Food Expenses in the Rhythm of Daily Life. An Analysis of Household Accounts

The subject of detailed analysis presented in the article is the daily shopping and food expenses incurred by a single family resident in a large Polish city in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland. The source material for the analysis is the ledger of daily food expenses originating from a set of household accounts in the household of a female clerk in Łódź, which in its entirety covers the period from August 1952 to August 2004. The analysis presented herein, however, is based on a detailed analysis of records pertaining to only three selected months of the autumn of 1960, that is expenses dated from 1st September to 30th November 1960. The main aim of the analysis is not to exhaustively document the specificity of the period of the People’s Republic of Poland, but only to present the source material and its interpretative capability, as well as to show a small section from the picture of daily life revealed by one family’s three-month expenses. The author demonstrates that a detailed description of the daily shopping may constitute a very clear illustration of the specificity of private life in the given time and cultural space, as well as a reflection of not only the socio-economic, but also the political conditions in which the shopping is done

A COMPARISON OF WORD PROCESSING INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS IN KANSAS COMMUNITY COLLEGES AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of instructional methods utilized in community colleges in the State of Kansas as compared to a random sampling of secondary schools in Southeastern Kansas. Also included in the study was an analysis of word processing courses currently offered with respect to software packages being taught. In addition, change in enrollment and if general education courses included a course in word processing were also studied

How a gathering becomes a holiday. Modern social practices of migrants from flooded zones in Ukraine

The article presents the modern practices of remembering sunken Ukrainian villages at annual or periodic gatherings of migrants from flooded areas in various regions of Ukraine. It describes the subsequent stages of organising such events, from spontaneous visits to the flooded place to a solemn meeting of the villagers on the banks of the reservoir. It also discusses the ritualised mechanisms and means by which an ordinary meeting of group of people is transformed into a festival through the sacralisation of the gathering’s time and place (by building memorials, such as chapels, crosses or monuments, the publication of memoirs, organization of exhibitions, etc.), through the appropriate selection of participants and the use of suitable identifiers of a celebration time (e.g. a shared meal, musical accompaniment, the performance of special songs, the use of national costumes, the taking of memorial photographs).W artykule zostały przedstawione współczesne praktyki upamiętniania zatopionych wsi ukraińskich, podejmowane w trakcie corocznych lub okazjonalnych spotkań przesiedleńców z terenów zalanych w różnych regionach Ukrainy. Opisano kolejne etapy organizowania tego rodzajudziałań, od spontanicznych odwiedzin zalanego miejsca do uroczystych spotkań mieszkańców wsi nad brzegiem zbiornika wodnego. Ukazano zrytualizowane mechanizmy i środki, dzięki którym zwykłe spotkanie grupy ludzi nabiera charakteru święta poprzez sakralizację czasu i miejsca spotkania (budowanie obiektów pamięci, takich jak kaplice, krzyże, pomniki, publikację wspomnień, organizację wystaw itp.), dobór uczestników, wykorzystanie odpowiednich identyfikatorów świętowania (wspólna uczta, akompaniament muzyczny, wykonywanie pieśni okolicznościowych, użycie strojów ludowych, pamiątkowe fotografie)

“About God at war”. Forms and features of religious Internet folklore pertaining to the Russo-Ukrainian war

The article focuses on the issue of religious online folklore disseminated in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the popular social media platform Facebook (Ukrainian version), between April and June 2022. The aim of the analysis of the collected material presented in the text is to show the basic forms and functions of religious folklore in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian war, their relationship with other messages of religious content (prayers, appeals and supplications) and the specificity of Internet communication. The authors undertake to show the connections the studied messages exhibit with religious thinking and the Christian tradition on a verbal and visual level, as well as the identity of the Ukrainian people. They also point to the importance of Internet communication in times of helplessness and deep crisis.Artykuł dotyczy problematyki religijnego folkloru internetowego, jaki upowszechniany był w związku z inwazją Rosji na Ukrainę na popularnym portalu społecznościowym Facebook (wersja ukraińska), od kwietnia do czerwca 2022 roku. Celem prezentowanej w tekście analizy zebranego materiału jest ukazanie podstawowych form i funkcji folkloru religijnego w kontekście wojny rosyjsko-ukraińskiej, ich związku z innymi przekazami o treści religijnej (modlitwy, apele i prośby błagalne) oraz specyfiką komunikacji internetowej. Autorki starają się pokazać powiązania badanych przekazów z myśleniem człowieka religijnego i tradycją chrześcijańską na poziomie werbalnym i wizualnym oraz tożsamością narodu ukraińskiego. Wskazują również na istotne znaczenie komunikacji internetowej w sytuacji bezradności i doświadczenia głębokiego kryzysu

Niesteroidowe leki przeciwzapalne-mechanizm działania, zastosowanie i skutki uboczne ich nadużywania

Niesteroidowe leki przeciwzapalne (NLPZ) to szeroka, niejednorodna grupa leków o działaniu przeciwbólowym, przeciwzapalnym oraz przeciwgorączkowym. Mechanizm działania leków z tej grupy polega na blokowaniu dwóch form enzymu cyklooksygenazy COX-1 oraz COX-2. NLPZ znajdują zastosowanie w reumatologii jako leki przeciwzapalne. Stosowane są również jako leki przeciwbólowe w schorzeniach bólowych oraz rzadziej w stanach gorączkowych. Skutkami ubocznymi stosowania NLPZ mogą być zaburzenia ze strony układu pokarmowego, mogą nawet powodować chorobę wrzodową żołądka jak również wywierać szkodliwy wpływ na nerki i wątrobę

Concomitant Administration of Different Doses of Simvastatin with Ivabradine Influence on PAI-1 and Heart Rate in Normo- and Hypercholesterolaemic Rats

Ivabradine is a novel heart rate lowering agent that inhibits If ionic current in the sinus node and demonstrates antiischaemic and antianginal activity. The aim of the paper was to investigate the effect its dose-dependent drug-drug interaction with simvastatin inhibitor HMGCo-A has on PAI-1 blood level, heart rate and blood pressure. The experiments were performed in hyper- and normocholesterolemic Wistar rats receiving simvastatin (1 and 20 mg × kg−1 bw) with ivabradine (10 mg × kg−1 bw) during a 4-week period. Ivabradine exacerbated the decrease of PAI-1 in normocholesterolemic animals receiving simvastatin at a dose of 1 mg/kg bw and was not observed to have any significant influence on the PAI-1 values in rats receiving 20 mg × kg−1 bw simvastatin. Ivabradine, coadministered with simvastatin given at a dose of 20 mg × kg−1 bw, significantly slowed the heart rate in normocholesterolaemic and hypercholesterolaemic groups as compared to the group receiving ivabradine alone. Conclusion. The administration of ivabradine to normocholesterolaemic and hypercholesterolaemic rats receiving simvastatin significantly exacerbated the slowing of heart rate with no effect on blood pressure. The administration of ivabradine has been shown to demonstrate different effects on PAI-1 values depending on lipid disorders

Kobieta – aktywistka życia codziennego

The objective of the article is a deliberation on the activity of women in the role of everyday life organizers, who run their own households. The author analyzes in detail the practice undertaken by women in the Polish People’s Republic era (mainly in the 1970s and 1980s), and her research materials include fragments of notes that come from the collection of household bills which were collected by a clerk from Lodz between 1954 and 2004, and detailed ethnographical interviews with women running households in Lodz in the 1970s and 1980s. The author notices that the respondents treated their work in their households in the period of the Polish People’s Republic as an important element of their own life experience and the source of satisfaction. They had an important role which was worth recognition, they derived pleasure from the fact that they were able to create good conditions of life (as much as it was possible then) for themselves and their closest ones. In the situation of the overall social crisis they would demonstrate bigger determination than men and the will to fight for a better fate. In the author’s opinion, reconstructing women’s experiences of that kind constitutes a great way to have a deep understanding of a local cultural tradition and helps to show the impact of “ordinary” women on the creation of cultural daily life.Tematem niniejszego artykułu jest aktywność kobiet w roli organizatorek życia codziennego, prowadzących własne gospodarstwa domowe. Autorka analizuje szczegółowo praktyki podejmowane przez kobiety łódzkie w okresie PRL-u (głównie lata siedemdziesiąte i osiemdziesiąte XX wieku), a materiałem badawczym są fragmenty zapisków pochodzące ze zbioru rachunków domowych prowadzonych przez łódzką urzędniczkę w latach 1954–2004 oraz pogłębione wywiady etnograficzne z kobietami prowadzącymi gospodarstwa domowe w Łodzi w latach siedemdziesiątych i osiemdziesiątych XX wieku. Autorka dostrzega, że badane kobiety traktowały swoją pracę podejmowaną w ramach gospodarstwa domowego w okresie PRL-u jako ważny element własnych życiowych doświadczeń i źródło satysfakcji. Zajmowały one wysoką i godną uznania pozycję w rodzinie, czerpały przyjemność z umiejętnego stwarzania, na miarę możliwości, dobrych warunków życia dla siebie i swoich bliskich. W sytuacji ogólnospołecznego kryzysu jako kobiety wykazywały większą niż mężczyźni determinację i wolę walki o lepszy los. Plant-Based Diet and Social Involvement in the Discursive Practices of Online Communities

The subject of the considerations undertaken in the article is the plant-based diet, the practice of which in the contemporary culture is strongly entangled in identity and world-view projects and actions to change social life and food culture. The author, using the method of virtual ethnography and discourse analysis, examines in detail the culinary discourse used for mutual communication of the supporters of the plant-based diet in the space of a Polish social networking site (Facebook). Such an analysis of the discourse serves to show the specificity of the modern plant-based diet, but also to show the involvement of the author’s interesting culinary practices in world-oriented pro-ecological, economic and political activities. Thus, the plant-based diet appears in the presented analysis in a detailed social and environmental context, preserving its culinary specificity and autonomy, but at the same time illustrating important processes of current cultural changes in Poland.Przedmiotem rozważań podjętych w artykule jest dieta roślinna, której praktykowanie w kulturze współczesnej uwikłane jest silnie w projekty tożsamościowe i światopoglądowe oraz działania na rzecz zmian życia społecznego i kultury jedzenia. Autorka, wykorzystując metodę etnografii wirtualnej i analizę dyskursu, poddaje szczegółowej analizie dyskurs kulinarny, służący wzajemnej komunikacji zwolenników diety roślinnej w przestrzeni polskojęzycznego portalu społecznościowego (Facebook). Tego rodzaju analiza dyskursu służy pokazaniu specyfiki współczesnej diety roślinnej, ale także ukazaniu uwikłania interesujących autorkę praktyk kulinarnych w światopoglądowo zaangażowane działania proekologiczne, gospodarcze i polityczne. Dieta roślinna pojawia się zatem w przedstawionej analizie w szczegółowym kontekście społecznym i środowiskowym, zachowując swoją kulinarną specyfikę i autonomię, ale jednocześnie obrazując ważne procesy aktualnych przemian kulturowych w Polsce
