Women in Governance and Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria,1999-2012
Democracy is a system of government that
abhors gender segregation in politics. Also, it has been
observed that contribution to development in any society is
not gender discriminatory. Utilizing secondary data, the
paper shows that although female of ages 20 and above
constitute 50.10 percent of the nationâs population; their
appointment into positions of authority is infinitesimal
compared to their male counterpart of the same age. It
reveals further that the dominance of male in the nationâs
politics, and the low involvement of women in the election
participation and their appointment into positions of
authority have created the politics of ânear-exclusionâ of
women in favour of their male counterpart in the past. It
therefore recommends among others the integration of
women into the political process in terms of their actual
involvement in public policy formulation and
implementation as basis for sustainable democracy and
development in Nigeri
Leadership and Accountability:The Challenges of Development in Nigeria
A sizable number of scholars have argued that development in any nation is a function
of a leadership that subscribes to the principles of accountability in government at
various levels. This paper employs the methodology of historical research, which
involves the analysis of secondary data obtained from relevant books, journals,
internet resources, magazines and newspapers, to examine leadership and
accountability as they relate to the challenges of development in Nigeria, with
particular reference to the management of public resources. It observes that these
challenges are premised among others on poor leadership at various levels of
government. The paper concludes that for the living standards of Nigerians to be
enhanced, there is need to enforce strict compliance of public officials with rules
governing the management of public resources, thereby curbing corruption

Insurgency and National Security Challenges in Nigeria: Looking Back, Looking Ahead
The 1648 Treaty of Westphalia designed a state system on the twin-principle of territoriality and sovereignty. Sovereignty accords the state unquestionable but legitimate control over the nation and polity, and gives it the latitude to preserve and protect its territorial domain from both internal and external threats. However, aside the fact that globalisation and the internationalisation of the globe have reduced the primacy of these dual principles, there have also been the problem of ideological and terrorist networks that have taken advantage of the instruments of globalization to emerge and threaten state sovereignty and its preservation. The security and sovereignty of the Nigerian State have been under threat as a result of the emergence and activities of insurgent groups, such as Boko Haram in the Northeast and other militant groups in other parts of the country. Using a descriptive-analytical approach, this paper examines the security challenges Nigeria faces from insurgency and the impact of this on national peace, security and sovereignty. The study shows that the frequency of insurgent attacks has resulted in collateral damage on the peace, stability, development and sovereignty of the state. It finds also that the federal government has not been decisive enough. These place urgent and decisive demand on the government to adopt new management strategy that will address and contain the insurgent and terrorist groups. It is recommended that government at all levels should awake to its responsibilities, ensure adequate funding and training of the security agencies, as well as fortification of the armed forces with sophisticated weapons that will effectively outmatch the firepower of the terroristsâ; and tightening of the borders to checking of the influx of people into its territor

Learning Environment and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in External Examinations: A Study of Selected Schools in Ota
A recent trend in Nigeria is the issue of poor academic performance of students of secondary schools
in external examinations such as the National Examination Council and the West African
Examinations Council. Major concern has centered on the quality of teachers and non-commitment of
the students to their studies due to distractions that hamper learning but very little attention has been
given to the learning environment. But the environment in which the students learn such as
classrooms, libraries, technical workshops, laboratories, play grounds, conveniences, sanitation,
maintenance culture, aesthetics among others are variables that affect studentsâ learning and
academic performance. Hence, the learning environment remains an important area that should be
studied and well managed to enhance studentsâ academic performance. This paper therefore
examines the impact of learning environment on studentsâ performance in external examination in
secondary schools in Ota a major industrial town in Nigeria. Factors such as school facilities, class
size, school location and school plant planning, aesthetics, maintenance culture, sanitation,
conveniences would be examined to know their impact on learning and performance of secondary
school students. A multiple data collection method including use of documented materials, distribution
of questionnaire and interviews would be undertaken to test the hypotheses developed. Simple
percentage statistical tool would be employed to analyze the variables

Education and Gendered Roles in Post-Adjustment Igbo Society
The impact of Igbo lost the 1967-70 making Biafra-Nigeria war was of collective punishment of the
Igbo through the policy of marginalization and exclusion. This strategy of disempowerment imposed a
heavy price on the Igbo attitude to education. The frustrations of the educated Igbo males to find
accommodation in the formal sector of Nigerian economy pushed them into the informal sector for
survival and social mobility. For Igbo men, investment in education was seen as a waste leaving it for
female folks. But post-adjustment neo-liberalization of the Nigerian economy and the consequent
retreat of the state altered the dynamics that created a level playing field for job competition, thus
creating room for the empowerment of Igbo women by the virtue of their educational attainment. The
paper examines these changing dynamics of gender roles of Igbo society arising from these changes
in the structure of Nigerian economy. It employed a multiple method of data collection including
documented materials and surveys which was analyzed using descriptive analysis to arrive at the
finding that changes in gendered access to education among the Igbo society has altered the
traditional Igbo gendered rol
