Predicting the mass spectrum of polymerizing linoleates using weighted random graph modeling

Biopolymers and biopolymer networks that form via autoxidation, like in drying of oil paint or fat degradation in food components, contain a large variety of monomeric building blocks. While the monomer variety complicates the modeling itself, obtaining experimental validation of infinite polymer networks is inherently difficult as well. A new model is developed, where an automated reaction network generation (ARNG) procedure is used to automatically generate the monomer components, structures and masses, and their reactions. This methodology is combined with random graph (RG) modeling to predict global polymer properties: distributions of numbers of monomer units and molar masses, gel point and gel fraction. This computational framework is applied to two model systems for linseed oil paint binder: the polymerization of ethyl linoleate (EL) and methyl linoleate (ML). A novel method was constructed to deal with the variability of monomer masses that complicates inferring molar mass from monomer number distribution. By modeling the polymer as a weighted random graph where the nodes contain information about the monomer masses in the system, the total weight of the finite connected components is computed. The predicted mass spectrum of finite connected components is used for validation with experimental data. A size exclusion chromatography (SEC) trace of ML is employed, which after calibration using the proposed framework, proves consistency between model and SEC data. The model provides a practical approach to both characterize complex biopolymers as polymers in terms of molar mass distribution and gel point, while preserving the information down to the level of monomeric units.</p

Biosensors Based on Micro-algae for Ecological Monitoring of the Aquatic Environment

    Get PDF
This chapter is devoted to research possibilities of using micro-algae as sensor elements for biological sensors of aquatic pollutants. The characteristics of the fluorescence of micro-algae pigments caused by laser light, called laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), were used as informative parameters. It is shown that the functioning of biological sensors is determined by the consistency and concentration of micro-algal cells as well as their internal state, which depends on the temperature, illumination, and chemical composition of the water. The results indicate a significant dependence of the LIF intensities of micro-algae from exposure of heavy metal ions, temperature, and illumination. In text is demonstrated specificity of the reaction of various micro-algae, belonging to different phylum. This fact can be used for identify the phylum of micro-algae in situ, and for the creation the biosensors of ecological monitoring aquatic environment

В статье рассматриваются способы репрезентации национальной идентичности на примере жанра сказки, представленные в творчестве писателей США.This article considers the ways of representing national identity with reference to fairytales written by US authors (L. F. Baum, C. Sandburg, J. Thurber, E. B. White). The article aims at exploring the multitude of means employed by the authors to establish a new national tradition of the genre (the correlation between fantasy and realism, the system of characters, poetic onomastics, style and plot characteristics of the literary fairytales of the first half of the twentieth century, etc.)

Effect of EMIC waves on relativistic and ultrarelativistic electron populations: Ground-based and Van Allen Probes observations

Abstract We study the effect of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves on the loss and pitch angle scattering of relativistic and ultrarelativistic electrons during the recovery phase of a moderate geomagnetic storm on 11 October 2012. The EMIC wave activity was observed in situ on the Van Allen Probes and conjugately on the ground across the Canadian Array for Real-time Investigations of Magnetic Activity throughout an extended 18 h interval. However, neither enhanced precipitation of \u3e0.7 MeV electrons nor reductions in Van Allen Probe 90° pitch angle ultrarelativistic electron flux were observed. Computed radiation belt electron pitch angle diffusion rates demonstrate that rapid pitch angle diffusion is confined to low pitch angles and cannot reach 90°. For the first time, from both observational and modeling perspectives, we show evidence of EMIC waves triggering ultrarelativistic (~2-8 MeV) electron loss but which is confined to pitch angles below around 45° and not affecting the core distribution. Key Points EMIC wave activity is not associated with precipitation of MeV electrons EMIC waves do not deplete the ultra-relativistic belt down to 90° EMIC waves cause loss of low pitch angle electrons with energies ~2-8 MeV

Exposure of Nuclear Track Emulsion to a Mixed Beam of Relativistic 12^{12}N, 10^{10}C, and 7^7Be Nuclei

A nuclear track emulsion was exposed to a mixed beam of relativistic 12^{12}N, 10^{10}C, and 7^7Be nuclei having a momentum of 2 GeV/cc per nucleon. The beam was formed upon charge exchange processes involving 12^{12}C primary nuclei and their fragmentation. An analysis indicates that 10^{10}C nuclei are dominant in the beam and that 12^{12}N nuclei are present in it. The charge topology of relativistic fragments in the coherent dissociation of these nuclei is presented.Comment: ISSN 1063-7788, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 201

Investigation of the microstructure of the fine-grained YPO4_4:Gd ceramics with xenotime structure after Xe irradiation

The paper reports on the preparation of xenotime-structured ceramics by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) method. Phosphates Y0.95_{0.95}Gd0.05_{0.05}PO4_4 (YPO4_4:Gd) were obtained by the sol-gel method. The synthesized nanopowders are collected in large agglomerates 10-50 mkm in size. Ceramics has a fine-grained microstructure and a high relative density (98.67%). The total time of the SPS process was approximately 18 min. High-density sintered ceramics YPO4_4:Gd with a xenotime structure were irradiated with Xe+26^{+26} ions (E = 167 MeV) to fluences of 1×10121\times10^{12}-3×10133\times 10^{13} cm2^{-2}. Complete amorphization at maximum fluence was not achieved. As the fluence increases, an insignificant increase in the depth of the amorphous layer is observed. According to the results of grazing incidence XRD (GIXRD), with an increase in fluence from 1×10121\times10^{12}-3×10133\times 10^{13} cm2^{-2}, an increase in the volume fraction of the amorphous structure from 20 to 70% is observed. The intensity of XRD peak 200 YPO4_4:Gd after recovery annealing (700^\circC, 18 h) reached a value of ~80% of the initial intensity I0.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
