Transitions in Line Bitangency Submanifolds for a One-Parameter Family of Immersion Pairs

    Get PDF
Consider two immersed surfaces M and N. A pair of points (p,q) in M x N is called a line bitangency if there is a common tangent line between them. Furthermore, we define the line bitangency submanifold as the union of all such pairs of points in M x N. In this thesis we investigate the dynamics of the line bitangency submanifold in a one-parameter family of immersion pairs. We do so by translating one of the surfaces and studying the wide range of transitions the submanifold may undertake. We then characterize these transitions by the local geometry of each surface and provide examples of each transition

Exploring the policymaking process of school-based physical education: a Congressional perspective

    Get PDF
The purpose of this exploratory case study design was to investigate and analyze the policymaking process of physical education at the national level. The participants used to explore this phenomenon were senators and representatives from the 114th-115th Congress who sat on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (n = 21), and the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education (n = 14). Additional participants were national policymakers (n = 3), staffers (n = 6), and legislative liaisons (n = 2). Data was collected from semi-structured interviews (n = 8), policy artifacts (n = 87), and the researcher\u27s journal (n = 32). The data was analyzed using a conventional approach to qualitative content analysis. The results indicate that physical education is primarily a state and local issue; however, the federal government is responsible for providing equal access, funding, and educational opportunities. Underlying these policy decisions are several key factors: problems of NCLB, education as a civil right, ending federal control, and several others. Policy recommendations are made to state departments of education that require local school districts to report on state laws and regulations pertaining to physical education. Future research must focus on the legislative process used at the state and local levels to determine physical education initiatives in respective states and schools

A proposed study of supervised injection on Boston's "Recovery Road"

Supervised Injection Facilities (SIFs) for the medical supervision of illicit drug use exist in Europe, Canada, and Australia to reduce infectious disease transmission, overdose deaths, and other harms of drug use. They have been shown to reduce rates of needle sharing by 69% and local overdose mortality by 35% without increasing rates of drug use or related crime. In light of increasing rates of illicit opioid use and overdose death in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Medical Society recently endorsed opening a SIF in Boston. This thesis proposes a study of the Boston SIF with the hypothesis that higher SIF utilization will be associated with decreased incidence of fatal overdose, HIV seroconversion, and HCV seroconversion during the study period. I propose evaluating this hypothesis prospectively by following clients of the SIF at 6 month intervals and comparing the rates of overdose death and HIV or HCV seroconversion among frequent and infrequent clients of the SIF. Based on data reported from previous SIFs and projections of the population of people who inject drugs (PWID) in Boston, a study with this design should detect a significant difference in these three primary endpoints between people using the SIF frequently and those using it infrequently within five years. A positive finding would confirm the efficacy of SIFs in harm reduction and secondary prevention for Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), potentially leading to broader adoption in other hotspots of opioid use in the United States

Thanks to the TV comedy series M*A*S*l I, the US military presence in Korea is arguably the best known but least understood component of the United States\u27 strategic presence in Asia. In the wake of the American debacle in Vietnam juxtaposed with the economic and other successes of the United States\u27 South Korean protégé, it comes as no surprise to Americans that Washington wants to keep US forces steadfastly committed in Korea-a place where they fought and, after a fashion, won

Trace element and isotope studies in oxide/phosphate/silicate inclusions of iron meteorites

    Get PDF
Under the above grant research was funded in the following areas: 1. Pallasites: Rare earth element measurements in phosphates to determine if all pallasites fit into only two trace element groups. This work has been completed. 2. HIAB irons: To complete work on the only known silicate inclusion in a IIIAB iron meteorite. This work has been completed. 3. IIIAB irons: To continue the search for Cr-53 excesses in IIIAB iron meteorite phosphates. A part of this work has been completed 4. IIIAB irons: To complete the identification of the phosphate minerals in IIIAB iron meteorites and try to determine the phase relations and chemical history of trace element distributions during the core formation process. Work on this has been largely completed and preliminary results have been reported. The final work is being assessed prior to preparation of a manuscript for publication. 5. IIE irons: To complete work on the unique silicate assemblage in the IIE iron meteorite. Work on this was completed and a paper published. 6. Ungrouped irons: A partially devitrified silicate glass inclusion has been found in the ungrouped iron meteorite. Preliminary work on this has been reported. All the work on this has been now completed and a manuscript has been prepared and submitted for publication
