    Are mimics monophyletic? The necessity of phylogenetic hypothesis tests in character evolution

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The processes governing the origin and maintenance of mimetic phenotypes can only be understood in a phylogenetic framework. Phylogenetic estimates of evolutionary relationships can provide a context for analyses of character evolution; however, when phylogenetic estimates conflict, rigorous analyses of alternative evolutionary histories are necessary to determine the likelihood of a specific history giving rise to the observed pattern of diversity. The polyphenic butterfly <it>Limenitis arthemis </it>provides a case in point. This species is comprised of three lineages, two of which are mimetic and one of which is non-mimetic. Conflicting estimates of the relationships among these three lineages requires direct evaluation of the alternative hypotheses of mimicry evolution.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using a coalescent framework, we found support for a sister-taxon relationship between the non-mimetic <it>L. a. arthemis </it>and the mimetic <it>L. a. astyanax</it>, congruent with the previous hypothesis that the non-mimetic form of <it>L. a. arthemis </it>was derived from a mimetic ancestor. We found no support for a mimetic clade (<it>L. a. astyanax </it>+ <it>L. a. arizonensis</it>) despite analyzing numerous models of population structure.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results provide the foundation for future studies of mimicry, which should integrate phylogenetic and developmental analyses of wing pattern formation. We propose future analyses of character evolution accommodate conflicting phylogenetic estimates by explicitly testing alternative evolutionary hypotheses.</p

    EPR and Structural Characterization of Water-Soluble Mn2+-Doped Si Nanoparticles.

    Water-soluble poly(allylamine) Mn2+-doped Si (SiMn) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared and show promise for biologically related applications. The nanoparticles show both strong photoluminescence and good magnetic resonance contrast imaging. The morphology and average diameter were obtained through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM); spherical crystalline Si NPs with an average diameter of 4.2 ± 0.7 nm were observed. The doping maximum obtained through this process was an average concentration of 0.4 ± 0.3% Mn per mole of Si. The water-soluble SiMn NPs showed a strong photoluminescence with a quantum yield up to 13%. The SiMn NPs had significant T1 contrast with an r1 relaxivity of 11.1 ± 1.5 mM-1 s-1 and r2 relaxivity of 32.7 ± 4.7 mM-1 s-1 where the concentration is in mM of Mn2+. Dextran-coated poly(allylamine) SiMn NPs produced NPs with T1 and T2 contrast with a r1 relaxivity of 27.1 ± 2.8 mM-1 s-1 and r2 relaxivity of 1078.5 ± 1.9 mM-1 s-1. X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectra are fit with a two-site model demonstrating that there are two types of Mn2+ in these NP's. The fits yield hyperfine splittings (A) of 265 and 238 MHz with significant zero field splitting (D and E terms). This is consistent with Mn in sites of symmetry lower than tetrahedral due to the small size of the NP's

    Axel: A Minimalist Tethered Rover for Exploration of Extreme Planetary Terrains

    Recent scientific findings suggest that some of the most interesting sites for future exploration of planetary surfaces lie in terrains that are currently inaccessible to conventional robotic rovers. To provide robust and flexible access to these terrains, we have been developing Axel, the robotic rover. Axel is a lightweight two-wheeled vehicle that can access steep terrains and negotiate relatively large obstacles because of its actively managed tether and novel wheel design. This article reviews the Axel system and focuses on those system components that affect Axel's steep terrain mobility. Experimental demonstrations of Axel on sloped and rocky terrains are presented

    Automated three-component synthesis of a library of γ-lactams

    A three-component method for the synthesis of γ-lactams from commercially available maleimides, aldehydes, and amines was adapted to parallel library synthesis. Improvements to the chemistry over previous efforts include the optimization of the method to a one-pot process, the management of by-products and excess reagents, the development of an automated parallel sequence, and the adaption of the method to permit the preparation of enantiomerically enriched products.     Effect of Short-Term Failure Versus Nonfailure Training on Lower Body Muscular Endurance

    This study compared failure versus nonfailure training with equated intensity and volume on lower body muscular endurance in trained men. Methods: Each subject performed one lower body workout per week for 6 weeks; the Failure group performed 3 sets of the squat, leg curl, and leg extension exercises to the point of voluntary exhaustion, while the Nonfailure group performed 4 sets for each of these exercises, but with a submaximal number of repetitions that did not allow failure to occur on any set. All subjects performed a pre- and postintervention muscular endurance test that involved 3 sets each for the squat, leg curl, and leg extension exercises. Blood lactate concentration (BL) was assessed before, and at 5 and 10 minutes following the test. Heart rate (HR) was assessed before the test, following the last set of each exercise, and for 10 minutes following the test. Results: Both groups demonstrated significant increases in total work (P \u3c .0001) for the postintervention test, with no significant differences between the groups (P = .882). When comparing the pre- and postintervention tests, BL and HR were not significantly different at any time point (P \u3e .05). Conclusions: These results indicate that when intensity and volume are equated, failure or nonfailure training results in similar gains in lower body muscular endurance. Therefore, when assessed over relatively short training cycles, the total volume of training might be more important versus whether sets are performed to failure for muscular endurance-related adaptations

    Synchrotron study of poly[[di-μ-aqua­(μ-2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dicarboxyl­ato)di­potassium] dihydrate]

    The title compound, {[K2(C12H6N2O4)(H2O)2]·2H2O}n, forms a three-dimensional coordination polymer in the solid state. The asymmetric unit consists of one K+ ion, half of a 2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dicarboxyl­ate ligand, one coordinated water mol­ecule and one solvent water mol­ecule. The K+ ion is 7-coordinated by the oxygen atoms of two water mol­ecules and by five oxygen atoms of four carboxyl­ate groups, one of which is chelating. The extended structure can be described as a binodal network in which each K+ is a six-connected node, bonding to four carboxyl­ate groups and two bridging water mol­ecules, and the 2,2′-bipyridyl-5,5′-dicarboxyl­ate linkers are eight-connected nodes, with each carboxyl­ate group bridging four metal centers. Overall, this arrangement generates a complex network with point symbol {34.412.512}{34.44.54.63}2. Both of the bridging water mol­ecules participate as donors in hydrogen-bonding inter­actions; one to solvent water mol­ecules and a second to an oxygen atom of a carboxyl­ate group
