Etnoarcheologia w praktyce. Z badań niedawnej przeszłości
W artykule przedstawione zostały wybrane aspekty, możliwości oraz ograniczenia metod i narzędzi etnoarcheologicznych, wykorzystywanych w badaniach niedawnej przeszłości. Praktykę etnoarcheologiczną zaprezentowano na przykładzie badań prowadzonych na północnych terenach Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej. Tematem opisywanego projektu są miejsca objęte dyskursem wspólnotowym, wpisane w krajobrazy fizyczny i kulturowy pięciu gmin. Prace badawcze dotyczą miejsc ważnych dla lokalnych społeczności, stanowiących impuls do wieloaspektowego poznawania historii, kulturowej rzeczywistości, dziedzictwa kulturowego oraz tożsamości mieszkańców badanych terenów. Strategia badawcza stanowi propozycję interdyscyplinarnej metodologii – zestawienia i połączenia etnograficznych i archeologicznych procedur powiązanych z ustaleniami z zakresu historii i historii sztuki.
Archeologizacja krajobrazu. Dynamika współczesnych przemian i negocjowanie społecznych znaczeń - przykład wybranych wsi Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej
In the article, the authors describe the process of archaeologization of selected objects in the local landscape, using examples from five municipalities located in the northern areas of the Polish Jurassic Highland. They look at the processes of persistence or transformation (replacement, revitalization, expansion) and abandonment (destruction, disappearance). The analysis of the collected materials combines the perspectives of archaeology and ethnography/cultural anthropology. It is part of the understanding of landscape as a cultural heritage that runs over time, its form and meaning are fields for negotiation by various entities (local communities, state administration and experts/researchers).In the article, the authors describe the process of archaeologization of selected objects in the local landscape, using examples from five municipalities located in the northern areas of the Polish Jurassic Highland. The Former Gestapo Headquarters and the Provincial Office of Public Security in Anstadt Avenue in Łódź Interdisciplinary Site Research
The paper discusses the research methods and the most important results of the interdisciplinary project “The Former Gestapo Headquarters and the Provincial Office of Public Security in Anstadt Avenue in Łódź. Interdisciplinary Site Research” conducted in 2019–2021. Considering the challenges faced by the archaeology of the contemporary past, a subdiscipline of archaeology, an attempt was made to link the results of archaeological research to the relatively well-known historical context of structural and functional transformations of the site explored, mostly the establishment of a Jewish school in Anstadt Avenue at the end of the 1930s, the operation of the Gestapo headquarters during the Second World War and of the communist Provincial Office of Public Security after the war, and the division of the site into police and school sections in 1957, which has been preserved to date. Also ethnographic research was carried out, which identified sources referring to the forms of remembrance and commemoration of places, events, and people. The Authors hope that the archaeological research will be soon resumed on account of the planned investments, allowing to publish a complementary and interdisciplinary monograph of the site explored
Places of Memory and Oblivion in the Cultural Landscapes of the Polish Jurassic Highland. References and Extensions
Publikacja powstała w ramach projektu badawczego „Miejsca pamięci i zapomnienia. Interdyscyplinarne badania północnych terenów Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej”. | The publication was prepared as part of the project Places of Memory and Oblivion. Interdisciplinary Studies of the Northern Areas of the Polish Jurassic Highland.Prezentowany tom zamyka serię 6 opublikowanych wcześniej raportów badawczych, przygotowanych w ramach projektu „Miejsca pamięci i zapomnienia. Badania interdyscyplinarne północnych terenów Jury Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej”, zrealizowanego na Wydziale Filozoficzno-Historycznym Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego w latach 2014–2019 w ramach Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego. The Professor Andrzej Nadolski’s interests in knightly culture – research and popularization of knowledge
The knightly culture is an issue of the margin
of science and, as such, becomes the object of
research of medieval study, including archaeology
and weapon study. Among these was undoubtedly
the forerunner of Andrzej Nadolski. His
research into knightly culture and popularization
of knowledge about it was the result of attempts
to interpret the material side of life of medieval
knights, especially weaponry. Interests in
knightly culture of the scholar became the result
of a particular stage of development of Polish arts
and research challenges facing Polish archeology
erected from the forties
to the nineties of the
Twentieth
century.
In the initial period based on a top-down program
of study of material culture of early medieval
Polish state, Nadolski placed particular emphasis
on the study of early medieval weapons. In his
study of the early arms and armour from the Polish
lands were, however, discussed the cultural role of
the sword and the spear.
Within a few decades of his professional activity
Andrzej Nadolski has repeatedly argued that he
was knowledgeable about the history and transformation
of medieval chivalry, which were not in the
center of his research interests. These interests were
often the carcass of his analysis of clothing and
armor shows on the images of kings and knights
battle performances, and virtually all studies and
the discussions weapons, archaeological sites (mote
castles, battlefields) and medieval art of war, which
came from his pen.
Nadolski’s erudition in the field of knowledge
of the culture of chivalry was most apparent
in his popularization work. By moving into the
issues such as the ethos of chivalry and its Christian
inspiration, knightly rituals, martial arts of
war and tournaments, heraldry and hunting. His
work has become a precious tip for further indepth
study as part of a modern, interdisciplinary
paradigm practicing
of historical archeology and
weapon studies
Mount Skarzawa. Archaeological (and not only) exploration of place
The article presents an example of Mount Skarzawa (near Mstów, on the
north-east of Częstochowa) which has shown the cognitive potential of ethnographic
interviews for the archaeological research on the recent past. Skarzawa
according to the narrative of local residents was regarded as a bad place. There
are many legends connected with the Skarzawa Mountain: about suicides or the
calf, which haunted at night; about Polish insurgents buried here in 1863; Germans,
who hid the treasure during the World War I and about the hiding Jews at
the beginning of World War II. Conducted archaeological research revealed,
among others: cavity containing bones of the human hand and parts of equipment
of a German soldier from the World War I. It can be assumed that in the
grave a soldier or a few German soldiers who died during the war were buried
because of the German-Russian actions that took place around Mstów in
1914–1915. Probably the moment of burial was registered by local residents,
which gave rise to stories about treasure buried by the Germans during the
World War I. Probably after the war the grave was exhumed and the remains
were transferred to one of the collective war cemeteries of German and Russian
soldiers in the vicinity of Częstochowa
Archeologia nas a tożsamość lokalna. Kontekst interdyscyplinarny
In this paper, the Author presents the semantic and methodological scope and characteristics of a new field the archaeology of the contemporary past. In his opinion the essence of the archaeology of the contemporary past is best conveyed by the term archaeology of us, which refers to the relationships between individuals or communities and their own material heritage. Due to the community and local dimension of archaeology of the contemporary past, an important source in this field is oral tradition, which is obtained and analysed during ethnographic interviews. The author refers to his own experience, gained during many years of research in the Polish Jurassic Highland, and indicates the importance and research effectiveness of incorporating the methodology of ethnographic research into the perspective of archaeology of the contemporary past.
