Richard Hollinshead was invited by the National Trust to develop a high-profile temporary artwork for Souter Lighthouse, South Shields. In response to this opportunity he developed an Artists’ Brief and curated a proposal by artists Lise Autogena and Joshua Portway. Their proposal Foghorn Requiem became a major site-specific project, and on June 22nd 2013 more than 50 ships gathered on the North Sea to perform an ambitious musical score by composer Orlando Gough, marking the disappearance of the sound of the foghorn from the UK’s coastal landscape. Specially tuned shipshorns and air supply systems installed on those vessels were accompanied by the Foghorn at Souter and three Championship-level brass bands, and Foghorn Requiem was performed to an audience of 8000

Cosmic acceleration in non-flat f(T)f(T) cosmology

We study f(T)f(T) cosmological models inserting a non-vanishing spatial curvature and discuss its consequences on cosmological dynamics. To figure this out, a polynomial f(T)f(T) model and a double torsion model are considered. We first analyze those models with cosmic data, employing the recent surveys of Union 2.1, baryonic acoustic oscillation and cosmic microwave background measurements. We then emphasize that the two popular f(T)f(T) models enable the crossing of the phantom divide line due to dark torsion. Afterwards, we compute numerical bounds up to 3-σ\sigma confidence level, emphasizing the fact that Ωk0\Omega_{k0} turns out to be non-compatible with zero at least at 1σ\sigma. Moreover, we underline that, even increasing the accuracy, one cannot remove the degeneracy between our models and the Λ\LambdaCDM paradigm. So that, we show that our treatments contain the concordance paradigm and we analyze the equation of state behaviors at different redshift domains. We also take into account gamma ray bursts and we describe the evolution of both the f(T)f(T) models with high redshift data. We calibrate the gamma ray burst measurements through small redshift surveys of data and we thus compare the main differences between non-flat and flat f(T)f(T) cosmology at different redshift ranges. We finally match the corresponding outcomes with small redshift bounds provided by cosmography. To do so, we analyze the deceleration parameters and their variations, proportional to the jerk term. Even though the two models well fit late-time data, we notice that the polynomial f(T)f(T) approach provides an effective de-Sitter phase, whereas the second f(T)f(T) framework shows analogous results compared with the Λ\LambdaCDM predictions.Comment: Accepted for publication in GR

The Role Of Organizational Justice And Ethical Frameworks On Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action: The Moderating Role Of Organizational Support

    Get PDF
The current study explores some of the challenges associated with Affirmative Action (AA) by clarifying the relationship between individuals’ ethical frameworks and equality justice norms and their effects on attitudes toward AA specifically targeting African Americans.  The study reveals that employer support for affirmative action plans and programs not only reduce negative attitudes toward AA but also moderate the effects of ethical frameworks and equality values on such attitudes. More specifically, consequentialist ethical values relate negatively and nonconsequentialist ethical values relate positively to attitudes toward affirmative action.  Additionally, organizational support positively moderates the relationship between both equality norms and consequentialist ethical values and attitudes toward affirmative action for African Americans. Implications for future research and practice are offered

Analysis of climate types: Main strategies for sustainable decisions in agricultural areas of Carabobo, Venezuela

    Get PDF
Recently, the agricultural zones of Carabobo present problems with the water available for crops influenced by the fluctuation between Precipitation and Potential Evapotranspiration. It is for this reason that the need arises to analyze the climatic types according to the degree of humidity. The Climatic Hydrological Balance methodology was used for 25 rainfall stations in Carabobo, Venezuela, for a period of common registration (1969 - 1999). The results show that four regions were found where humidity behaves differently, the greatest excesses are to the south of the state and it was found that the climatological stations located north of Carabobo have a greater annual deficit. The most relevant agricultural areas are represented by a water index of (-2.16 to -18.96); which determines a dry sub-humid climate with annual rainfall ranging between 921 mm and 1063 mm. This study generated vital information in those agricultural areas that require additional irrigation or controls with structural drainage works that prevent certain crops sensitive to excess water from being damaged

The current graduation work was about re-enhancing the controlling electric system of the processes with programmed logics of the slaughtering line of the Municipal slaughter house Riobamba. The line is made up of six stages, each one has its own machinery called platform lifting crane, hoisting drum crane, skin remover crane, sternum electric cutting saw to cut the animal and remove entrails, carcass cutting electric saw used for cutting up and multistage pump for carass cleaning. Each stage is enable from the main controlling board connected to the triphasic distribution net of the slaughter house where the programable Logic control SIMATIC S7-1200 is installed and which is in charge of sending an activation signal to the different ports corresponding to each one of the machines. For each machine, the connection of a thermomagnetic relay and breaker was done, with this,it is assured the protection of them against overcurrent, overvoltage and overload. A local monitoring system was implemented through the Touch Panel SMATIC KTP 400 installed in the contolling board and a remote monitoring system developed by Labview situated at the controlling office, both show the operative state of each machine. With the system enhanced, the percentage of used Devices improved to 100% and the percentage of improvement of the new Devices installed raised 20%;having a total improvement of the system of 60%. The enhanced system allows speeding up the Process, making them technically faster, cleaner and suitable with the increasing technological demands of the current and future customers. It is recommended that the operator checks the operative manual before the equipment is used, so that damage in the system is prevented
