Histories of hating
This roundtable discussion presents a dialogue between digital culture scholars on the seemingly increased presence of hating and hate speech online. Revolving primarily around the recent #GamerGate campaign of intensely misogynistic discourse aimed at women in video games, the discussion suggests that the current moment for hate online needs to be situated historically. From the perspective of intersecting cultural histories of hate speech, discrimination, and networked communication, we interrogate the ontological specificity of online hating before going on to explore potential responses to the harmful consequences of hateful speech. Finally, a research agenda for furthering the historical understandings of contemporary online hating is suggested in order to address the urgent need for scholarly interventions into the exclusionary cultures of networked media
Complex transitions to synchronization in delay-coupled networks of logistic maps
A network of delay-coupled logistic maps exhibits two different
synchronization regimes, depending on the distribution of the coupling delay
times. When the delays are homogeneous throughout the network, the network
synchronizes to a time-dependent state [Atay et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92,
144101 (2004)], which may be periodic or chaotic depending on the delay; when
the delays are sufficiently heterogeneous, the synchronization proceeds to a
steady-state, which is unstable for the uncoupled map [Masoller and Marti,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 134102 (2005)]. Here we characterize the transition from
time-dependent to steady-state synchronization as the width of the delay
distribution increases. We also compare the two transitions to synchronization
as the coupling strength increases. We use transition probabilities calculated
via symbolic analysis and ordinal patterns. We find that, as the coupling
strength increases, before the onset of steady-state synchronization the
network splits into two clusters which are in anti-phase relation with each
other. On the other hand, with increasing delay heterogeneity, no cluster
formation is seen at the onset of steady-state synchronization; however, a
rather complex unsynchronized state is detected, revealed by a diversity of
transition probabilities in the network nodes
Racism, anti-racist practice and social work: articulating the teaching and learning experiences of Black social workers
In the mid 1990s a Black practice teacher programme was established in Manchester and Merseyside with the primary aim to increase the number of Black practice teachers in social work organisations, and in turn provide a supportive and encouraging learning environment for Black student social workers whilst on placement. In the northâwest of England research has been undertaken, to establish the quality of the practice teaching and student learning taking place with Black practice teachers and students. This paper is an exploration of the ideas generated within the placement process that particularly focused on the discourse of racism and antâracist practice. Black students and practice teachers explain their understanding of racism and antiâracist practice within social work. From the research, the paper will critique some of the ideas concerning antiâracism. In particular, it will question whether antiâracist social work practice needs to be reâevaluated in the light of a context with new migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. It will concluded, by arguing that whilst the terms antiâracism, Black and Minority Ethnic have resonance as a form of political strategic essentialism, it is important to develop more positive representations in the future
Measurement and comparison of individual external doses of high-school students living in Japan, France, Poland and Belarus -- the "D-shuttle" project --
Twelve high schools in Japan (of which six are in Fukushima Prefecture), four
in France, eight in Poland and two in Belarus cooperated in the measurement and
comparison of individual external doses in 2014. In total 216 high-school
students and teachers participated in the study. Each participant wore an
electronic personal dosimeter "D-shuttle" for two weeks, and kept a journal of
his/her whereabouts and activities. The distributions of annual external doses
estimated for each region overlap with each other, demonstrating that the
personal external individual doses in locations where residence is currently
allowed in Fukushima Prefecture and in Belarus are well within the range of
estimated annual doses due to the background radiation level of other
regions/countries
Conceiving âpersonalityâ: Psychologistâs challenges and basic fundamentals of the Transdisciplinary Philosophy-of-Science Paradigm for Research on Individuals
Scientists exploring individuals, as such scientists are individuals themselves and thus not independent from their objects of research, encounter profound challenges; in particular, high risks for anthropo-, ethno- and ego-centric biases and various fallacies in reasoning. The Transdisciplinary Philosophy-of-Science Paradigm for Research on Individuals (TPS-Paradigm) aims to tackle these challenges by exploring and making explicit the philosophical presuppositions that are being made and the metatheories and methodologies that are used in the field. This article introduces basic fundamentals of the TPS-Paradigm including the epistemological principle of complementarity and metatheoretical concepts for exploring individuals as living organisms. Centrally, the TPS-Paradigm considers three metatheoretical properties (spatial location in relation to individualsâ bodies, temporal extension, and physicality versus ânon-physicalityâ) that can be conceived in different forms for various kinds of phenomena explored in individuals (morphology, physiology, behaviour, the psyche, semiotic representations, artificially modified outer appearances and contexts). These properties, as they determine the phenomenaâs accessibility in everyday life and research, are used to elaborate philosophy-of-science foundations and to derive general methodological implications for the elementary problem of phenomenon-methodology matching and for scientific quantification of the various kinds of phenomena studied. On the basis of these foundations, the article explores the metatheories and methodologies that are used or needed to empirically study each given kind of phenomenon in individuals in general. Building on these general implications, the article derives special implications for exploring individualsâ âpersonalityâ, which the TPS-Paradigm conceives of as individual-specificity in all of the various kinds of phenomena studied in individuals
Developing "personality" taxonomies: Metatheoretical and methodological rationales underlying selection approaches, methods of data generation and reduction principles
Taxonomic "personality" models are widely used in research and applied fields. This article applies the Transdisciplinary Philosophy-of-Science Paradigm for Research on Individuals (TPS-Paradigm) to scrutinise the three methodological steps that are required for developing comprehensive âpersonalityâ taxonomies: 1) the approaches used to select the phenomena and events to be studied, 2) the methods used to generate data about the selected phenomena and events and 3) the reduction principles used to extract the âmost importantâ individual-specific variations for constructing âpersonalityâ taxonomies. Analyses of some currently popular taxonomies reveal frequent mismatches between the researchersâ explicit and implicit metatheories about âpersonalityâ and the abilities of previous methodologies to capture the particular kinds of phenomena toward which they are targeted. Serious deficiencies that preclude scientific quantifications are identified in standardised questionnaires, psychologyâs established standard method of investigation. These mismatches and deficiencies derive from the lack of an explicit formulation and critical reflection on the philosophical and metatheoretical assumptions being made by scientists and from the established practice of radically matching the methodological tools to researchersâ preconceived ideas and to pre-existing statistical theories rather than to the particular phenomena and individuals under study. These findings raise serious doubts about the ability of previous taxonomies to appropriately and comprehensively reflect the phenomena towards which they are targeted and the structures of individual-specificity occurring in them. The article elaborates and illustrates with empirical examples methodological principles that allow researchers to appropriately meet the metatheoretical requirements and that are suitable for comprehensively exploring individualsâ âpersonalityâ
Broker Fixed: The Racialized Social Structure and the Subjugation of Indigenous Populations in the Andes
Responding to calls to return racial analysis to indigenous Latin America, this article moves beyond the prejudicial attitudes of dominant groups to specify how native subordination gets perpetuated as a normal outcome of the organization of society. I argue that a naturalized system of indirect rule racially subordinates native populations through creating the position of mestizo âauthoritarian intermediary.â Natives must depend on these cultural brokers for their personhood, while maintaining this privileged position requires facilitating indigenous exploitation. Institutional structures combine with cultural practices to generate a vicious cycle in which increased village intermediary success increases native marginalization. This racialized social structure explains my ethnographic findings that indigenous villagers continued to support the same coterie of mestizos despite their regular and sometimes extreme acts of peculation. My findings about the primacy of race suggest new directions for research into indigenous studies, ethnic mobilizations, and the global dimensions of racial domination
QuantCrit: education, policy, âBig Dataâ and principles for a critical race theory of statistics
Quantitative research enjoys heightened esteem among policy-makers, media and the general public. Whereas qualitative research is frequently dismissed as subjective and impressionistic, statistics are often assumed to be objective and factual. We argue that these distinctions are wholly false; quantitative data is no less socially constructed than any other form of research material. The first part of the paper presents a conceptual critique of the field with empirical examples that expose and challenge hidden assumptions that frequently encode racist perspectives beneath the façade of supposed quantitative objectivity. The second part of the paper draws on the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT) to set out some principles to guide the future use and analysis of quantitative data. These âQuantCritâ ideas concern (1) the centrality of racism as a complex and deeply-rooted aspect of society that is not readily amenable to quantification; (2) numbers are not neutral and should be interrogated for their role in promoting deficit analyses that serve White racial interests; (3) categories are neither ânaturalâ nor given and so the units and forms of analysis must be critically evaluated; (4) voice and insight are vital: data cannot âspeak for itselfâ and critical analyses should be informed by the experiential knowledge of marginalized groups; (5) statistical analyses have no inherent value but can play a role in struggles for social justice
