    Development and Evaluation of an Inquiry-Based Elementary Science Teacher Education Program Reflecting Current Reform Movements

    The National Science Education Standards (National Research Council 1996, National science education standards . Washington, DC: National Academy Press) and various other national and state documents call for teachers who possess science content knowledge, employ an inquiry approach in teaching, and engage in reflective practices. This paper describes a rationale for choosing particular recommendations to implement and how we incorporated those as we revised our elementary science education program.     Action research (AR) in an educational setting as described by Tillotson (2000) is an approach to “classroom-based problems” or “specific school issues” (p. 31). His process involves identification of the issue or problem, development and implementation of an action plan, gathering and interpreting data, sharing the results within the community, and “action planning” as a cyclical endeavor (Tillotson, 2000, p. 32). AR is utilized as a key component of developing pre-service teachers in the University of Michigan-Dearborn certification program. Illustrating the five components of Tillotson’s approach, pre-service elementary teachers develop and analyze pre-assessments of K-8 student knowledge about a specific science topic to identify prior student understanding; they create and teach two lessons to provide applicable scientific content, post-assess to determine the impact of their teaching and write a research journal style report describing their project. The AR assignment is more structured than a typical action research project in order to support the pre-service teachers, many whom have never conducted a literature review, created assessments linked to research, or completed an AR project (Luera & Otto, 2005)

    Agricultural Impacts of Climate Change in Indiana and Potential Adaptations

    While all sectors of the economy can be impacted by climate variability and change, the agricultural sector is arguably the most tightly coupled to climate where changes in precipitation and temperature directly control plant growth and yield, as well as livestock production. This paper analyzes the direct and cascading effects of temperature, precipitation, and carbon dioxide (CO2) on agronomic and horticultural crops, and livestock production in Indiana through 2100. Due to increased frequency of drought and heat stress, models predict that the yield of contemporary corn and soybean varieties will decline by 8–21% relative to yield potential, without considering CO2 enhancement, which may offset soybean losses. These losses could be partially compensated by adaptation measures such as changes in cropping systems, planting date, crop genetics, soil health, and providing additional water through supplemental irrigation or drainage management. Changes in winter conditions will pose a threat to some perennial crops, including tree and fruit crops, while shifts in the USDA Hardiness Zone will expand the area suitable for some fruits. Heat stress poses a major challenge to livestock production, with decreased feed intake expected with temperatures exceeding 29 °C over 100 days per year by the end of the century. Overall, continued production of commodity crops, horticultural crops, and livestock in Indiana is expected to continue with adaptations in management practice, cultivar or species composition, or crop rotation

    Evaluation of quaternized and neutral muscarinic receptor ligands in normal and DES-treated rat

    The localization of quaternized muscarinic receptor (mAChR) antagonists, [11C]methyl tropanyl benzilate ([11C]MTRB) and [11C]methyl quinuclidinyl benzilate ([11C]MQNB), in rat pituitary was compared to that of [11C]tropanyl benzilate ([11C]TRB), a neutral antagonist. The quaternized ligands localize via a mAChR-mediated mechanism as shown by 60% reduction in radioactivity concentrations in the presence of QNB. [11C]TRB appears to localize primarily by a non-mAChR specific mechanism. Induction of pituitary prolactinomas by diethylstilbestrol resulted in a reduction of [11C]MTRB pituitary localization compared to normals. Elevated serum prolactin levels due to prolactinoma presence had no measurable effect on myocardial [11C]MTRB uptake or on K values.     In vitro and ex vivo evaluation of cyclic aminoalkyl benzilates as potential emission tomography ligands for the muscarinic receptor

    A series of muscarinic antagonists were screened as potential receptor imaging agents. (+)2[alpha]-tropanyl benzilate (TRB), N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate (NMPB) and several analogs amenable to labeling with positron emitting isotopes were evaluated for muscarinic binding to mouse brain tissue in vitro and ex vivo using [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate as the probe. The in vitro assay directly compared the innate binding affinities of the compounds. The rank order of binding (IC50) was TRB (0.7 nm), QNB (0.8 nm), scopolamine (1.3 nm) and NMPB (1.6 nm). The ex vivo assay was used to gain information regarding the pharmacokinetics and brain penetration of the compounds in live animals. Ex vivo results demonstrated that TRB was rapidly taken up into the brain and was equipotent with QNB in occupying muscarinic binding sites at early time points, but TRB binding decreased twice as fast over time as QNB binding.     Indiana’s Agriculture in a Changing Climate: A Report from the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment

    Indiana has long been one of the nation’s leaders in agricultural productivity. Favorable temperatures and precipitation help Indiana farmers generate over $31 billion worth of sales per year, making the state 11th in total agricultural products sold. Changes to the state’s climate over the coming decades, including increasing temperatures, changes in precipitation amounts and patterns, and rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air will result in several direct and indirect impacts to the state’s agricultural industry. This report from the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment (IN CCIA) describes how projected changes in the state’s climate will affect the health of livestock and poultry, growing season conditions for crops, the types of crops that can be planted, soil health and water quality as well as weed, pest and disease pressure for agricultural production statewide

    Complex magnetic ordering behavior in the frustrated perovskite Ba2MnMoO6

    New and exotic ground states of magnetic materials are highly sought after and are extensively studied for the insights they provide into the thermodynamics of disorder and fundamental magnetic interactions. By controlling the crystal structure of an appropriate magnetic lattice, it is possible to cause the strong magnetic exchange interactions to sum to zero and so be frustrated. Due to the presence of this frustration, the lowest energy configuration that results may be crucially dependent on the tiniest of energy differences between a multitude of states that have (almost) the same energy. The keen interest in these materials arises from the fact that these finely balanced systems offer a way of probing classical or quantum mechanical interactions that are of fundamental importance but are too weak to be observed in non-frustrated systems. Here, we combine local and crystallographic probes of the cation-ordered double perovskite Ba2MnMoO6 that contains a face-centered cubic lattice of S = 5/2 Mn2+ cations. Neutron diffraction measurements below 9.27(7) K indicate that a fourfold degenerate non-collinear antiferromagnetic state exists with almost complete ordering of the Mn2+ spins. Muon spin relaxation measurements provide a local probe of the magnetic fields inside this material over the t1/2 = 2.2 ”s lifetime of a muon, indicating a slightly lower NĂ©el transition temperature of 7.9(1) K. The dc susceptibility data do not show the loss of magnetization that should accompany the onset of the antiferromagnetic order; they indicate that a strongly antiferromagnetically coupled paramagnetic state [Ξ = −73(3) K] persists down to 4 K, at which temperature a weak transition occurs. The behavior of this material differs considerably from the closely related compositions Ba2MnMO6 (M = W, Te), which show collinear ordering arrangements and well defined antiferromagnetic transitions in the bulk susceptibility. This suggests that the Mo6+ cation leads to a fine balance between the nearest and next-nearest neighbor superexchange in these frustrated double perovskite structures
