trabalho. The present work is included in a funded project with the cooperation of the industry. The
main aim of the project was to develop technological aspects to built reinforced brick masonry
shells. The proposed solution represents also an attempt to innovate with respect to traditional
building techniques.
Reinforced masonry shells are structural systems often used in the past, mainly in Uruguay
and South America after the 1950’s, based on the work of engineer Eladio Dieste. These
structures are composed by ceramic bricks, reinforced mortar joints and a mortar top layer.
Such building technology allowed to obtain very large spans, with shells spanning up to 50 m.
In the present study a constructive system based on Eladio Dieste’s model has been
developed, focusing on the prefabrication industry,
The constituent materials of the proposed structural system were chosen by means of an
extensive experimental study, which was carried out in order to characterize their mechanical
behaviour.
In order to verify the interaction between the materials used in the system, adequate
specimens were tested. In these tests, the representative panels were subjected to different
types of loadings, in order to simulate possible effects originated by the actions applied to the
real structures.
The structural system that results from the project was composed by a layer of ceramic
bricks, reinforced concrete joints and a concrete cover layer.
To validate the proposed system, a full scale shell was built at the structural laboratory of
University of Minho. The shell was tested under monotonic vertical load applied to ¼ of its span,
distributed along the width.
The obtained results led to the conclusion that the system developed to build prefabricated
reinforced brick masonry shells is suitable for the proposed application. In this way, the study
fulfilled the established objectives of the project.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).Comissão Europeia - Projecto ISO-BRICK (CRAFT Research Project. Contract G5ST-CT-2001-50095)
The economics of urban planning: why land and labour markets matter
Masterplanning has resurfaced as an important planning tool in urban Africa in the last two decades. Given the rapid pace of urbanisation in lower-income countries more widely, planning ahead for the expansion of cities is crucial to ensure that residents are well-served with adequate public infrastructure and services. However, plans often do not account for the dynamics of land and labour markets, which have a fundamental impact on ever-changing urban form
Front-lining green jobs in the sustainable urbanisation agenda
The global transition to a carbon-neutral economy is expected to create many opportunities in the labour market, often referred to as ‘green’ jobs. In developing countries, active public policy at the national and local levels are needed for reskilling and upskilling workers into greener, higher-productivity occupations. This requires a better understanding of what green jobs are and how to quantify them
Three ways in which cities can spur development and climate change adaptation
Cities in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are among the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change due to their geographic features and low income per capita. Many of the challenges related to sustainable urbanisation in poor countries can be overcome by getting the city development model right, and by focusing on pursuing development and adaptation goals in tandem
Higher-order integrable interactions for bosons in a multi–well potential
In this work we introduce an integrable family of Hamiltonians describing ultracold bosons behavior disposed in an optical lattice. The models are very general, taking into account the single and double tunnelings of the particles in multi-well potentials, the intra and inter site interactions between them, and also considering the correlated hopping between sites. The models are derived through the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method, and admit exact solution by applying an extended algebraic Bethe Ansatz, in which a new set of pseudovacua are required to obtain a complete set of Bethe states. This new family of models is noteworthy due to its generality, being capable of describing not only interesting and new behaviors, but also important models such as the Two-Site Bose-Hubbard model and, more recently, a three-site atomtronic switching device [1] can be obtained as a limiting case.
Cooking effects on iron and proteins content of beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) by GF AAS and MALDI-TOF MS
The effects of domestic cooking on proteins, organic compounds and Fe distribution in beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were investigated. Sequential extraction with different extractant solutions (mixture of methanol and chloroform 1:2 v/v, water, 0.5 mol L-1 NaCl, 70% v/v ethanol and 0.5 mol L-1 NaOH) were used for extracting lipids, albumins, globulins, prolamins and glutelins, respectively. Iron determination by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF AAS), proteins by Bradford method and organic compounds by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) were carried out in this work. High concentration of albumins, globulins and glutelins were found in raw beans, while in the cooked beans, albumins and glutelins are main proteins types. The MALDI-TOF MS spectra of raw and cooked beans revealed that the domestic cooking altered the molecular weight of the organic compounds, since that in the cooked beans were found compounds between 2 and 3.5 kDa, which were not presented in the raw beans. Besides this, in cooked beans were also observed the presence of four compounds of high molecular weight (12-16 kDa), being that in the raw grains there is only one (ca. 15.2 kDa). In raw grains is possible to observe that Fe is mainly associated to albumins, globulins and glutelins. For cooked grains, Fe is associated to albumins and globulins.
