Review of \u3ci\u3eInequity in the Technopolis: Race, Class, Gender, and the Digital Divide in Austin\u3c/i\u3e edited by Joseph Straubhaar, Jeremiah Spence, Zeynep Thfekci, and Roberta G. Lentz
Austin, Texas, by most accounts, is one of the most attractive cities in America. It is said by many people and magazines to be one of the best cities in which to live. Outside of Silicon Valley, it possesses some of the best high-tech companies and the most generous investors in high technology. Young people from across the country attend the University of Texas at Austin- and few of them ever seem to leave. It has become the Urbantopia of our age, the model for the new creative economy.
But is it? How much of what we know about Austin is simply its branding, not its substance? This book by Joseph Straubhaar and his colleagues from the University of Texas suggests that all is not perfect in Urbantopia

Political sociology
Thoroughly revised and updated in this fifth edition, Political Sociology: Power and Participation in the Modern World illustrates the broad social bases of politics and also shows how politics and governmental actions can influence the fate of nations and their citizens. Providing insight into recent political sociological theories, Anthony M. Orum and new coauthor John G. Dale help students make sense of the many major social and political changes taking place in the world today. They examine such timely topics as the economy and politics, states and societies, civil society and politics, basic forms of political rule, power and equality in modern America, political parties, and citizen participation. Bringing together a wide variety of perspectives and ideas, this unique text also familiarizes students with recent scholarship on the American welfare state, social networks, and the business world. Throughout, the authors provide students with current assessments of popular incendiary topics, increasing their awareness and encouraging them to become more involved in the material. Classic and comprehensive, Political Sociology: Power and Participation in the Modern World, Fifth Edition, is ideal for upper-level undergraduate courses in political sociology

Migration and Urban Flows
Kashkovskaya N. Migration and Urban Flows. In: Orum AM, ed. The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Urban and Regional Studies. Wiley Blackwell encyclopedias of environment and society . Hoboken: Wiley-Blackwell; 2019: 1244-1249.In the course of globalization of the world economy, cities are increasingly seen as nodes in networks that are shaped and constituted by manifold flows intersecting there, including migration flows. Early conceptualizations of cities from the network perspective, such as “global city,” assumed that only a small set of powerful cities are embedded in the network of interrelations, and saw the role of migrants primarily as part of the urban labor force as well as the factor responsible for the increasing diversity in the city. With the assertion of a transnational perspective on migration, migrants began to be seen as actors and all cities as being affected by global interconnections. Relationships between migrants and cities are theorized in the concepts “transnational urbanism,” “transnational urban spaces,” and in “comparative theory of locality,” which has been developed based on the concept of city scale
