Career planning stimulates personal competence and coping with career and future. We analyse the simultaneous relationship between career planning and academic behaviour and performance. Participants were 446 students from the 5th year (231, 52.2% boys), aged nine to 13 years old (M = 10.23, SD = 0.49). A demographic questionnaire and the planning subscale of the Childhood Career Development Scale were used. Results evidenced two different career profiles: the constructive, with higher planning and positive outcomes in academic behaviour and performance; the vulnerable, with lower planning, behavioural problems, more learning difficulties, and school retention. The career adaptation model helps to explain the process of transitioning from university to employment among college students. This study tested the invariance of the model for gender and for Portuguese and Brazilian cultural contexts. Participants included 638 students (69% women, 66.1% Brazilian), aged 18 to 56 (M = 23.78, SD = 20.33). Individuals’ adaptability resources, adapting responses, and adaptation results were considered and assessed. Multigroup path analysis results indicated invariance of the model only for contexts, indicating that the adaptation process, in university to employment transition, is equivalent in Portugal and Brazil, guiding career interventions in both contexts.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Ecologia do Desenvolvimento Profissional das Crianças: Uma Revisão da Literatura

    Get PDF
Previous efforts to elaborate an organizing framework for the study of children’s career development identified its main dimensions and processes. However, the existing literature on children’s ecological subsystems is scarce. This article presents a literature review of the context of children’s career development. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s theory, 36 eligible articles covered the following subjects: the microsystems family and school; the mesosystems family-school/peer-school relations and antecedents of transitions; the exosystems parents’ work situation, social class, curriculum and teachers’ professional development; the macrosystems ethnicity and culture; and the chronosystems passage of time over the life-course and across generations. An ecological perspective can be included in an organizing framework of children’s careers and support further research and intervention. Empirical and practical implications are discussed.

The main goal of this research was to adapt and validate a scale of reading strategies assessment for the Portuguese population. The Reading Strategy Use (RSU) is a measure of cognitive and metacognitive strategies, consisting of 22 items. The sample was composed of 428 students. The factor structure of the scale was investigated by means of confirmatory factor analysis. The fit of two factor and one factor models was tested. The results supported a one factor structure. Cronbach's alpha value was.85. The reading strategies exhibited statistically significant correlations with academic achievement in the Portuguese Language. Statistically significant differences between the female and the male participants in the RSU results were observed, with girls achieving higher scores. These results provide evidence of validity and reliability for the Portuguese version of the RSU. The implications of the results, limitations and issues to be approached in future investigations are discussed.O objetivo deste estudo foi adaptar e validar uma escala de avaliação de estratégias de leitura para a população Portuguesa.

Dropping out of Higher Education is an international concern with an impact on Higher Education Institutions, in general, and on individual career paths, in particular. In order to prevent this phenomenon and support both institutions and students in their decision-making, it is urgent to identify evasion factors in higher education. A review made in published articles in international scientific journals between January 2014 and December 2018 is presented, based on the Longitudinal Institutional Evasion Model. The search was carried out in four databases, with combinations of the keywords dropout, departure, academic adjustment, college adjustment, academic integration, social integration, and higher education. Twenty-four articles that met the inclusion criteria were fully read. The articles were described and the content was systematized in meta-synthesis. Factors related to attributes prior to entering higher education were identified; objectives and commitments prior and subsequent to this entry; institutional experiences; academic and social integration. Evasion signaling measures were also identified. Implications for research, services and policies of Higher Education Institutions are discussed.
