    The effect of formulation additives on the properties of films prepared using Terminalia randii Baker F Gum

    Background: Natural polymers are becoming useful excipients in pharmaceutical formulations due to their non-toxic and biodegradable properties. One of their common uses is in the manufacture of polymeric films.Objective: This present work is to evaluate the effect of plasticizer type and polymer type on the properties of Terminalia films.Method: Films were prepared by solvent casting method using Terminalia, xanthan gums and hydroxylpropy lmethylcellulose (HPMC). Terminlia was also combined with xanthan, HPMC at different ratios using propylene glycol and glycerol as plaasticizers. The films were characterized using adherence, folding endurance and mechanical properties were determined using tensile strength and percent elongation. Disintegration was carried out in a disintegration apparatus using distilled water, 0.1M HCl (pH 1.2) and phosphate buffer pH 6.8.Result: Films prepared with Terminalia and those prepared by combining Terminalia and xanthan gums showed adherence. Films plasticized with glycerol had higher folding endurance and tensile strength. When HPMC was combined with Terminalia, the disintegration of the films produced was significantly (p<0.05) reduced at pH 6.8Conclusion: Glycerol plasticizer produced films with optimal properties, while combination of Terminalia gum and HPMC, produced films with optimal properties.     Geochemistry and mineral chemistry of quartz mica schists within Iseyin-Oyan Schist Belt, Southwestern Nigeria

The study was aimed at identifying the schist within this belt and assess their metamorphism, geochemical characteristics and tectonic origin. Methods: Detailed geologic field mapping was undertaken where rocks were located, studied in-situ and identified. Samples of the schist were prepared for petrographic studies. Mineralogical contents were determined using X-Ray Diffraction technique. Polished sections were studied for mineral chemistry using Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. Rock samples were analysed using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry. Geochemical data were elucidated using diverse geochemical discrimination diagrams. Findings: The schists are quartz mica schists and occur in close association with amphibolites, intrusive granitoids and pegmatites. The Mineral assemblage indicates upper (at the western part) to lower (at the central part) amphibolite facies grade metamorphism in the area. Pyrope-almandine garnets occur in quartz mica schist at the western parts reinforcing higher pressure-temperature metamorphic conditions. The concentration (in %) of SiO2 ranged from 56.4-71.6; Al2O3, 13.7-21.1; Fe2O3, 2-8; MgO, 0.7-2.4; and K2O, 2.1-5.5 supporting the evidence for differential degrees of metamorphism. Large iron lithophile and high field strength elements are similar to the average upper continental crust. Pronounced negative Europium anomaly pointed to the major roles played by feldspars during the geological processes. Plagioclase ranged from albite-oligoclase and oligoclase- andesine. The precursors of the quartz mica schist are possibly arkosic and greywacke sands deposited within the active continental margins. Evidence of uplift and overturning suggested for the differential metamorphism may be due to these events usually associated with active continental margins. Applications: This study has identified the once named undifferentiated schist in the study area to be quartz mica schist with details in their grades of metamorphism elucidated.Published versio

    Strengthening retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment services in Nigeria: a case study of activities, challenges and outcomes 2017-2020.

    OBJECTIVES: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) will become a major cause of blindness in Nigerian children unless screening and treatment services expand. This article aims to describe the collaborative activities undertaken to improve services for ROP between 2017 and 2020 as well as the outcome of these activities in Nigeria. DESIGN: Descriptive case study. SETTING: Neonatal intensive care units in Nigeria. PARTICIPANTS: Staff providing services for ROP, and 723 preterm infants screened for ROP who fulfilled screening criteria (gestational age <34 weeks or birth weight ≤2000 g, or sickness criteria). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A WhatsApp group was initiated for Nigerian ophthalmologists and neonatologists in 2018. Members participated in a range of capacity-building, national and international collaborative activities between 2017 and 2018. A national protocol for ROP was developed for Nigeria and adopted in 2018; 1 year screening outcome data were collected and analysed. In 2019, an esurvey was used to collect service data from WhatsApp group members for 2017-2018 and to assess challenges in service provision. RESULTS: In 2017 only six of the 84 public neonatal units in Nigeria provided ROP services; this number had increased to 20 by 2018. Of the 723 babies screened in 10 units over a year, 127 (17.6%) developed any ROP; and 29 (22.8%) developed type 1 ROP. Only 13 (44.8%) babies were treated, most by intravitreal bevacizumab. The screening criteria were revised in 2020. Challenges included lack of equipment to regulate oxygen and to document and treat ROP, and lack of data systems. CONCLUSION: ROP screening coverage and quality improved after national and international collaborative efforts. To scale up and improve services, equipment for neonatal care and ROP treatment is urgently needed, as well as systems to monitor data. Ongoing advocacy is also essential

    Neck circumference is independently associated with relative systemic hypertension in young adults with sickle cell anaemia

    Abstract Background A seemingly interesting observation in patients with sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is that they usually have lower systemic blood pressures (BP) and insulin resistance than persons in the general population in spite of chronic inflammation and vasculopathy. However, relative systemic hypertension (rHTN) has been linked to pulmonary hypertension, increased blood viscosity and renal insufficiency, which could indicate a risk of developing cardiometabolic disorder (CMD) in SCA. We therefore hypothesized that neck circumference (NC) and CMD marker; triglyceride glucose (TyG) index would independently predict rHTN in young adults with SCA in steady state. Methods We compared the anthropometrical, hematological, hemorheological and CMD markers between SCA patients with normal BP < 120/70 mmHg; nHTN, n = 65) and those with rHTN (BP ≥ 120/70 mmHg, n = 32). Results Our results showed that SCA with rHTN had significantly higher body weight, waist circumference, NC, plasma viscosity, systolic and diastolic BP. Results also indicated that NC (OR: 2.98; 95% CI 1.46 to 6.10, p < 0.01) was a predictor of rHTN in SCA independent of gender, age, weight, waist circumference, BMI, blood viscosity, triglyceride or TyG. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis also showed that NC was the most efficient predictor of rHTN than other CMD markers. Conclusion The present study demonstrates that increased NC is a salient risk factors that is independently associated with rHTN in SCA. The finding therefore underscores the utility of NC in early detection and stratification of systemic hypertension, particularly in individuals with SCA
