    Strategy as Learning: Capturing Emerging Knowledge

    The process of strategy making presents a multi-faceted debate, with the ‘Learning School’ of strategic management being one of the main approaches to conceptualise strategy formation. This approach suggests that strategy making is a process of emergent learning over time, where strategy makers critically reflect on past experience, experiment in new competitive conditions and adapt their strategies accordingly. The premises of the Learning School are similar to the premises of action learning, and yet, the action learning paradigm appears to have made little or no impact in strategic management literature and practice. This paper proposes that implementing an action learning methodology into the process of strategy making could make an important contribution to strategy makers by capturing, harnessing and developing organizational learning and knowledge

    Constructing Reference Metrics on Multicube Representations of Arbitrary Manifolds

    Reference metrics are used to define the differential structure on multicube representations of manifolds, i.e., they provide a simple and practical way to define what it means globally for tensor fields and their derivatives to be continuous. This paper introduces a general procedure for constructing reference metrics automatically on multicube representations of manifolds with arbitrary topologies. The method is tested here by constructing reference metrics for compact, orientable two-dimensional manifolds with genera between zero and five. These metrics are shown to satisfy the Gauss-Bonnet identity numerically to the level of truncation error (which converges toward zero as the numerical resolution is increased). These reference metrics can be made smoother and more uniform by evolving them with Ricci flow. This smoothing procedure is tested on the two-dimensional reference metrics constructed here. These smoothing evolutions (using volume-normalized Ricci flow with DeTurck gauge fixing) are all shown to produce reference metrics with constant scalar curvatures (at the level of numerical truncation error).Comment: 37 pages, 16 figures; additional introductory material added in version accepted for publicatio

    It’s not the model that doesn’t fit, it’s the controller! The role of cognitive skills in understanding the links between natural mapping, performance, and enjoyment of console video games

    This study examines differences in performance, frustration, and game ratings of individuals playing first person shooter video games using two different controllers (motion controller and a traditional, pushbutton controller) in a within-subjects, randomized order design. Structural equation modeling was used to demonstrate that cognitive skills such as mental rotation ability and eye/hand coordination predicted performance for both controllers, but the motion control was significantly more frustrating. Moreover, increased performance was only related to game ratings for the traditional controller input. We interpret these data as evidence that, contrary to the assumption that motion controlled interfaces are more naturally mapped than traditional push-button controllers, the traditional controller was more naturally mapped as an interface for gameplay

    Improving bankruptcy prediction in micro-entities by using nonlinear effects and non-financial variables

    The use of non-parametric methodologies, the introduction of non-financial variables, and the development of models geared towards the homogeneous characteristics of corporate sub-populations have recently experienced a surge of interest in the bankruptcy literature. However, no research on default prediction has yet focused on micro-entities (MEs), despite such firms’ importance in the global economy. This paper builds the first bankruptcy model especially designed for MEs by using a wide set of accounts from 1999 to 2008 and applying artificial neural networks (ANNs). Our findings show that ANNs outperform the traditional logistic regression (LR) models. In addition, we also report that, thanks to the introduction of non-financial predictors related to age, the delay in filing accounts, legal action by creditors to recover unpaid debts, and the ownership features of the company, the improvement with respect to the use of solely financial information is 3.6%, which is even higher than the improvement that involves the use of the best ANN (2.6%)

    The Evolution of Obstruction: Mike Mansfield and Multiple Tracks

    A core question in analyzing political institutions is how these institutions themselves change. This thesis seeks to understand how the institutional procedure change of multiple tracks affects the functioning of the filibuster in the U.S. Senate. The data utilized are Washington Post discussions of the filibuster before and after the implementation of multiple tracks. Descriptive statistics, analyses of mean differences, and OLS regression are utilized to test how this change altered the functioning of the filibuster in the Senate. Ultimately, this thesis finds that the implementation of multiple tracks does not affect the functioning of the filibuster, but does alter the duties of the majority leader within the chamber in relation to managing filibusters. This finding is linked to classical and contemporary examples of the filibuster to illustrate how the role of the majority leader changes in practice

    Fun Versus Meaningful Video Game Experiences: A Qualitative Analysis of User Responses

    Emerging research on video games has suggested that feelings of both enjoyment and meaningfulness can be elicited from gameplay. Studies have shown enjoyment and meaningfulness evaluations to be associated with discrete elements of video games (ratings of gameplay and narrative, respectively), but have relied on closed-end data analysis. The current study analyzed participants’ open-ended reviews of either their “most fun” or “most meaningful” video game experience (N = 575, randomly assigned to either condition). Results demonstrated that “fun” games were explained in terms of gameplay mechanics, and “meaningful” games were explained in terms of connections with players and in-game characters

    Resonant Characteristics of Rectangular Microcantilevers Vibrating Torsionally in Viscous Liquid Media

    The resonant characteristics of rectangular microcantilevers vibrating in the torsional mode in viscous liquid media are investigated. The hydrodynamic load (torque per unit length) on the vibrating beam due to the liquid was first determined using a finite element model. An analytical expression of the hydrodynamic function in terms of the Reynolds number and aspect ratio, h/b (with thickness, h, and width, b) was then obtained by fitting the numerical results. This allowed for the resonance frequency and quality factor to be investigated as functions of both beam geometry and medium properties. Moreover, the effects of the aspect ratio on the cross-section\u27s torsional constant, K, which affects the microcantilever\u27s torsional stiffness, and on its polar moment of inertia, Jp, which is associated with the beam\u27s rotational inertia, are also considered when obtaining the resonance frequency and quality factor. Compared with microcantilevers under out-of-plane (transverse) flexural vibration, the results show that microcantilevers that vibrate in their 1st torsional or 1st in-plane (lateral) flexural resonant modes have higher resonance frequency and quality factor. The increase in resonance frequency and quality factor results in higher mass sensitivity and reduced frequency noise, respectively. The improvement in the sensitivity and quality factor are expected to yield much lower limits of detection in liquid-phase chemical sensing applications
