: In the knowledge society we must be able to deal with a new type of knowledge which is dynamic, distributed/globalized and complex. This change in the nature of knowledge imposes new requirements on educational systems which (i) must provide the individuals with new cognitive tools and (ii) must aim at an harmonic integration between the learning processes traditionally taking place within the Institutions and those emerging spontaneously and informally, mainly on the Internet. Some of the key cognitive skills required to build dynamically our personal knowledge and to act wisely and effectively in knowledge society are identified and discussed. The possible role of technology as a resource for supporting the development of those skills is discussed as well. Finally the present situation of our national educational system is considered and some conditions required to answers successfully to the challenges of knowledge society are discussed.

Supporting the design of pilot learning activities with the Pedagogical Plan Manager

    Get PDF
Pilot actions for introducing ICT-based innovation in school education generally involve a multitude of elements and a range of different actors. Accounting for and grasping this complexity calls for systematic pedagogical planning efforts that provide a solid basis for accommodating the different perspectives, for analysing the factors at play and also for casting light on the initial assumptions and theoretical framework adopted. These are the issues currently being addressed in a European project called ReMath, in which the authors are developing and testing a prototype ICT-based tool called the Pedagogical Plan Manager (PPM). The system supports the construction and sharing of pedagogical plans within a community of different actors operating in different contexts with different visions. This paper briefly describes some of the requirements that have shaped the PPM and outlines the conceptual model on which it is based. The system is described in the light of two vital characteristics it presents for the design of learning activities, namely expressiveness and flexibility

Sizing and coordination strategies of battery energy storage system co-located with wind farm : the UK perspective

    Get PDF
The rapid development and growth of battery storage have heightened an interest in the co-location of battery energy storage systems (BESS) with renewable energy projects which enables the stacking of multiple revenue streams while reducing connection charges of BESS. To help wind energy industries better understand the coordinated operation of BESS and wind farms and its associated profits, this paper develops a simulation model to implement a number of coordination strategies where the BESS supplies enhanced frequency response (EFR) service and enables the time shift of wind generation based on the UK perspective. The proposed model also simulates the degradation of Lithium-Ion battery and incorporates a state of charge (SOC) dependent limit on the charge rate derived from a constant current-constant voltage charging profile. In addition, a particle swarm optimisation-based battery sizing algorithm is developed here on the basis of the simulation model to determine the optimal size of the co-located BESS along with SOC-related strategy variables that maximise the net present value of the wind + BESS system at the end of the EFR contract

Surgical findings and outcomes after unilateral adrenalectomy for primary hyperaldosteronism in cats: a multi-institutional retrospective study

Case series summary: Twenty-nine cats from different institutions with confirmed or highly suspected primary hyperaldosteronism treated by unilateral adrenalectomy were retrospectively included in this study. The most frequent clinical signs were lethargy (n = 20; 69%) and neck ventroflexion (n = 17; 59%). Hypokalaemia was present in all cats, creatinine kinase was elevated in 15 and hyperaldosteronism was documented in 24. Hypertension was frequently encountered (n = 24; 89%). Preoperative treatment included potassium supplementation (n = 19; 66%), spironolactone (n = 16; 55%) and amlodipine (n = 11; 38%). There were 13 adrenal masses on the right side, 15 on the left and, in one cat, no side was reported. The median adrenal mass size was 2 × 1.5 cm (range 1-4.6 × 0.4-3.8); vascular invasion was present in five cats, involving the caudal vena cava in four cats and the renal vein in one. Median duration of surgery was 57 mins. One major intraoperative complication (3%) was reported and consisted of haemorrhage during the removal of a neoplastic thrombus from the caudal vena cava. In 4/29 cats (14%), minor postoperative complications occurred and were treated medically. One fatal complication (3%) was observed, likely due to disseminated intravascular coagulation. The median duration of hospitalisation was 4 days; 97% of cats survived to discharge. The potassium level normalised in 24 cats within 3 months of surgery; hypertension resolved in 21/23 cats. Follow-up was available for 25 cats with a median survival of 1082 days. Death in the long-term follow-up was mainly related to worsening of comorbidities. Relevance and novel information: Adrenalectomy appears to be a safe and effective treatment with a high rate of survival and a low rate of major complications. Long-term medical treatment was not required
