    Coherent lidars based on intracavity heterodyning of echo signals

    The development and technical realization of the method of laser sounding of the atmosphere based on the effects of mixing of reference and external fields of scattering inside a laser cavity are presented. An approximate theory of the method was developed on the basis of the investigations using the model of a three-mirror laser. The nonlinear effect of a wideband laser on frequency-dependent external influences of the atmosphere was investigated. The field measurements of gaseous composition of the atmosphere were performed on the basis of a given method of coherent reception using a tunable CO2 laser

    Exchange interaction and its tuning in magnetic binary chalcogenides

    Using a first-principles Green's function approach we study magnetic properties of the magnetic binary chalcogenides Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and Sb2Te3. The magnetic coupling between transition-metal impurities is long-range, extends beyond a quintuple layer, and decreases with increasing number of d electrons per 3d atom. We find two main mechanisms for the magnetic interaction in these materials: the indirect exchange interaction mediated by free carriers and the indirect interaction between magnetic moments via chalcogen atoms. The calculated Curie temperatures of these systems are in good agreement with available experimental data. Our results provide deep insight into magnetic interactions in magnetic binary chalcogenides and open a way to design new materials for promising applications

    Tight-binding study of high-pressure phase transitions in titanium: alpha to omega and beyond

    We use a tight-binding total energy method, with parameters determined from a fit to first-principles calculations, to examine the newly discovered gamma phase of titanium. Our parameters were adjusted to accurately describe the alpha Ti-omega Ti phase transition, which is misplaced by density functional calculations. We find a transition from omega Ti to gamma Ti at 102 GPa, in good agreement with the experimental value of 116 GPa. Our results suggest that current density functional calculations will not reproduce the omega Ti-gamma Ti phase transition, but will instead predict a transition from omega Ti to the bcc beta Ti phase.Comment: 3 encapsulated Postscript figures, submitted to Phyical Review Letter

    Effect of Angiogenesis-Related Cytokines on Rotator Cuff Disease: The Search for Sensitive Biomarkers of Early Tendon Degeneration

    Background Hallmarks of the pathogenesis of rotator cuff disease (RCD) include an abnormal immune response, angiogenesis, and altered variables of vascularity. Degenerative changes enhance production of pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory, and vascular angiogenesis-related cytokines (ARC) that play a pivotal role in the immune response to arthroscopic surgery and participate in the pathogenesis of RCD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ARC profile, ie, interleukin (IL): IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and angiogenin (ANG), in human peripheral blood serum and correlate this with early degenerative changes in patients with RCD. Methods Blood specimens were obtained from 200 patients with RCD and 200 patients seen in the orthopedic clinic for nonrotator cuff disorders. Angiogenesis imaging assays was performed using power Doppler ultrasound to evaluate variables of vascularity in the rotator cuff tendons. Expression of ARC was measured by commercial Bio-Plex Precision Pro Human Cytokine Assays. Results Baseline concentrations of IL-1β, IL-8, and VEGF was significantly higher in RCD patients than in controls. Significantly higher serum VEGF levels were found in 85% of patients with RCD, and correlated with advanced stage of disease (r = 0.75; P < 0.0005), average microvascular density (r = 0.68, P < 0.005), and visual analog score (r = 0.75, P < 0.0002) in RCD patients. ANG and IL-10 levels were significantly lower in RCD patients versus controls. IL-1β and ANG levels were significantly correlated with degenerative tendon grade in RCD patients. No difference in IL-6 and bFGF levels was observed between RCD patients and controls. Patients with degenerative changes had markedly lower ANG levels compared with controls. Power Doppler ultrasound showed high blood vessel density in patients with tendon rupture.     EFFECT OF DEXAMETHASONE ON INTERFERON-α-INDUCED DIFFERENTIATION OF MONOCYTES TO DENDRITIC CELLS

    Type I Interferons are potent inducers of monocyte’s differentiation into dendritic cells (DCs). However, sensitivity of these DCs to tolerogenic effect of glucocorticoids has not been previously investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dexamethasone upon maturation and functions of interferonalpha-induced DCs (IFN-DC) derived from healthy donors. DCs were generated from blood monocytes cultured for 5 days with GM-CSF and IFNα, in absence or with addition of dexamethasone (10-6 M), applied on the 3rd day. Addition of dexamethasone inhibited IFN-DC maturation, which manifested with increasing numbers of CD14+ cells and decreased percentage of CD83+ DCs. Dexamethasone did not significantly influence HLA-DR, CD86 and B7H1 expression. However, it caused a 2-fold increase of tolerogenic TLR-2 molecule expression. Along with suppression of IFN-DC maturation, dexamethasone inhibited production of proinflammatory/Th1 cytokines (TNFα, IL-1, IL-2, IFNγ, IL-12), and some chemokines (MIP-1α, RANTES). Dexamethasone-treated IFN-DCs exhibited a 2-fold lower allostimulatory activity in mixed lymphocyte culture (MLC). Worth of note, the capacity of IFN-DCs to stimulate T cell proliferative response in allo-MLC showed direct correlation with CD83 expression on DCs, and an inverse correlation with CD14 and TLR-2. Evaluation of Th1/Th2-polarizing activity of IFN-DCs showed that dexamethasone exerted a pronounced inhibitory effect upon ability of DCs to stimulate T cells for IFNγ production, along with lowgrade suppressive effect upon ability of DCs to induce IL-6 production, thus being indicative for a dominance of Th2-polarizing activity of IFN-DCs under the influence of dexamethasone. In general, the data obtained show that IFN-DCs are sensitive to tolerogenic action of dexamethasone, and, hence, the IFN-DCs may mediate the immunomodulatory effect of glucocorticosteroids and represent novel candidate cells for the development of therapeutic tolerogenic DC-based vaccines applicable for management of autoimmune disorders

    CLINICAL EFFECTS OF MESENCHYMAL STROMAL CELLS IN LYMPHOMA PATIENTS WITH AUTOLOGOUS HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION

    The clinical and laboratory effects of bone-marrow derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) in patients with malignant lymphomas following autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) have been investigated. Co-transplantation of MSC in average dose of 0,178 106/kg was conducted in 74 patients with auto-HSCT. The control group included 83 patients eligible for standard HSCT. We revealed the decreasing of the period of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia when hematopoietic stem cells were co-transplanted with low doses ex vivo expanded autologous MSC. Patients with MSC co-transplantation were differed by more effective early lymphocyte recovery. At the same time MSC co-transplantation did not increase the incidence of infectious complications and cases of renal and. hepatic toxicity. Patients with MSC co-transplantation did not differ from opposite group by 5-year overall survival, but were characterized by significantly better progression-free survival

    THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF GRAFT CELL SUBTYPES AND ITS CYTOKINE PRODUCTION OF LYMPHOMA AND LEUCOSIS PATIENTS

    Cell subtypes and cytokine profile of apheresis products collected from lymphoma and acute leucosis patients were analyzed. It was shown, that acute leucosis patients' grafts contained higher relative numbers of naïve T-cells, CD4+CD25high T-cells, T-lymphocytes (non-significant trend) and lower counts of granulocytes. Significant increase of relative numbers of dividing CD34+ cells (in S, G2/M phases of the cell cycle) was demonstrated, in acute leucosis patients' grafts. In lymphoma grafts the levels of CD34+ cells in G0/G1 phases were found, to be increased. Cells isolated from grafts of acute leucosis patients characterized by higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines production, such as IL-1, IL-6, MIP-1β, TNF-α, IL-8, IFN-γ (the last two ones— non-significant trend) and cytokines, essential for humoral immune response (IL-4 and — in trend — IL-10). The existing differences didn't influence on effectiveness of early lymphocyte recovery
