    Electron capture to continuum in collisions of bare projectiles with Ne targets

    Abstract. We have investigated the cusp resulting from electron capture to the continuum of 1.25-5 MeV m u- ' fully stripped hydrogen and oxygen as a function of the collision energy and the detector angular resolution B o. It is revealed that the characteristic cusp shape parameters depend strongly on the experimental resolution. Our experimental data are "pared with the second-order Born theory and the impulse approximation. Both theories mnhrm the 8, dependence of the shape parameters and gjve a reasonable descrip-lion of the cusp asymmetry. However, theory tends to overestimate the absolute cross sections, in particular in the case of oxygen. 1

    Electron-spectroscopic investigation of metal-insulator transition in Sr2Ru1-xTixO4 (x=0.0-0.6)

    We investigate the nature and origin of the metal-insulator transition in Sr2Ru1-xTixO4 as a function of increasing Ti content (x). Employing detailed core, valence, and conduction band studies with x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies along with Bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy, it is shown that a hard gap opens up for Ti content greater than equal to 0.2, while compositions with x<0.2 exhibit finite intensity at the Fermi energy. This establishes that the metal-insulator transition in this homovalent substituted series of compounds is driven by Coulomb interaction leading to the formation of a Mott gap, in contrast to transitions driven by disorder effects or band flling.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.     Antisolvent addition at extreme conditions

    This article describes the use of antisolvent addition at high-pressure to aid precipitation and recovery of high-pressure phases to ambient pressure. Paracetamol (PCM) was used as a model system to demonstrate the principle due to the extensive literature of paracetamol at high-pressure and ambient pressure. We have observed that we are able to recover the orthorhombic form of paracetamol to ambient pressure using this technique, although solvent-mediated transformations are a hurdle. During this investigation we observed a new methanol solvate of paracetamol that is simlar in structure to the known form. The methanol solvate is stable to 0.2 GPa before transformation to the orthorhombic form that is known to be the stable form at high pressure

    Time-dependent Hamiltonian estimation for Doppler velocimetry of trapped ions

    The time evolution of a closed quantum system is connected to its Hamiltonian through Schroedinger's equation. The ability to estimate the Hamiltonian is critical to our understanding of quantum systems, and allows optimization of control. Though spectroscopic methods allow time-independent Hamiltonians to be recovered, for time-dependent Hamiltonians this task is more challenging. Here, using a single trapped ion, we experimentally demonstrate a method for estimating a time-dependent Hamiltonian of a single qubit. The method involves measuring the time evolution of the qubit in a fixed basis as a function of a time-independent offset term added to the Hamiltonian. In our system the initially unknown Hamiltonian arises from transporting an ion through a static, near-resonant laser beam. Hamiltonian estimation allows us to estimate the spatial dependence of the laser beam intensity and the ion's velocity as a function of time. This work is of direct value in optimizing transport operations and transport-based gates in scalable trapped ion quantum information processing, while the estimation technique is general enough that it can be applied to other quantum systems, aiding the pursuit of high operational fidelities in quantum control.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Relationship between hippocampal structure and memory function in elderly humans

    With progressing age, the ability to recollect personal events declines, whereas familiarity-based memory remains relatively intact. It has been hypothesized that age-related hippocampal atrophy may contribute to this pattern because of its critical role for recollection in younger humans and after acute injury. Here, we show that hippocampal volume loss in healthy older persons correlates with gray matter loss (estimated with voxel-based morphometry) of the entire limbic system and shows no correlation with an electrophysiological (event-related potential [ERP]) index of recollection. Instead, it covaries with more substantial and less specific electrophysiological changes of stimulus processing. Age-related changes in another complementary structural measure, hippocampal diffusion, on the other hand, seemed to be more regionally selective and showed the expected correlation with the ERP index of recollection. Thus, hippocampal atrophy in older persons accompanies limbic atrophy, and its functional impact on memory is more fundamental than merely affecting recollection

    In the July issue of Acta Crystallographica Section C, Nicholls et al. (2019[Nicholls, D., Elleman, C., Shankland, N. & Shankland, K. (2019). Acta Cryst. C75, 904-909.]) report the discovery of a new polymorph of αβ-D-lactose through the oven drying of concentrated aqueous solutions of D-lactose. The authors inter­est in this system was piqued in relation to the properties of chocolate crumb and the process by which the crumb is made. The drying process by which the crumb is produced is a potential mine of inter­esting solid-state transformations and in this case the authors simplified the system from a complex mixture of milk and sucrose to a concentrated aqueous solution of lactose. This simplification of the system has enabled the authors to focus in on the phase transitions that occur in the system and analyse the crystallization products with high-quality crystallographic information. Lucky for Acta Crystallographica Section C that such a delicious structural study was published here

    Perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancy

    The treatment of peritoneal surface malignancy mainly focuses on diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, pseudomyxoma peritonei from appendiceal cancer, and peritoneal dissemination from gastrointestinal and ovarian cancers. Cancer progression causes peritoneal implants to be distributed throughout the abdominopelvic cavity. These nodules plus the ascitic fluid result in abdominal distension. As the disease progresses, these tumors cause intestinal obstruction leading to debilitating symptoms and a greatly impaired quality of life. In the past, the prognosis of patients with peritoneal surface malignancy was regarded dismal and cure was not an option. Recently, cytoreductive surgery combined with perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy has shown an improved survival in selected patients with this disease. To date, multiple different treatment regimens of perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy have been used. This review focuses on the perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy currently in use in conjunction with cytoreductive surgery for the treatment of peritoneal surface malignancy at the Washington Cancer Institute

    Crystal structure of a mixed solvated form of amoxapine acetate

    The mixed solvated salt 4-(2-chloro­dibenzo[b,f][1,4]oxazepin-11-yl)piperazin-1-ium acetate-acetic acid-cyclo­hexane (2/2/1), C17H17ClN3O+·C2H3O2-·C2H4O2·0.5C6H12, crystallizes with one mol­ecule of protonated amoxapine (AXPN), an acetate anion and a mol­ecule of acetic acid together with half a mol­ecule of cyclo­hexane. In the centrosymmetric crystal, both enanti­omers of the protonated AXPN mol­ecule stack alternatively along [001]. Acetate anions connect the AXPN cations through N-H...O hydrogen bonding in the [010] direction, creating a sheet lying parallel to (100). The acetic acid mol­ecules are linked to the acetate anions via O-H...O hydrogen bonds within the sheets. Within the sheets there are also a number of C-H...O hydrogen bonds present. The cyclo­hexane solvent mol­ecules occupy the space between the sheets

    Responses to Prescribed Fire at Big Thicket National Preserve, Texas, USA

    US Federal land managers have utilized hand ignited prescribed fire at Big Thicket National Preserve in efforts to restore the structure and diversity of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forest. A fire ecology study was initiated by Rice University in the early 1990’s and the National Park Service has continued monitoring the plots. Ordination was applied to species abundance data to examine changes in vegetation communities from a variety of prescribed fire treatments and controls. The vegetation data was separated by size class to include overstory, small tree, large sapling and seedling data. Across the size classes and treatments, the sandhill and wetland savanna vegetation types remained less effected by fire treatments and only the upland pine responded to changes in the overstory. Upon reviewing fire return interval histories, it became evident that prescribed fire alone was not changing vegetation communities. Most of the plots did not have longleaf pine trees or seedlings present and only two plots that were mechanical treated showed distinction among other treatment regimes. Restoration treatments including the mechanical and chemical application and seedling plantings are necessary to ensure restoration of the longleaf pine forest structure and diverse understory vegetation
