    Superfluidity and superconductivity are genuine many-body manifestations of quantum coherence. For finite-size systems the associated pairing gap fluctuates as a function of size or shape. We provide a parameter free theoretical description of pairing fluctuations in mesoscopic systems characterized by order/chaos dynamics. The theory accurately describes experimental observations of nuclear superfluidity (regular system), predicts universal fluctuations of superconductivity in small chaotic metallic grains, and provides a global analysis in ultracold Fermi gases.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Long-term exposure of mouse pancreatic islets to oleate or palmitate results in reduced glucose-induced somatostatin and oversecretion of glucagon

    AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Long-term exposure to NEFAs leads to inhibition of glucose-induced insulin secretion. We tested whether the release of somatostatin and glucagon, the two other major islet hormones, is also affected. METHODS: Mouse pancreatic islets were cultured for 72 h at 4.5 or 15 mmol/l glucose with or without 0.5 mmol/l oleate or palmitate. The release of glucagon and somatostatin during subsequent 1 h incubations at 1 or 20 mmol/l glucose as well as the islet content of the two hormones were determined. Lipid-induced changes in islet cell ultrastructure were assessed by electron microscopy. RESULTS: Culture at 15 mmol/l glucose increased islet glucagon content by approximately 50% relative to that observed following culture at 4.5 mmol/l glucose. Inclusion of oleate or palmitate reduced islet glucagon content by 25% (at 4.5 mmol/l glucose) to 50% (at 15 mmol/l glucose). Long-term exposure to the NEFA increased glucagon secretion at 1 mmol/l glucose by 50% (when islets had been cultured at 15 mmol/l glucose) to 100% (with 4.5 mmol/l glucose in the culture medium) and abolished the inhibitory effect of 20 mmol/l glucose on glucagon secretion. Somatostatin content was unaffected by glucose and lipids, but glucose-induced somatostatin secretion was reduced by approximately 50% following long-term exposure to either of the NEFA, regardless of whether the culture medium contained 4.5 or 15 mmol/l glucose. Ultrastructural evidence of lipid deposition was seen in <10% of non-beta cells but in >80% of the beta cells. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Long-term exposure to high glucose and/or NEFA affects the release of somatostatin and glucagon. The effects on glucagon secretion are very pronounced and in type 2 diabetes in vivo may aggravate the hyperglycaemic effects due to lack of insulin

    ISOCAM observations of the L1551 star formation region

    The results of a deep mid-IR ISOCAM survey of the L1551 dark molecular cloud are presented. The aim of this survey is a search for new YSO (Young Stellar Object) candidates, using two broad-band filters centred at 6.7 and 14.3 micron. Although two regions close to the centre of L1551 had to be avoided due to saturation problems, 96 sources were detected in total (76 sources at 6.7 micron and 44 sources at 14.3 micron). Using the 24 sources detected in both filters, 14 were found to have intrinsic mid-IR excess at 14.3 micron and were therefore classified as YSO candidates. Using additional observations in B, V, I, J, H and K obtained from the ground, most candidates detected at these wavelengths were confirmed to have mid-IR excess at 6.7 micron as well, and three additional YSO candidates were found. Prior to this survey only three YSOs were known in the observed region (avoiding L1551 IRS5/NE and HL/XZ Tau). This survey reveals 15 new YSO candidates, although several of these are uncertain due to their extended nature either in the mid-IR or in the optical/near-IR observations. Two of the sources with mid-IR excess are previously known YSOs, one is a brown dwarf MHO 5 and the other is the well known T Tauri star HH30, consisting of an outflow and an optically thick disk seen edge on.Comment: 14 Pages, 8 Figure

    HD101584: Circumstellar characteristics and evolutionary status

    We have performed a study of the characteristics of the circumstellar environment of the binary object HD101584, that provides information on a likely evolutionary scenario. We have obtained and analysed ALMA observations, complemented with observations using APEX, of a large number of molecular lines. An analysis of the spectral energy distribution has also been performed. Emissions from 12 molecular species (not counting isotopologues) have been observed, and most of them mapped with angular resolutions in the range 0.1" to 0.6". Four circumstellar components are identified: i) a central compact source of size 0.15", ii) an expanding equatorial density enhancement (a flattened density distribution in the plane of the orbit) of size 3", iii) a bipolar high-velocity outflow (150 km/s), and iv) an hourglass structure. The outflow is directed almost along the line of sight. There is evidence of a second bipolar outflow. The mass of the circumstellar gas is 0.5[D/1 kpc]^2 Msun, about half of it lies in the equatorial density enhancement. The dust mass is 0.01[D/1 kpc]^2 Msun, and a substantial fraction of this is in the form of large-sized, up to 1 mm, grains. The estimated kinetic age of the outflow is 770[D/1 kpc] yr. The kinetic energy and the scalar momentum of the accelerated gas are estimated to be 7x10^(45)[D/1 kpc]^2 erg and 10^(39)[D/1 kpc]^2 g cm/s, respectively. We provide good evidence that the binary system HD101584 is in a post-common-envelope-evolution phase, that ended before a stellar merger. Isotope ratios combined with stellar mass estimates suggest that the primary star's evolution was terminated already on the first red giant branch (RGB). Most of the energy required to drive the outflowing gas was probably released when material fell towards the companion.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    The Star Clusters in the Starburst Irregular Galaxy NGC 1569

    We examine star clusters in the irregular, starburst galaxy NGC 1569 from HST images. In addition to the two known super star clusters, we identify 45 other clusters that are compact but resolved. Integrated UVI colors of the clusters span a large range, and suggest that ages range from 3 Myrs to 1 Gyr. However, most of the clusters were formed at the tail end of the recent starburst. Numerous clusters in addition to the know super star clusters are similar in luminosity to a small globular cluster. We examined the radial surface brightness of four of the clusters. Their half-light radii and core radii are in the range observed in present-day globular clusters. Therefore, conditions that produced the recent starburst have also been those necessary for producing compact, bright star clusters. We examine resolved stars in the outer parts of the two super star clusters. Cluster A is dominated by bright blue stars with a small population of red supergiants. Sub-components A1 and A2 have similar colors and a two-dimensional color map does not offer evidence that one component is dominated by red supergiants and the other not. The contradiction of the presence of red super- giants with Wolf-Rayet stars may instead not be a contradiction at all since there coexistence in a coeval population is not inconsistent with the evolution of massive stars. Cluster B is dominated by red supergiants, and this is confirmed by the presence of the stellar CO absorption feature in an integrated spectrum. The various age indicators are consistent with a picture in which cluster B is of order 10--20 Myrs old, and cluster A is >4-5 Myrs old.Comment: To be published in AJ, November 200

    A Three Micron Survey of the Chamaeleon I Dark Cloud

    We describe an L-band photometric survey of 0.5 square deg of the Cha I dark cloud. The survey has a completeness limit of L < 11.0. Our survey detects 124 sources, including all known pre-main sequence stars with L < 11. The fraction of sources with near-IR excess emission is 58% +- 4% for K = 9-11. Cha I sources have bluer H-K and K-L colors than pre-main sequence stars in Taurus-Auriga. These sources also have a strong correlation between EW(H-alpha) and K-L. Stars with K-L 0.6 have strong H-alpha emission. Because many Cha I sources are heavily reddened, this division between weak emission T Tauri stars and classical T Tauri stars occurs at a redder K-L than in Taurus-Auriga.Comment: 12 pages of text, 4 figures, and 1 three page table of data modified version adds reference and acknowledgemen

    Systematic effects and a new determination of the primordial abundance of 4He and dY/dZ from observations of blue compact galaxies

    We use spectroscopic observations of a sample of 82 HII regions in 76 blue compact galaxies to determine the primordial helium abundance Yp and the slope dY/dZ from the Y-O/H linear regression. To improve the accuracy of the dY/dZ measurement, we have included new spectrophotometric observations of 33 HII regions which span a large metallicity range, with oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) varying between 7.43 and 8.30 (Zsun/30<Z<Zsun/4). For a subsample of 7 HII regions, we derive the He mass fraction taking into account known systematic effects, including collisional and fluorescent enhancements of HeI emission lines, collisional excitation of hydrogen emission, underlying stellar HeI absorption and the difference between the temperatures Te(HeII) in the He^+ zone and Te(OIII) derived from the collisionally excited [OIII] lines. We find that the net result of all the systematic effects combined is small, changing the He mass fraction by less than 0.6%. By extrapolating the Y vs. O/H linear regression to O/H=0 for 7 HII regions of this subsample, we obtain Yp=0.2421+/-0.0021 and dY/dO=5.7+/-1.8, which corresponds to dY/dZ=3.7+/-1.2, assuming the oxygen mass fraction to be O=0.66Z. In the framework of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis theory, this Yp corresponds to Omega_b h^2 = 0.012^+0.003_-0.002, where h is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/s/Mpc. This is smaller at the 2sigma level than the value obtained from recent deuterium abundance and microwave background radiation measurements. The linear regression slope dY/dO=4.3+/-0.7 (corresponding to dY/dZ=2.8+/-0.5) for the whole sample of 82 HII regions is similar to that derived for the subsample of 7 HII regions, although it has a considerably smaller uncertainty.Comment: 53 pages, 3 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    The detached dust shells of AQ And, U Ant, and TT Cyg

    Detached circumstellar dust shells are detected around three carbon variables using Herschel-PACS. Two of them are already known on the basis of their thermal CO emission and two are visible as extensions in IRAS imaging data. By model fits to the new data sets, physical sizes, expansion timescales, dust temperatures, and more are deduced. A comparison with existing molecular CO material shows a high degree of correlation for TT Cyg and U Ant but a few distinct differences with other observables are also found.Comment: Letter accepted for publication on the A&A Herschel Special Issu

    Galantamine Attenuates Type 1 Diabetes and Inhibits Anti-Insulin Antibodies in Non-Obese Diabetic Mice

    Type 1 diabetes in mice is characterized by autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Disease pathogenesis involves invasion of pancreatic islets by immune cells, including macrophages and T cells, and production of antibodies to self-antigens, including insulin. Activation of the inflammatory reflex, the neural circuit that inhibits inflammation, culminates on cholinergic receptor signals on immune cells to attenuate cytokine release and inhibit B cell antibody production. Here, we show that galantamine, a centrally acting acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and an activator of the inflammatory reflex, attenuates murine experimental type 1 diabetes. Administration of galantamine to animals immunized with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) significantly suppressed splenocyte release of immunoglobulin G (IgG), interleukin-4 and -6 (IL-4 and IL-6) during KLH-challenge ex vivo. Administration of galantamine beginning at one month of age in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice significantly delayed the onset of hyperglycemia, attenuated immune cell infiltration in pancreatic islets and decreased anti-insulin antibodies in serum. These observations indicate that galantamine attenuates experimental type 1 diabetes in mice and suggest that activation of the inflammatory reflex should be further studied as a potential therapeutic approach

    Resolving the shocked gas in HH54 with Herschel: CO line mapping at high spatial and spectral resolution

    The HH54 shock is a Herbig-Haro object, located in the nearby Chamaeleon II cloud. Observed CO line profiles are due to a complex distribution in density, temperature, velocity, and geometry. Resolving the HH54 shock wave in the far-infrared cooling lines of CO constrain the kinematics, morphology, and physical conditions of the shocked region. We used the PACS and SPIRE instruments on board the Herschel space observatory to map the full FIR spectrum in a region covering the HH54 shock wave. Complementary Herschel-HIFI, APEX, and Spitzer data are used in the analysis as well. The observed features in the line profiles are reproduced using a 3D radiative transfer model of a bow-shock, constructed with the Line Modeling Engine code (LIME). The FIR emission is confined to the HH54 region and a coherent displacement of the location of the emission maximum of CO with increasing J is observed. The peak positions of the high-J CO lines are shifted upstream from the lower J CO lines and coincide with the position of the spectral feature identified previously in CO(10-9) profiles with HIFI. This indicates a hotter molecular component in the upstream gas with distinct dynamics. The coherent displacement with increasing J for CO is consistent with a scenario where IRAS12500-7658 is the exciting source of the flow, and the 180 K bow-shock is accompanied by a hot (800 K) molecular component located upstream from the apex of the shock and blueshifted by -7 km s1^{-1}. The spatial proximity of this knot to the peaks of the atomic fine-structure emission lines observed with Spitzer and PACS ([OI]63, 145 μ\mum) suggests that it may be associated with the dissociative shock as the jet impacts slower moving gas in the HH54 bow-shock.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
