    A series of variably proportioned iron/calcium smectite clays and iron loaded smectite clays containing iron up to the level found in the Martian soil were prepared from a typical montomorillonite clay using the Banin method. Evidence was obtained which supports the premise that these materials provide a unique and appropriate model soil system for the Martian surface in that they are consistent with the constraints imposed by the Viking surface elemental analysis, the reflectance data obtained by various spacecraft instruments and ground based telescopes, and the chemical reactivity measured by one of the Viking biology experiments, the Labeled Release (LR) experiment

    Mixtures of a Hawaiian palagonite and an iron-rich, montmorillonite clay (15.8 +/- 0.4 wt% Fe as Fe2O3) were evaluated as Mars surface spectral analogs from their diffuse reflectance spectra. The presence of the 2.2 microns absorption band in the reflectance spectrum of clays and its absence in the Mars spectrum have been interpreted as indicating that highly crystalline aluminous hydroxylated clays cannot be a major mineral component of the soil on Mars. The palagonite sample used in this study does not show this absorption feature in its spectrum. In mixtures of palagonite and iron-rich montmorillonite, the 2.2 microns Al-OH clay lattice band is not seen below 15 wt% montmorillonite. This suggests the possibility that iron-rich montmorillonite clay may be present in the soil of Mars at up to 15 wt% in combination with palagonite, and remain undetected in remotely sensed spectra of Mars

    A DTA/GC for the in Situ Identification of the Martian Surface Material

    The composition and mineralogy of the Martian surface material remain largely unknown. To determine its composition and mineralogy, several techniques are being considered for in situ analyses of the Martian surface material during missions to Mars. We have successfully developed, constructed, and tested a laboratory DTA/GC. The DTA is a Dupont model 1600 high temperature DTA coupled with a GC equipped with a MID detector. The system is operated by a Sun Sparc 11 workstation. When gas evolves during a thermal chemical event, it is shunted into the GC and the temperature is recorded in association with the specific thermal event. We have used this laboratory instrument to define experimental criteria necessary for determining the composition and mineralogy of the Martian surface in situ (e.g., heating of sample to 1100 C to distinguish clays). Our studies indicate that DTA/GC will provide a broad spectrum of mineralogical and evolved gas data pertinent to exobiology, geochemistry, and geology

    Use of near infrared correlation spectroscopy for quantitation of surface iron, absorbed water and stored electronic energy in a suite of Mars soil analog materials

    A number of questions concerning the surface mineralogy and the history of water on Mars remain unresolved using the Viking analyses and Earth-based telescopic data. Identification and quantitation of iron-bearing clays on Mars would elucidate these outstanding issues. Near infrared correlation analysis, a method typically applied to qualitative and quantitative analysis of individual constituents of multicomponent mixtures, is adapted here to selection of distinctive features of a small, highly homologous series of Fe/Ca-exchanged montmorillonites and several kalinites. Independently determined measures of surface iron, relative humidity and stored electronic energy were used as constituent data for linear regression of the constituent vs. reflectance data throughout the spectral region 0.68 to 2.5 micrometers. High correlations were found in appropriate regions for all three constituents, though that with stored energy is still considered tenuous. Quantitation was improved using 1st and 2nd derivative spectra. High resolution data over a broad spectral range would be required to quantitatively identify iron-bearing clays by remotely sensed reflectance

    Thermal emission measurements (5-25 microns) of palagonite/Fe-substituted montmorillonite intimate mixtures: Applications to Mars

    The emissivity of a Mauna Kea palagonitic soil mixed with an Fe-substituted montmorillonite (FeM) was measured. The emission spectra of all samples were measured at the TES spectroscopy laboratory at Arizona State University. The data were converted to emissivity using blackbody measurements combined with measurements of each sample at different temperatures. This preliminary study has demonstrated that both naturally-occurring palagonites, thought to be good visible to near-IR spectral analogs for Mars, and FeM exhibit complex emissivity spectra at thermal wavelengths. FeM exhibits greater emissivity variations than palagonite, and emissivity peaks observed in the FeM spectrum allows its identification for abundances greater than or equal to 15 percent when mixed with palagonite. Smaller abundances of FeM are potentially identifiable when mixed with palagonite, but this remains to be determined

    Derivation of Midinfrared (5-25 micrometers) Optical Constants of Some Silicates and Palagonite

    The midinfrared 2000-400/ cm (5-25 microns) optical constants (real (n) and imaginary (k) indices of refraction) are presented for: (1) pyrophyllite; (2) kaolinite; (3) serpentine; (4) montmorillonite; (5) saponite; (6) palagonite; and (7) orthopyroxene. Comparison of the values derived here with those previously presented for serpentine, montmorillonite, and palagonite is generally quite good and discrepancies between values are probably due to either chemical differences between the actual samples or different techniques used to derive the values. For montmorillonite, saponite, and palagonite we were able to derive optical constants in the region of the H2O-bending fundamental near 6 microns. We find that if a pellet of pure material can be produced with a mirror-like surface then the optical constants of clays and other noncohesive materials can be readily derived

    Inhibition of a Langerhans Cell-Mediated Immune Response by Treatment Modalities Useful in Psoriasis

    Neither the pathogenesis of psoriasis nor the mechanism whereby seemingly diverse therapies alter the disease is understood. In this study, several antipsoriatic agents were tested for their effects on the skin cell lymphocyte reaction (SLR), an immunologic assay in which HLA-DR antigens on Langerhans cells (LC) stimulate proliferation of allogeneic lymphocytes. Every agent tested (cortisol, methotrexate, hyperthermia, anthralin) inhibited the SLR at therapeutic dose levels. By contrast, a variety of antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory agent, and lithium carbonate and propranolol, two drugs known to be ineffective in psoriasis, failed to inhibit the SLR. Finally, we have shown that hyperthermia and anthralin treatments are toxic for LC whereas they have little or no effect on keratinocyte viability. These results suggest that antipsoriatic agents may act in psoriasis by alteration or killing of LC

    CT-guided intratumoural administration of cisplatin/epinephrine gel for treatment of malignant liver tumours

    To analyze prospectively the interventional and clinical aspects of computed tomography-guided direct intratumoural injection of a novel chemotherapeutic administration and the parenchymal changes of tumour and necrosis in malignant liver tumours. Eight patients with 17 colorectal liver metastases were treated with a mean of 5.1 injections and nine patients with 13 hepatocellular carcinoma nodules with a mean of 3.1 treatments with computed tomography guided local applications of a novel cisplatin/epinephrine gel. This application provides a higher local and lower systemic drug concentration. Volumes of tumour and necrosis prior and after treatment were measured by computer generated volumetric analysis. Contrast enhanced studies verified pretherapeutic viable tumour volumes with a value of 77.4 ml in the metastases and 29.2 ml in the hepatocellular carcinoma nodules. Intratumoural drug application resulted in a significant increase of necrosis and a decrease in viable tumour volume to be 68.3 ml in metastases and 14.5 ml in hepatocellular carcinoma. Local therapy control rate for the follow up to 6 months was 38 and 71% for the group of metastases and hepatocellular carcinoma, respectively. Direct intratumoural injection of cisplatin/epinepthrine injectable gel is a feasible and good tolerated method and results in the development of a statistically significant increase in necrosis in malignant liver tumours. For hepatocellular carcinoma a higher local therapy control rate compared to colorectal metastases can be reported
