The conducive level of learning and living environment of off-campus students: case study UiTM Shah Alam / Prof. Dr. Dasimah Omar … [et al.]

    Get PDF
The impact of near-campus students housing, or off-campus students accommodation cannot be ignored by the universities and as well as the community officials. Numerous scholarly studies have highlighted the substantial economic impacts either direct, indirect or induced, and cumulatively the roles of the universities have significantly contributed to the local economies. The issue of the impacts of off-campus student rental housing on neighbourhoods is one that has been of longstanding but increasing concern in Malaysia Statistically, in Malaysia, there was approximately a total of 1.2 - 1.5 million students in 2009. By the year 2015, it is expected that 50 per cent of 18 to 30 year old active population should gain access to university education, amounting to 120,000 yearly. The objectives of the research are to obtain information on the living and learning conditions of off-campus students prevalent in the tertiary institutions in Malaysia and to isolate those factors that may impede the successful learning so that priority can be given to them in subsequent policy implementations and actions by government and the higher education institutions The research will establish a deliberated review on the capability to interact (social empowerment); the accessibility to local institutional and structural context (social inclusion); the resources that facilitate interaction (socio-economic security); and the necessary collective accepted values and norms, such as trust, that enable community building (social cohesion)

Sustainable practices require a controlled setting within an urban system where the practicality and efficacy could be assessed. An inversed Leontief matrix is derived from the economic input output table. The outcome of the model is expressed in global warming potential which describes its total global warming impact relative to carbon dioxide over a set period of time. The estimation of carbon footprint from monetary fluxes within an urban setting is vital in the environmental health impact assessment where sustainable urban planning and sustainable economy are complimentary of each other.Eje 1: Dilemas del desarrollo socio-territorial y la planificación urbano-regional frente a los retos de la sustentabilidad.Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanism

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) auditing was carried out at a sanitary landfill in Kuala Langat, Selangor, Malaysia. It was conducted to assess the environmental and health impact of the landfill. The study also includes an environmental risk index and life cycle analysis (LCA) approach to evaluate the facility. The auditing arrives with a conclusion that this facility might pose a hazard to the environment and health if no adequate control measures are taken consistently. Environmental auditing and LCA simulation could become an essential tool in the monitoring of urban planning and development

The walkability approach is essential to ensure the connectivity among space in the urban area. The design should be appropriate, safety, maximize and capable of reaching every inch of the spaces, just by walking. Good connectivity must allow people to walk freely and accessible in many ways. People have great chances to meet each other or having potential outdoor activities without any challenges. This study aims to measure the user perception of the existing spaces in the urban public housing environment that been covered and uncovered with the walkability linkages. The objectives of this study are to identify the existing pedestrian linkages in the study area; to investigate the user perception of the existing walkability system in the study area, and finally to conclude and provide a better solution for better walkability opportunity among residents to access the public park.© 2016. Youth in Public Housing: Place attachment and Quality of Life Index

    Get PDF
This study examines the quality of life (QoL) satisfaction through place attachment theory upon neighbourhood area among youth in Kuala Lumpur. The objectives are to test the impact of neighbourhood sense of place on QoL index. For place attachment, the environmental factors closest to the home of the residents exerted a greater influence than the more distal factor. These findings contribute to understanding the relationship between place attachment theory and quality of life among youth. The discussion also considers personal dimensions of place belonging and identifying associations amongst them as ways to explore youth quality of life in the PPH.  Keywords: Quality of Life; Place Attachment Theory; Youth; Public HousingISSN: 2398-4287© 2017. Factors that affect the use of public library such as accessibility, availability, comfortability and the maintenance of it plays an important role in determining its usage among youth. The paper will look into four research areas of the urban and rural areas involving 800 respondents (youth) in Malaysia as the base of this study to see whether the public library is used by the youth to gain information apart of other resources available. Keywords:Public Library, Youth, Youth development.ISSN: 2398-4287© 2017.
