our results suggest that the additional signals provided by costimulatory ligands are not required for TCR-mediated positive selection, although other ancillary signals provided by thymic epithelial cells may be involved

    Constraints on UV Absorption in the Intracluster Medium of Abell 1030

    We present results from an extensive HST spectroscopic search for UV absorption lines in the spectrum of the quasar B2~1028+313, which is associated with the central dominant galaxy in the cluster Abell~1030 (z=0.178z=0.178). This is one of the brightest known UV continuum sources located in a cluster, and therefore provides an ideal opportunity to obtain stringent constraints on the column densities of any cool absorbing gas that may be associated with the intracluster medium (ICM). Our HST spectra were obtained with the FOS and GHRS, and provide continuous coverage at rest-frame wavelengths from ∼975\sim 975 to 4060~\AA, thereby allowing the investigation of many different elements and ionization levels. We utilize a new technique that involves simultaneous fitting of large numbers of different transitions for each species, thereby yielding more robust constraints on column densities than can be obtained from a single transition. This method yields upper limits of ≲1011−1013\lesssim 10^{11} - 10^{13} cm−2^{-2} on the column densities of a wide range of molecular, atomic and ionized species that may be associated with the ICM. We also discuss a possible \Lya and C IV absorption system associated with the quasar. We discuss the implications of the upper limits on cool intracluster gas in the context of the physical properties of the ICM and its relationship to the quasar.Comment: Astrophysical Journal, in press, 19 pages, includes 5 PostScript figures.     R-modes in Neutron Stars with Crusts: Turbulent Saturation, Spin-down, and Crust Melting

    Rossby waves (r-modes) have been suggested as a means to regulate the spin periods of young or accreting neutron stars, and also to produce observable gravitational wave radiation. R-modes involve primarily transverse, incompressive motions of the star's fluid core. However, neutron stars gain crusts early in their lives: therefore, r-modes also imply shear in the fluid beneath the crust. We examine the criterion for this shear layer to become turbulent, and derive the rate of dissipation in the turbulent regime. Unlike dissipation from a viscous boundary layer, turbulent energy loss is nonlinear in mode energy and can therefore cause the mode to saturate at amplitudes typically much less than unity. This energy loss also reappears as heat below the crust. We study the possibility of crust melting as well as its implications for the spin evolution of low-mass X-ray binaries.     Quantifying Biochemical alterations in Brown and subcutaneous White adipose Tissues of Mice Using Fourier Transform infrared Widefield imaging

    Stimulating increased thermogenic activity in adipose tissue is an important biological target for obesity treatment, and label-free imaging techniques with the potential to quantify stimulation-associated biochemical changes to the adipose tissue are highly sought after. In this study, we used spatially resolved Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging to quantify biochemical changes caused by cold exposure in the brown and subcutaneous white adipose tissues (BAT and s-WAT) of 6 week-old C57BL6 mice exposed to 30°C (N = 5), 24°C (N = 5), and 10°C (N = 5) conditions for 10 days. Fat exposed to colder temperatures demonstrated greater thermogenic activity as indicated by increased messenger RNA expression levels of a panel of thermogenic marker genes including uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) and Dio2. Protein to lipid ratio, calculated from the ratio of the integrated area from 1,600 to 1,700 cm−1 (amide I) to the integrated area from 2,830 to 2,980 cm−1 (saturated lipids), was elevated in 10°C BAT and s-WAT compared to 24°C (p = 0.004 and p \u3c 0.0001) and 30°C (p = 0.0033 and p \u3c 0.0001). Greater protein to lipid ratio was associated with greater UCP-1 expression level in the BAT (p = 0.021) and s-WAT (p = 0.032) and greater Dio2 expression in s-WAT (p = 0.033). The degree of unsaturation, calculated from the ratio of the integrated area from 2,992 to 3,020 cm−1 (unsaturated lipids) to the integrated area from 2,830 to 2,980 cm−1 (saturated lipids), showed stepwise decreases going from colder-exposed to warmer-exposed BAT. Complementary 1H NMR measurements confirmed the findings from this ratio in BAT. Principal component analysis applied to FTIR spectra revealed pronounced differences in overall spectral characteristics between 30, 24, and 10°C BAT and s-WAT. Spatially resolved FTIR imaging is a promising technique to quantify cold-induced biochemical changes in BAT and s-WAT in a label-free manner

    The periodic standing-wave method for binary inspiral computes the exact numerical solution for periodic binary motion with standing gravitational waves, and uses it as an approximation to slow binary inspiral with outgoing waves. Important features of this method presented here are: (i) the mathematical nature of the ``mixed'' partial differential equations to be solved, (ii) the meaning of standing waves in the method, (iii) computational difficulties, and (iv) the ``effective linearity'' that ultimately justifies the approximation. The method is applied to three dimensional nonlinear scalar model problems, and the numerical results are used to demonstrate extraction of the outgoing solution from the standing-wave solution, and the role of effective linearity.Comment: 13 pages RevTeX, 5 figures.     The Benefits of High-Intensity Interval Training on Cognition and Blood Pressure in Older Adults With Hypertension and Subjective Cognitive Decline: Results From the Heart & Mind Study

    Background: The impact of exercise on cognition in older adults with hypertension and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is unclear. Objectives: We determined the influence of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) combined with mind-motor training on cognition and systolic blood pressure (BP) in older adults with hypertension and SCD. Methods: We randomized 128 community-dwelling older adults [age mean (SD): 71.1 (6.7), 47.7% females] with history of hypertension and SCD to either HIIT or a moderate-intensity continuous training (MCT) group. Both groups received 15 min of mind-motor training followed by 45 min of either HIIT or MCT. Participants exercised in total 60 min/day, 3 days/week for 6 months. We assessed changes in global cognitive functioning (GCF), Trail-Making Test (TMT), systolic and diastolic BP, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Results: Participants in both groups improved diastolic BP [F(1, 87.32) = 4.392, p = 0.039], with greatest effect within the HIIT group [estimated mean change (95% CI): −2.64 mmHg, (−4.79 to −0.48), p = 0.017], but no between-group differences were noted (p = 0.17). Both groups also improved cardiorespiratory fitness [F(1, 69) = 34.795, p \u3c 0.001], and TMT A [F(1, 81.51) = 26.871, p \u3c 0.001] and B [F(1, 79.49) = 23.107, p \u3c 0.001]. There were, however, no within- or between-group differences in GCF and systolic BP at follow-up. Conclusion: Despite improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness, exercise of high- or moderate-intensity, combined with mind-motor training, did not improve GCF or systolic BP in individuals with hypertension and SCD.
