Gender, Time Use, and Labor Income in Guinea: Micro and Macro Analyses

Higher incomes for women can have significant beneficial impacts for poverty reduction both in the short run by providing more resources to households and in the long run by increasing investments in the human capital of children. Substantial research has been done using microeconomic household survey data on gender disparities in labor incomes in developing countries in recent years. The first contribution of this paper is to summarize some of that research as applied to Guinea. However, microeconomic studies may not necessarily provide insights on how broad structural shifts in an economy could affect differently opportunities for work and income generation for men and women. In the second part of the paper, we use a recent Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for Guinea to assess how growth in various sectors of the economy could affect the incomes of women and men both directly and indirectly through multiplier effects. We find that an expansion of sectors oriented primarily towards domestic consumption could have a larger positive impact on the labor income share of women than an expansion of export-oriented sectors.Gender; Labor income; Social Accounting Matrix; Guinea

Performance of Fe y Alegria high school students in Colombia : is it a matter of Fe (faith) or Alegria (joy) ?

Fe y Alegria is a catholic network of schools that started operations in Colombia in 1971, and in 2009 served more than 72,000 students in 61 schools. This paper assesses the performance of Fe y Alegria secondary schools in Colombia using test scores for Spanish and mathematics, as well as detailed information on the characteristics of the household to which students belong. Simple statistics suggest that Fe y Alegria schools perform worse than other schools for all years in the sample. However, Fe y Alegria schools also cater to poorer students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Once controls are included for student background, Fe y Alegria schools actually often perform as well and in some cases better than other schools for mathematics and Spanish, thus partially reversing the previous finding.Tertiary Education,Secondary Education,Gender and Education,Teaching and Learning,Primary Education

Oscillation of high energy neutrinos in Choked GRBs

It is believed that choked gamma-ray bursts (CGRBs) are the potential candidates for the production of high energy neutrinos in GeV-TeV energy range. These CGRBs out number the successful GRBs by many orders. So it is important to observe neutrinos from these cosmological objects with the presently operating neutrino telescope IceCube. We study the three flavor neutrino oscillation of these high energy neutrinos in the presupernova star environment which is responsible for the CGRB. For the presupernova star we consider three different models and calculate the neutrino oscillation probabilities, as well as neutrino flux on the surface of these star. The matter effect modifies the neutrino flux of different flavors on the surface of the star. We have also calculated the flux of these high energy neutrinos on the surface of the Earth. We found that for neutrino energies below \le 10 TeV the flux ratio does not amount to 1:1:1, whereas for higher energy neutrinos it does

Reportaje audiovisual: Análisis de la acogida de niños saharauis en España

Tras la ocupación del Sáhara Occidental por parte del reino de Marruecos y Mauritania y el desentendimiento de España, los saharauis se vieron obligados a huir hacia Argelia, donde encontraron refugio. Desde hace más de 40 años generaciones enteras viven en estos campamentos de refugiados en la zona de Tinduf. El programa Vacaciones en Paz permite que niños de entre 7 y 12 años puedan quedarse en casas de acogida en todo el territorio español durante los meses de verano, cuando la vida en los campamentos se hace más difícil por las altas temperaturas. El presente reportaje audiovisual se realiza con el objetivo de dar a conocer la situación del pueblo saharaui y, en concreto, de los menores que llegan todos los veranos a España gracias a Vacaciones en Paz. Para ello, mediante seis entrevistas, se recogen testimonios de las asociaciones y familias acogedoras, quienes retratan las duras condiciones de vida en los campamentos y cómo ayuda los niños el pasar los meses estivales lejos del desierto. El documental refleja, en definitiva, la importancia de este programa para los menores saharauis y evidencia la necesidad de tratar estos temas en los medios de comunicación.After the occupation of western Sahara by the Kingdom of Morocco and Mauritania, and the disengagement of Spain, the Saharan were forced to flee to Argelia where they found shelter. For more than 40 years, entire generations live in these refugee camps in the area of Tindouf. The Vacaciones en Paz program enables by law that every kid from 7 to 12 years old may stay in a foster home in all the Spanish territory during the months of summer, when life in these camps becomes harder due to high temperatures. Dificultades para la construcción de un modelo algebraico de segundo orden a través de sucesiones, para definir el enésimo término

Esta investigación que forma parte de las tesis de maestría, se realiza en México con estudiantes de secundaria, de edades 14-15 años. El objetivo es dar a conocer las dificultades; que a partir de un análisis comparativo, tienen los alumnos al tratar de construir una expresión algebraica de segundo orden que defina el enésimo término al usar sucesiones figurativas. Para ello, se ha estado haciendo uso de dos de sus cuatro componentes del Modelo Teórico Local [MTL] (Filloy, 1999): modelo de enseñanza y de procesos cognoscitivos. Se realiza una evaluación diagnóstica, se clasifica a la población según los distintos perfiles: alto, medio y bajo rendimiento, para observar en entrevista clínica videograbada y elaborar un reporte de observaciones acorde al esquema de desarrollo de experimentación perteneciente al MTL

Procesos de generalización que intervienen en el aprendizaje del alumno al hacer uso de sucesiones

El presente reporte de investigación de tipo cualitativo, tiene por objeto dar a conocer, como parte de la investigación, resultados relacionados con los procesos de generalización que se presentan en alumnos de edades 14-15 años al tratar con sucesiones figurativas, en donde el patrón matemático se comporta en forma lineal y cuadrática. Se señala que el hacer uso de patrones, desarrolla el pensamiento algebraico, así como también permite a los estudiantes desarrollar la comprensión del concepto como establecer relaciones matemáticas. Como parte de la perspectiva teórica se ha empleado el Modelo Teórico Local, considerando tres de los cuatro componentes: Competencia formal, modelo de enseñanza y procesos cognitivos
