    Ultrafast double magnetization switching in GdFeCo with two picosecond-delayed femtosecond pump pulses

    The recently discovered thermally induced magnetization switching (TIMS) induced by single femtosecond laser pulses in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloys proceeds on the picosecond time-scale. The rate at which data can be changed for use of TIMS in technological devices is limited by the processes leading to thermal equilibrium. In the present work, we address the question of whether it is possible to further excite switching via TIMS well before thermal equilibrium between subsystems is reached. In particular, we investigate the conditions for double thermally induced magnetic switching by the application of two shortly delayed laser pulses. These conditions become relevant for potential applications as it sets both a limit to rewrite data and demonstrates the importance of spatial confinement of a heat pulse to bit size, as neighboring bits may be accidentally re-switched for spatially extended pulse spots. To demonstrate this effect, we theoretically study the switching behavior in a prototypical ferrimagnetic GdFeCo alloy as a function of composition. We use computer simulations based on thermal atomistic spin dynamics and demonstrate the possibility of inducing a second switching event well before thermal equilibrium is reached and define the conditions under which it can occur. Our theoretical findings could serve as a guidance for further understanding of TIMS as well as to act as a guide for future applications

    The quasi-free-standing nature of graphene on H-saturated SiC(0001)

    We report on an investigation of quasi-free-standing graphene on 6H-SiC(0001) which was prepared by intercalation of hydrogen under the buffer layer. Using infrared absorption spectroscopy we prove that the SiC(0001) surface is saturated with hydrogen. Raman spectra demonstrate the conversion of the buffer layer into graphene which exhibits a slight tensile strain and short range defects. The layers are hole doped (p = 5.0-6.5 x 10^12 cm^(-2)) with a carrier mobility of 3,100 cm^2/Vs at room temperature. Compared to graphene on the buffer layer a strongly reduced temperature dependence of the mobility is observed for graphene on H-terminated SiC(0001)which justifies the term "quasi-free-standing".Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Applied Physics Letter

    Linking Legacies: Realising the Potential of the Rothamsted Long-Term Agricultural Experiments

    Long-term agricultural experiments are used to test the effects of different farm management practices on agricultural systems over time. The time-series data from these experiments is well suited to understanding factors affecting soil health and sustainable crop production and can play an important role for addressing the food security and environmental challenges facing society from climate change. The data from these experiments is unique and irreplaceable. We know from the Rothamsted experience that the datasets available are valued assets that can be used to address multiple scientific questions, and the reuse and impact of the data can be increased by making the data accessible to the wider community. However, to do this requires active data stewardship. Long-term experiments are also available as research infrastructures, meaning external researchers can generate new datasets, additional to the routine data collected for an experiment. The publication of the FAIR data principles has provided an opportunity for us to re-evaluate what active data stewardship means for realising the potential of the data from our long-term experiments. In this paper we discuss our approach to FAIR data adoption, and the challenges for refactoring and describing existing legacy data and defining meaningful linkages between datasets

    Gas-Forming Nonstarter Lactorbacilli

    An obligatory heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus wasatchii sp. nov. isolated from gassy Cheddar cheese was studied for growth, gas formation, salt tolerance and survival against pasteurization treatments at 63°C and 72°C. Initially, Lb. wasatchii was thought to only use ribose as a sugar source and we were interested in whether it could utilize galactose. Experiments to determine rate and extent of growth and gas production in carbohydrate restricted (CR) de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) medium under anaerobic conditions with various combinations of ribose and galactose at 12, 23, and 37°C were conducted with 23°C being the more optimum growth temperature of Lb. wasatchii. When grown on ribose (0.1%, 0.5%, and 1%), maximum specific growth rates (μmax) within each temperature were similar. When galactose was the only sugar, μmax was 2 to 4 times lower than with ribose. At all temperatures, highest final cell densities (OD640) of Lb. wasatchii were achieved in CR-MRS plus 1% ribose, 0.5% ribose and 0.5% galactose, or 1% ribose combined with 1% galactose. Similar μmaxvalues and final cell densities were achieved when 50% of ribose in CR-MRS was substituted with galactose. Such enhanced utilization of galactose in the presence of ribose to support bacterial growth has not previously been reported. It appears that Lb. wasatchii co-metabolizes ribose and galactose, utilizing ribose for energy and galactose for other functions such as cell wall biosynthesis. Co-utilization of both sugars could be an adaptation mechanism of Lb. wasatchii to the cheese environment to efficiently ferment available sugars for maximizing metabolism and growth. As expected, gas formation by the heterofermenter was observed only when galactose was present in the media. Growth experiments with MRS plus 1.5% ribose at pH 5.2 or 6.5, with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5% NaCl revealed that Lb. wasatchii is able to grow under salt and pH conditions typical of Cheddar cheese (4 to 5% salt-in-moisture, ~pH 5.2). Finally, we found Lb. wasatchii cannot survive LTLT pasteurization but survives HTST lab pasteurization with 4.5 log reduction occurred. The ability of Lb. wasatchii to survive HTST pasteurization and grow under cheese ripening conditions implies that the presence of this nonstarter lactic acid bacteria can be a serious contributor to gas formation and textural defects in Cheddar cheese

    Survival of microencapsulated probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei LBC-1e during manufacture of Mozzarellacheese and simulated gastric digestion

    An erythromycin-resistant strain of probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei LBC-1 (LBC-1e) was added to part-skim Mozzarella cheese in alginate-microencapsulated or free form at a level of 108 and 107 cfu/g, respectively. Survival of LBC-1e and total lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was investigated through the pasta filata process of cheese making (in which the cheese curd was heated to 55°C and stretched in 70°C-hot brine), followed by storage at 4°C for 6 wk and simulated gastric and intestinal digestion. This included incubation in 0.1 M and 0.01 M HCl, 0.9 M H3PO4, and a simulated intestinal juice consisting of pancreatin and bile salts in a pH 7.4 phosphate buffer. Some reductions were observed in both free and encapsulated LBC-1e during heating and stretching, with encapsulated LBC-1e surviving slightly better. Changes in total LAB losses during heating and stretching did not reach statistical significance. During storage, a decrease was observed in total LAB, but no statistically significant decrease was observed in LBC-1e. Survival during gastric digestion in HCl was dependent on the extent of neutralization of HCl by the cheese, with more survival in the weaker acid, in which pH increased to 4.4 after cheese addition. The alginate microcapsules did not provide any protection against the HCl. It is interesting that survival of the encapsulated LBC-1e was greater during incubation in H3PO4 than in the HCl gastric juices. Proper selection of simulated gastric digestion media is important for predicting the delivery of probiotic bacteria into the human intestinal tract. Neither free nor encapsulated LBC-1e was affected by incubation in the pancreatin-bile solution. Based on the level of probiotic bacteria in cheese needed to provide a health benefit and its survival during simulated gastric digestion, as determined in this study, it should theoretically be possible to lower the amount that needs to be ingested in cheese by up to a factor of 103 compared with other fermented dairy foods or when consumed as supplements

    Atomistic study on the pressure dependence of the melting point of NdFe12

    We investigated, using molecular dynamics, how pressure affects the melting point of the recently theorised and epitaxially grown structure NdFe12. We modified Morse potentials using experimental constants and a genetic algorithm code, before running two-phase solid-liquid coexistence simulations of NdFe12 at various temperatures and pressures. The refitting of the Morse potentials allowed us to significantly improve the accuracy in predicting the melting temperature of the constituent elements

    Temperature-dependent ferromagnetic resonance via the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation: Application to FePt

    Using the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch (LLB) equation for ferromagnetic materials, we derive analytic expressions for temperature dependent absorption spectra as probed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). By analysing the resulting expressions, we can predict the variation of the resonance frequency and damping with temperature and coupling to the thermal bath. We base our calculations on the technologically relevant L10_0 FePt, parameterised from atomistic spin dynamics simulations, with the Hamiltonian mapped from ab-initio parameters. By constructing a multi-macrospin model based on the LLB equation and exploiting GPU acceleration we extend the study to investigate the effects on the damping and resonance frequency in {\backslashmu}m sized structures

    Thermally induced magnetization switching in Gd/Fe multilayers

    A theoretical model of Gd/Fe multilayers is constructed using the atomistic spin dynamics formalism. By varying the thicknesses and number of layers we have shown that a strong dependence of the energy required for thermally induced magnetization switching (TIMS) is present; with a larger number of interfaces, lower energy is required. The results of the layer resolved dynamics show that the reversal process of the multilayered structures, similar to that of a GdFeCo alloy, is driven by the antiferromagnetic interaction between the transition-metal and rare-earth components. Finally, while the presence of the interface drives the reversal process, we show here that the switching process does not initiate at the surface but from the layers furthest from it, a departure from the alloy behavior which expands the classes of material types exhibiting TIMS

    A compartive study of the retentive capability of the Sydney mini-screw with 6mm orthodontic anchorage miniscrews in the tibia and femur of New Zealand rabbits by removal torque test

    Aim: To investigate the retentive capability of the Sydney Mini-screw with injectable bone cement by removal torque. Method: 16 New Zealand White rabbits were divided evenly into 2 groups, T1 0 week to assess primary stability and T2 8 weeks to test secondary stability. Three groups of miniscrews Sydney Mini-screw with Cement (SMSC) N=12, Sydney Miniscrew without cement (SMS) N=10 and control Aarhus (CA) 6mm screw N=10 were placed randomly and evenly between the right and left tibial and femoral sites. The SMSC and SMS required predrilling of a pilot hole and the SMSC had injectable bone cement PRODENSE. Removal torque was measured and Friedman's Test and two-sample t-test were used for statistical analysis, where appropriate. Results: Removal torque values at T1 for CA, SMS, SMSC were not significantly different (p=0.072) but were significantly different at T2 (p=0.012). Only SMS (p=0.006) showed statistically significant difference between T1 and T2. The different surgical locations at T2 did not statistically differ from each other either (p=0.948). Conclusion: Sydney Miniscrew with and without cement had significantly higher secondary stability and had a trend towards increased primary compared to a normal control miniscrew. More research is required with an increased sample size
