    F8 haplotype and inhibitor risk: results from the Hemophilia Inhibitor Genetics Study (HIGS) Combined Cohort.

Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field.Ancestral background, specifically African descent, confers higher risk for development of inhibitory antibodies to factor VIII (FVIII) in haemophilia A. It has been suggested that differences in the distribution of FVIII gene (F8) haplotypes, and mismatch between endogenous F8 haplotypes and those comprising products used for treatment could contribute to risk. Data from the Hemophilia Inhibitor Genetics Study (HIGS) Combined Cohort were used to determine the association between F8 haplotype 3 (H3) vs. haplotypes 1 and 2 (H1 + H2) and inhibitor risk among individuals of genetically determined African descent. Other variables known to affect inhibitor risk including type of F8 mutation and human leucocyte antigen (HLA) were included in the analysis. A second research question regarding risk related to mismatch in endogenous F8 haplotype and recombinant FVIII products used for treatment was addressed. Haplotype 3 was associated with higher inhibitor risk among those genetically identified (N = 49) as of African ancestry, but the association did not remain significant after adjustment for F8 mutation type and the HLA variables. Among subjects of all racial ancestries enrolled in HIGS who reported early use of recombinant products (N = 223), mismatch in endogenous haplotype and the FVIII proteins constituting the products used did not confer greater risk for inhibitor development. Haplotype 3 was not an independent predictor of inhibitor risk.     Anisotropic flow at RHIC: How unique is the number-of-constituent-quark scaling?

    The transverse momentum dependence of the anisotropic flow v2v_2 for π\pi, KK, nucleon, Λ\Lambda, Ξ\Xi and Ω\Omega is studied for Au+Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200 GeV within two independent string-hadron transport approaches (RQMD and UrQMD). Although both models reach only 60% of the absolute magnitude of the measured v2v_2, they both predict the particle type dependence of v2v_2, as observed by the RHIC experiments: v2v_2 exhibits a hadron-mass hierarchy (HMH) in the low pTp_T region and a number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) dependence in the intermediate pTp_T region. The failure of the hadronic models to reproduce the absolute magnitude of the observed v2v_2 indicates that transport calculations of heavy ion collisions at RHIC must incorporate interactions among quarks and gluons in the early, hot and dense phase. The presence of an NCQ scaling in the string-hadron model results suggests that the particle-type dependencies observed in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate pTp_T might be related to the hadronic cross sections in vacuum rather than to the hadronization process itself.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; A new author (H.     Evidence from Identified Particles for Active Quark and Gluon Degrees of Freedom

    Measurements of intermediate pT (1.5 < pT < 5.0 GeV/c) identified particle distributions in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies display striking dependencies on the number of constituent quarks in the corresponding hadron. One finds that elliptic flow at intermediate pT follows a constituent quark scaling law as predicted by models of hadron formation through coalescence. In addition, baryon production is also found to increase with event multiplicity much faster than meson production. The rate of increase is similar for all baryons, and seemingly independent of mass. This indicates that the number of constituent quarks determines the multiplicity dependence of identified hadron production at intermediate pT.     Metallo-dielectric diamond and zinc-blende photonic crystals

    It is shown that small inclusions of a low absorbing metal can have a dramatic effect on the photonic band structure. In the case of diamond and zinc-blende photonic crystals, several complete photonic band gaps (CPBG's) can open in the spectrum, between the 2nd-3rd, 5th-6th, and 8th-9th bands. Unlike in the purely dielectric case, in the presence of small inclusions of a low absorbing metal the largest CPBG for a moderate dielectric constant (epsilon<=10) turns out to be the 2nd-3rd CPBG. The 2nd-3rd CPBG is the most important CPBG, because it is the most stable against disorder. For a diamond and zinc-blende structure of nonoverlapping dielectric and metallo-dielectric spheres, a CPBG begins to decrease with an increasing dielectric contrast roughly at the point where another CPBG starts to open--a kind of gap competition. A CPBG can even shrink to zero when the dielectric contrast increases further. Metal inclusions have the biggest effect for the dielectric constant 2<=epsilon<=12, which is a typical dielectric constant at near infrared and in the visible for many materials, including semiconductors and polymers. It is shown that one can create a sizeable and robust 2nd-3rd CPBG at near infrared and visible wavelengths even for a photonic crystal which is composed of more than 97% low refractive index materials (n<=1.45, i.e., that of silica glass or a polymer). These findings open the door for any semiconductor and polymer material to be used as genuine building blocks for the creation of photonic crystals with a CPBG and significantly increase the possibilities for experimentalists to realize a sizeable and robust CPBG in the near infrared and in the visible.     Azimuthal anisotropy and correlations in the hard scattering regime at RHIC

    Azimuthal anisotropy (v2v_2) and two-particle angular correlations of high pTp_T charged hadrons have been measured in Au+Au collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130 GeV for transverse momenta up to 6 GeV/c, where hard processes are expected to contribute significantly. The two-particle angular correlations exhibit elliptic flow and a structure suggestive of fragmentation of high pTp_T partons. The monotonic rise of v2(pT)v_2(p_T) for pT<2p_T<2 GeV/c is consistent with collective hydrodynamical flow calculations.     Decreasing Trends in Intestinal Resection and Re-Resection in Crohn's Disease A Nationwide Cohort Study:A Nationwide Cohort Study

    OBJECTIVE: To assess time trends in intestinal resection and re-resection in Crohn's disease (CD) patients.SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CD treatment has changed considerably over the past decades. The effect of these advances on the necessity of intestinal resections and the risk of re-resection is unclear.METHODS: In this nationwide cohort study, adult CD patients with ileocolonic, small bowel, colon, or rectum resections between 1991 and 2015 were included. Data were retrieved from the Dutch nationwide network and registry of histopathology and cytopathology (PALGA). Time trends were analyzed with a broken stick model and Cox proportional hazard model with smoothing splines.RESULTS: The identified cohort comprised 8172 CD patients (3293/4879 male/female) in whom 10,315 intestinal resections were performed. The annual intestinal resection rate decreased nonlinearly from 22.7/100,000 CD patients (1991) to 2.5/100,000 (2015). A significantly steeper decrease was observed before 1999 (slope -1.56) as compared to subsequent years (slope -0.41) (P &lt; 0.001). Analogous trends were observed for ileocolonic, small bowel, and colon resections. Overall cumulative risk of re-resection was 10.9% at 5 years, 18.6% at 10 years, and 28.3% at 20 years after intestinal resection. The hazard for intestinal re-resection showed a nonlinear decreasing trend, with hazard ratio 0.39 (95% confidence interval 0.36-0.44) in 2000 and hazard ratio 0.25 (95% confidence interval 0.18-0.34) in 2015 as compared to 1991.CONCLUSION: Over the past 25 years, intestinal resection rate has decreased significantly for ileocolonic, small bowel, and colonic CD.
