    Assessing Cropland Abandonment from Violent Conflict in Central Mali with SENTINEL-2 and Google Earth Engine

    Abstract. The proposed analysis based on Sentinel-2 imagery provides evidence of impacts of the conflict in the Mopti region (central Mali), which has led to widescale cropland abandonment. This area is characterized by rapidly rising levels of violence since 2018, due to the presence of armed groups and the proliferation of self-defence militias. This study investigates how high-resolution optical imagery can help evaluate the linkages between violence and land cover / land use (LCLU) change. The processing environment of Google Earth Engine was used to generate the so-called 3-Period TimeScan (3PTS) product, a RGB composite combining the maximum NDVI values in the beginning, in the middle and in the end of the growing season, used to single out cultivated land for each year of interest. Theoretically, the period between June 15th and October 15th covers an annual agricultural cycle for the considered area; consequently, images acquired during that period were used to generate the 3PTS composites for the year of interest (2019) and for pre-conflict years. By comparing the situations before and after the start of the crisis, each populated site was categorized according to the degree of cropland change detected in its surroundings. The resulting overview map enables a regional-scale interpretation of farming activities in 2019, clearly highlighting localized areas of cropland abandonment in the region and showing a strong spatial correlation with incidence of conflict

    Electrical switching in a magnetically intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide.

    Advances in controlling the correlated behaviour of transition metal dichalcogenides have opened a new frontier of many-body physics in two dimensions. A field where these materials have yet to make a deep impact is antiferromagnetic spintronics-a relatively new research direction promising technologies with fast switching times, insensitivity to magnetic perturbations and reduced cross-talk1-3. Here, we present measurements on the intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide Fe1/3NbS2 that exhibits antiferromagnetic ordering below 42 K (refs. 4,5). We find that remarkably low current densities of the order of 104 A cm-2 can reorient the magnetic order, which can be detected through changes in the sample resistance, demonstrating its use as an electronically accessible antiferromagnetic switch. Fe1/3NbS2 is part of a larger family of magnetically intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides, some of which may exhibit switching at room temperature, forming a platform from which to build tuneable antiferromagnetic spintronic devices6,7

    Observation of ferromagnetic resonance in strontium ruthenate (SrRuO3)

    We report the observation of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in SrRuO3 using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The FMR oscillations in the time-domain appear in response to a sudden, optically induced change in the direction of easy-axis anistropy. The high FMR frequency, 250 GHz, and large Gilbert damping parameter, alpha ~ 1, are consistent with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that the parameters associated with the magnetization dynamics, including alpha, have a non-monotonic temperature dependence, suggestive of a link to the anomalous Hall effect.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Cooperating Agents for 3D Scientific Data Interpretation

    Many organizations collect vast quantities of three-dimensional (3-D) scientific data in volumetric form for a range of purposes, including resource exploration, market forecasting, and process modelling. Traditionally, these data have been interpreted by human experts with only minimal software assistance. However, such manual interpretation is a painstakingly slow and tedious process. Moreover, since interpretation involves subjective judgements and each interpreter has different scientific knowledge and experience, formulation of an effective interpretation often requires the cooperation of numerous such experts. Hence, there is a pressing need for a software system in which individual interpretations can be generated automatically and then refined through the use of cooperative reasoning and information sharing. To this end, a prototype system, SurfaceMapper, has been developed in which a community of cooperating software agents automatically locate and display interpretations in a volume of 3-D scientific data. The challenges and experiences in designing and building such a system are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the agents' interactions and an empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of different cooperation strategies is presented

    Determination of the spin-flip time in ferromagnetic SrRuO3 from time-resolved Kerr measurements

    We report time-resolved Kerr effect measurements of magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic SrRuO3. We observe that the demagnetization time slows substantially at temperatures within 15K of the Curie temperature, which is ~ 150K. We analyze the data with a phenomenological model that relates the demagnetization time to the spin flip time. In agreement with our observations the model yields a demagnetization time that is inversely proportional to T-Tc. We also make a direct comparison of the spin flip rate and the Gilbert damping coefficient showing that their ratio very close to kBTc, indicating a common origin for these phenomena
