    Airborne lidar measurements of El Chichon stratospheric aerosols, October 1982 to November 1982

    A coordinated flight mission to determine the spatial distribution and aerosol characteristics of the El Chichon produced stratospheric aerosol was flown in October to November 1982. The mission covered 46 deg N to 46 deg S and included rendezvous between balloon-, airplane-, and satellite-borne sensors. The lidar data from the flight mission are presented. Representative profiles of lidar backscatter ratio, plots of the integrated backscattering function versus latitude, and contours of backscatter mixing ratio versus altitude and latitude are given. In addition, tables containing numerical values of the backscatter ratio and backscattering functions versus altitude are supplied for each profile. The bulk of the material produced by the El Chichon eruptions of late March 10 to early April 1982 resided between latitudes from 5 to 7 deg S to 35 to 37 deg N and was concentrated above 21 km in a layer that peaked at 23 to 25 km. In this latitude region, peak scattering ratios at a wavelength of 0.6943 micron were approximately 24. The results of this mission are presented in a ready-to-use format for atmospheric and climatic studies

    A NASA Electra airplane, outfitted with a lidar system, was flown in January to February 1983 between the latitudes of 27 deg N and 76 deg N. One of the primary purposes of this mission was to determine the spatial distribution and aerosol characteristics of the El Chichon-produced stratospheric material. This report presents the lidar data from that flight mission. Representative profiles of lidar backscatter ratio, plots of the integrated backscattering function versus latitude, and contours of backscatter mixing ratio versus altitude and latitude are given. It addition, tables containing numerical values of the backscatter ratio and backscattering function versus altitude are supplied for each profile. The largest amount of material produced by the El Chichon eruptions of late March to early April 1982, which was measured by this flight, resided between 35 deg N and 52 deg N. Peak backscatter ratios at a wavelength of 0.6943 micro m decreased from 8 to 10 at the lower latitudes to 3 at the higher latitudes. Backscatter ratio profiles taken while crossing the polar vortex show that the high-altitude material from El Chichon arrived at the north polar region sometime after the winter polar vortex was established.     An experimental survey flight to determine the spatial distribution and aerosol characteristics of the El Chichon-produced stratospheric aerosol was conducted in May 1983. The mission included several different sensors flown abroad the NASA Convair 990 at latitudes between 72 deg. and 56 deg. S. This report presents the lidar data from that flight mission. Representative profiles of lidar backscatter ratio, plots of integrated backscattering function versus latitude, and contours of backscatter mixing ratio versus altitude and latitude are given. In addition, tables containing numerical values of the backscatter ratio and backscattering function versus altitude are supplied for each profile. By May 1983, material produced by the El Chichon eruptions of late March-early April 1982 had spread throughout the latitudes covered by this mission. However, the most massive portion of the material resided north of 33 deg. N and was concentrared below 21 km. In this latitude region (33 deg. N to 72 deg. N), peak backscatter ratios at a wavelength of 0.6943 microns varied between 3.5 and 4.5, and the peak integratred backscattering function was about 18 X 10 to the -4 power/sr, corresponding to a peak optical depth calculated to be approximately 0.08.     Investigation and quality assessment of the Past Weather Code from the Integrated Surface Database

    Quantitative SYNOP Code weather variables such as rainfall amount, although of high societal and environmental importance, are frequently subject to recording errors and inhomogeneities resulting in uncertain conclusions. Here we assess the viability of the more qualitative Past Weather Code (PWC) for its use in robust climate analysis in the belief that it is less prone to both random and systematic errors. The Past Weather Code data, from a selection of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration’s Integrated Surface Database (ISD) (4731 sufficiently long stations), is quality assessed by searching for inhomogeneities in station PWC time series, removing the offending stations and averaging the remaining stations into a global gridded dataset. PWCs 6 (Rainfall), 7 (Snowfall) and 9 (Thunderstorms) are found to robustly exhibit seasonal features, e.g. the Indian monsoon and peak Northern Hemispheric winter snowfall. Precipitation responses to the North Atlantic Oscillation are also detected in winter PWC 6 data over Europe

    We make an exact field theoretical computation of the conformal anomaly for two-dimensional submanifold observables. By including a scalar field in the definition for the Wilson surface, as appropriate for a spontaneously broken A_1 theory, we get a conformal anomaly which is such that N times it is equal to the anomaly that was computed in hep-th/9901021 in the large N limit and which relied on the AdS-CFT correspondence.     Are the school prevention programmes - aimed at de-normalizing smoking among youths - beneficial in the long term? An example from the Smoke Free Class Competition in Italy

    Tobacco smoking by young people is of great concern because it usually leads to regular smoking, nicotine addiction and quitting difficulties. Young people "hooked" by tobacco maintain the profits of the tobacco industry by replacing smokers who quit or die. If new generations could be tobacco-free, as supported by tobacco endgame strategies, the tobacco epidemic could end within decades. Smoking prevention programmes for teens are offered by schools with the aim to prevent or delay smoking onset. Among these, the Smoke Free Class Competition (SFC) was widely implemented in Europe. Its effectiveness yielded conflicting results, but it was only evaluated at short/medium term (6 - 18 months). The aim of this study is to evaluate its effectiveness after a longer follow-up (3 to 5 years) in order to allow enough time for the maturing of the students and the internalization of the experience and its contents. Fifteen classes were randomly sampled from two Italian high schools of Bologna province that regularly offered the SFC to first year students; 382 students (174 participating in the SFC and 208 controls) were retrospectively followed-up and provided their "smoking histories". At the end of their last year of school (after 5 years from the SFC), the percentage of students who stated that they were regular smokers was lower among the SFC students than in controls: 13.5% vs 32.9% (p=0.03). From the students' "smoking histories", statistically significant protective ORs were observed for SFC students at the end of 1st and 5th year: 0.42 (95% CI 0.19-0.93) and 0.32 (95% CI 0.11-0.91) respectively. Absence of smokers in the family was also a strongly statistically significant factor associated with being a non-smoker student. These results suggest that SFC may have a positive impact on lowering the prevalence of smoking in the long term (5 years)

    We consider scalar field theory in the D-dimensional space with nontrivial metric and local action functional of most general form. It is possible to construct for this model a generalization of renormalization procedure and RG-equations. In the fixed point the diffeomorphism and Weyl transformations generate an infinite algebraic structure of D-Dimensional conformal field theory models.
