Ants inhabiting stumps on clearcuts in managed forest in western Poland
We studied ant communities living in stumps left on clearcuts. The clearcuts were located in a managed forest in western Poland. Depending on the study site, 10-80% of the stumps were inhabited by ant colonies. Lasius platythorax was the dominant of the community. We found the diameter of the stump to be positively related with the occurrence of some ant species. In general, oak and pine stumps were inhabited in a similar proportion. Formica fusca, however, showed a distinct preference for oaks. All species avoided each other with exception of F. fusca which preferred all species other than L. platythorax. We did not find the presence of red wood ants to significantly affect the occurrence of ant colonies in these stumps. The results of our investigations indicate that stumps left on clearcuts are convenient nest site for ants. Leaving stumps affects positively the growth of the L. platythorax population
Teoria i praktyka celebrytyzacji politycznej. Celebryci polityczni w internetowych serwisach plotkarskich
Celebrities are becoming a subject of growing interest for researchers and journalists. Studies on fame and popularity have become a separate research field with its own academic periodical. From rock star to political star – curious case of Paweł Kukiz persona power
2015 presidential election was a turning point in a history of celebritisation of politics in Poland. Rock vocalist Paweł Kukiz unexpectedly finished third with 20% of votes, the highest result of any celebrity–candidate in presidential elections. He achieved that, campaigning mostly on Facebook, without any significant power base and financial support. Kukiz has set up his own political organization, which in turn, has gained a 9% backing in the parliamentary elections. He achieved that with no political platform, no media backing, and no party structure. We argue that his persona was crucial asset in his political success. We will show how Kukiz created, managed and performed his persona, how he used it to mobilize three million voters and then to create and brand his “Kukiz’15 Movement”. Finally we analyse limits, traps and contradictions of this new persona power. Analysed material included Paweł Kukiz and his opponents Facebook posts, televised political advertisements, performances in celebrity tv shows and debates
Leczenie sorafenibem w zaawansowanym raku tarczycy - opis przypadku
Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) usually has a good prognosis. The treatment, including total thyroidectomy and complementary radioiodine
(RAI) therapy, gives complete remission in 90% of patients. However, in 10% of subjects with metastatic disease, the prognosis is poor.
In the group of patients with disease progression and no 131I uptake, searching for new therapeutic modalities before all tyrosine kinase
inhibitors and other antiangiogenic agents is necessary.
The study presents the case of a 55-year-old male with advanced PTC /pT3mNxMo/ diagnosed in 1993. Primary treatment by total thyroidectomy
and 131I ablation led to complete remission. In 2000 local as well as lymph node recurrence was diagnosed and successively
treated by surgery. In 2006 an increasing serum thyroglobulin level was noted and a single lung metastasis was diagnosed and operated on.
In 2007 new foci in CNS and vertebral column with no 131I uptake were stated. Further progression (bones, CNS, and pterygoid muscle)
was confirmed by PET-CT. The patient underwent neurosurgical metastasectomy twice and palliative CNS and vertebra’s radiotherapy.
Liver metastases were diagnosed in 2009. Treatment with increasing doses of thalidomide (up to 800 mg/d) was administered for 3 months
with a good tolerance; however, the therapy was withdrawn due to cancer progression. Next, sorafenib (800 mg/d) was given for 16 weeks.
Radiological examination performed after 16 weeks confirmed stable disease, whereas 2 months later, after sorafenib withdrawal due to
lack of treatment possibility, further progression was observed. Metronomic chemotherapy with Adriamycin was instituted which gave
disease stabilization for 6 months. The patient died with advanced disseminated disease due to pulmonary embolism.
We present this case to document no adverse effects of therapy with sorafenib in a patient with brain DTC metastases. Sorafenib therapy
was only short-term, but no progression occurred in this time. (Pol J Endocrinol 2010; 61 (5): 492-496)Rak brodawkowaty tarczycy należy do nowotworów o dobrym rokowaniu. Terapia oparta na całkowitym wycięciu tarczycy i uzupełniającym
leczeniu jodem promieniotwórczym u 90% pacjentów prowadzi do całkowitej remisji choroby nowotworowej.
W pracy przedstawiono przypadek 55-letniego pacjenta z rozpoznaniem zaawansowanego raka brodawkowatego tarczycy/pT3mNxMo
leczonego od 1993 roku, u którego w terapii zastosowano inhibitor angiogenezy (talidomid) i kinaz tyrozynowych (sorafenib). Leczenie
pierwotne, dwuetapowe całkowite wycięcie tarczycy w 1994 i uzupełniające leczenie 131I (60 mCi) w 1994 roku doprowadziło do remisji
choroby nowotworowej. W 2000 chory przebył operacyjne usunięcie wznowy miejscowej i przerzutów do węzłów chłonnych. W 2006 roku,
w toku diagnostyki narastającej hipertyreoglobulinemii rozpoznano przerzut do płuca prawego, który usunięto operacyjnie. W 2007 roku
stwierdzono niejodochwytny przerzut do kręgosłupa i ośrodkowego układu nerwowego (OUN). Kontrolne badania obrazowe, w tym
PET-CT, potwierdziły dalszą progresję raka pod postacią nowych ognisk przerzutowych w OUN, kośćcu i mięśniu skrzydłowym. Chory
przebył 2-krotne operacyjne usunięcie zmian ogniskowych w OUN, paliatywną radioterapię OUN i paliatywną radioterapię przerzutu do
kręgosłupa. W 2009 roku rozpoznano przerzuty do wątroby. W dalszej terapii stosowano talidomid we wzrastającej dawce do 800 mg/d.
spowodowała żadnych powikłań, a w czasie 16 tygodni jej stosowania obserwowano stabilizację zaawansowanej choroby nowotworowej.

13-cis-retinoic acid re-differentiation therapy and recombinant human thyrotropin-aided radioiodine treatment of non-Functional metastatic thyroid cancer: a single-center, 53-patient phase 2 study
In 30–50% of patients with metastatic non-medullary thyroid cancer the metastases are not radioiodine-avid and so there is no effective treatment. Retinoids have demonstrated inhibition of thyroid tumor growth and induction of radioiodine uptake. The aim of our study was to assess benefits of the retinoic acid (RA) treatment to re-differentiate non-functional NMTC metastases
Indications for surgery of thyroid cancer based on bioptate molecular examination
We
wczesnej fazie tworzenia się przerzutu trudno odróżnić
węzły chłonne odczynowe od przerzutowych, stąd pytanie,
czy w rozpoznaniu przerzutów podejrzanych węzłów
chłonnych moze pomóc badanie molekularne uzyskanego
bioptatu. Celem pracy była ocena wyników bioptatów badanych
metodą molekularną, RT-PCR (reverse transcription
polymerase chain reaction) dla mRNA tyreoglobuliny (Tg, thyreoglobulin).
Materiał i metody: W badaniu wzięła udział grupa 193 chorych
raz w toku obserwacji uzyskano wynik dodatni
RT-PCR. Łącznie pobrano od nich 308 bioptatów.
Reakcję RT-PCR wykonywano z materiału pozostałego
w igle po wykonaniu tradycyjnego rozmazu cytologicznego.
Kontrolę izolacji RNA i amplifikacji cDNA przeprowadzano,
stosując startery dla dehydrogenazy fosforanu-3-gliceroaldehydu
(GADPH, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase).
Startery dla tyreoglobuliny obejmowały eksony
3-5; stosowano 39 cykli PCR.
Wyniki: W badanej wyselekcjonowanej grupie chorych
uzyskano 246 wyników dodatnich badania RT-PCR, a rozpoznanie
przerzutów do węzłów chłonnych potwierdzono
za pomocą badania cytologicznego w 71,1% przypadków.
Spośród pozostałych 71 wyników, w których wynik badania
cytologicznego nie był jednoznacznie zgodny z badaniem
molekularnym, w 34 przypadkach potwierdzenie
W przypadku,
kiedy badanie cytologiczne jest ujemne, wiarygodność
dodatniego wyniku badania molekularnego nie jest pełna,
dlatego przed podjęciem leczenia operacyjnego koniecznie
należy przeprowadzić indywidualną analizę wskazań,
a dodatni wynik badania molekularnego kwalifikuje chorego
do grupy wysokiego ryzyka wznowy w węzłach.Introduction: In differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) the differentiation
between reactive and metastatic lymph nodes is
difficult at the early stages of metastasis. The aim of the study
was to assess the results of fine needle aspiration (FNA)
samples examination by the use of RT-PCR for Tg mRNA.
The special attention was directed to the evaluation of specificity
of TgRNA estimation.
Material and methods: The group consisted of 193 DTC
patients with suspicion of lymph node recurrence and at
least one positive RT-PCR result. Thyroglobulin RT-PCR was
conducted in residual material left after preparation of cytological
smears from FNA specimens. Primer spanning
exons 3-5 were used with 39 cycles of PCR. RNA isolation
control and cDNA amplification were carried out using
GAPDH starters. 308 lymph node biopsies were included.
Results: 246 positive results for Tg RNA were observed in
the analyzed group, 71.1% confirmed by FNA. Among other
71 results, in which cytological examination did not correspond
unequivocally to molecular findings, in 34 metastases
were confirmed both by cytological and clinical examination.
There were 11 patients operated due to the positive
serial molecular examination only. In 10 (91%) of them DTC metastases were confirmed. So, the positive predictive value
of the molecular result ranged between 75-89% and the
negative one was 100%.
Conclusions: In DTC patients RT-PCR Tg mRNA is helpful
in qualification of suspicious lymph nodes to surgery in DTC
patients. At the negative cytological finding, the positive
molecular result constitutes an indication for early surgery
Frame Analysis in the Study of the Framing Contest: Newspapers on the Murder of Marek Rosiak
Cel: opis mechanizmów ramowania, identyfikacja konkurujących ram i pomiar wyników rozgrywki narracyjno-interpretacyjnej (framing contest) na przykładzie ramowania ataku na biuro poselskie Prawa i Sprawiedliwości 19 października 2010 roku. Metody badań: interpretatywna strategia analizy ramowania polegająca na indukcyjnej, jakościowej rekonstrukcji ram z wykorzystaniem homeostatycznego modelu narracji. Przeanalizowano lokalizację ram w strukturze analizowanych tekstów i związane z nią zabiegi metakomunikacyjne (przeramowujące). Dzienniki stosowały dwie wzorcowe strategie forsowania wybranej ramy: otwartą stronniczość („Nasz Dziennik”) i subtelną metakomunikacyjność („Gazeta Wyborcza”). Oryginalność i wartość poznawcza: zaproponowana konceptualizacja ramowania przywraca pojęciu narracyjne i metakomunikacyjne pierwiastki. Przyjęta strategia indukcyjnej rekonstrukcji ram unika powszechnego w analizie ramowej problemu niejasnego związku między ramami a materiałem empirycznym. Badanie realizuje postulat zwiększenia szczegółowości analizy ramowej poprzez redukcję jednostki kodowania do zdania. Tekst proponuje narzędzia precyzyjnego pomiaru ekspozycji ram i wizualnego mapowania rozgrywki interpretacyjnej i tendencyjności ramowania.Scientific objective: description of framing mechanisms, identification of competing frames and measurement of the results of a framing contest on the example of framing the attack on the parliamentary office of the Law and Justice party on October 19, 2010. Research methods: interpretative framing analysis strategy based on inductive, qualitative reconstruction of frames using a homeostatic narrative model. The location of the frames in the structure of the analyzed texts and the related metacommunication (reframing) procedures were examined. The relative exposure of the frames as well as the homogeneity and tilt of the framing were calculated using the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, and on this basis the map of the results of the framing contest was created. Qualitative data analysis software, MaxQDA12, was tested in news articles from four leading newspapers published the day after the reported incident. Results and conclusions: the analyzed framing contest was highly polarized. In the case studied, only two dominant frames and one marginal frame were identified. There was a significant one-sidedness and bias of framing in news articles manifested by high values of the homogeneity indices and framing tilt. Only one of the four newspapers presented the competing frames in a balanced way. The newspapers used two exemplary strategies for pushing through the chosen framing: open bias (Nasz Dziennik) and subtle metacommunication (Gazeta Wyborcza). Originality and cognitive value: the proposed conceptualization of framing restores the concept of narrative and metacommunication elements. The adopted strategy of inductive reconstruction of frames avoids the problem of an unclear relationship between frames and empirical material, common in frame analysis. The study implements the postulate of increasing the detail of the framework analysis by reducing the coding unit to a sentence. The text proposes tools for precise measurement of frame exposure and visual mapping of framing contest and framing bias
The theory and practice of political celebritization. Political celebrities in Internet gossip websites

Celebrity Endorsement in Political Communication – Polish Practice on American Licence
Artykuł opisuje zjawisko celebrity endorsement (wsparcia celebryckiego)
w komunikacji politycznej. Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest dostosowanie definicji celebrity endorsementw marketingu komercyjnym do realiów komunikowania wyborczego. W artykule opisano typy endorsmentów celebryckich i przykłady ich zastosowania w polskich kampaniach wyborczych. Kolejna część tekstu służy przedstawieniu teoretycznych modeli skuteczności wsparcia celebryckiego, takich jak: modele źródła, teoria transferu znaczeń, model zaangażowania widowni, model skrótu poznawczego i efekt ingerencji w agendę. The paper describes theoretical and empirical aspects of celebrity endorsement in political communication. Definition of celebrity endorsement laid out in commercial marketing is adopted and adjusted to political communication. Various types of celebrity endorsements and their examples in Polish electoral campaigns are then described. The paper presents theoretical models of celebrity endorsement effects, such as: source models, meaning transfer theory, audience intensity model, cognitive shortcut model and agenda setting effect of celebrity endorsement. The case of Oprah Winfrey endorsment of Barack Obama in 2007 primaries is discussed as
a source of empirical evidence of impact of celebrity endorsement in political communication
