Fast analytical methods for the correction of signal random time-shifts and application to segmented HPGe detectors
Detection systems rely more and more on on-line or off-line comparison of
detected signals with basis signals in order to determine the characteristics
of the impinging particles. Unfortunately, these comparisons are very sensitive
to the random time shifts that may alter the signal delivered by the detectors.
We present two fast algebraic methods to determine the value of the time shift
and to enhance the reliability of the comparison to the basis signals.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
A Charming Class of Perfectly Orderable Graphs
We investigate the following conjecture of Vašek Chvátal: any weakly triangulated graph containing no induced path on five vertices is perfectly orderable. In the process we define a new polynomially recognizable class of perfectly orderable graphs called charming. We show that every weakly triangulated graph not containing as an induced subgraph a path on five vertices or the complement of a path on six vertices is charming
Coverage of complex tissue defects following open cervicothoracic spine surgery with a lower trapezius island myocutaneous flap-an interdisciplinary approach.
The study design is a clinical case series. The objective of this study was to present the concept and efficacy of the lower trapezius island myocutaneous flap (LTIMF) for management of complex wound healing disorders following open cervicothoracic spine surgery. Wound healing disturbances with myocutaneous defects after open spine surgery at the cervical and upper thoracic spine are well-described complications. In severe cases, plastic reconstructive coverage is often required as a last resort. A review of all adult patients with deep wound dehiscence and tissue defects following open cervicothoracic spine surgery, who were managed with plastic surgery reconstruction using a LTIMF at our institution, was conducted. Synopses of these cases are presented. Seven patients with a mean age of 73 years ± 13 (range 50 to 89 years) were included in this case series. Six out of seven patients had instrumented posterior fusion added to their decompression. All patients were managed with a LTIMF for wound coverage. No spinal implants were removed prior to LTIMF surgery. The mean follow-up was 5.2 months (± 5.4 months). No major flap failure occurred, and all patients presented with satisfactory cosmetic results. The only minor complication was development of a sterile subcutaneous seroma in two patients, which were successfully managed by puncture and aspiration. The LTIMF is an effective and reliable salvage treatment option for spine surgery patients offering stable coverage of deep tissue defects resulting from complex wound healing disorders at the cervical and upper thoracic spine

Preliminary insights into electro-sensitive ecolubricants: A comparative analysis based on nanocelluloses and nanosilicates in castor oil
The newest generation of lubricants needs to adapt to stricter environmental policies. Simple and sustainable formulations with tunable rheological properties under the action of electric potentials may be the key. The present research explored the feasibility of producing electro-sensitive ecolubricants based on nanocellulose (crystalline and fibrillar) or nanoclay (Cloisite 15A montmorillonite and halloysite nanotubes) dispersions in castor oil, at concentrations that ranged from 2 to 6 wt.%. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) measurements allowed for a first estimate on the electro-responsive potential of the nanofluids. The nanocelluloses and the montmorillonite suspensions presented a relaxation event in the dielectric loss, e", centered at ca. 2-4 kHz, which is related to interfacial polarization. Moreover, their actual electro-rheological (ER) effect under high electric potentials up to 4 kV/mm was assessed by determining the magnitude of the yield stress from steady flow curves at 25 °C. It was found that the nanocelluloses and the montmorillonite showed an enhancement of three orders of magnitude in their yield stress values at 4 kV/m. This enhancement was much greater than in the halloysite nanoclay, which did not exhibit any polarization). This is the starting point for the development of environmentally friendly ER lubricating fluids, based on nanocellulose and montmorillonites (layered nanosilicates), which might assist in reducing the friction and wear through the application of controlled electric fields.publishersversionpublishe
Perturbative Study of Bremsstrahlung and Pair-Production by Spin-1/2 Particles in the Aharonov-Bohm Potential
In the presence of an external Aharonov-Bohm potential, we investigate the
two QED processes of the emission of a bremsstrahlung photon by an electron,
and the production of an electron-positron pair by a single photon.
Calculations are carried out using the Born approximation within the framework
of covariant perturbation theory to lowest non-vanishing order in \alpha. The
matrix element for each process is derived, and the corresponding differential
cross-section is calculated. In the non-relativistic limit, the resulting
angular and spectral distributions and some polarization properties are

Maternal Anti-Toxoplasma Treatment during Pregnancy Is Associated with Reduced Sensitivity of Diagnostic Tests for Congenital Infection in the Neonate
Neonatal diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis is based on a combination of serological and molecular tests. Maternal screening and treatment differ according to national policies and may impact the sensitivity of diagnostic methods in infants at birth. In this multicenter study, 115 neonates born to 61 treated (53%) and 54 (47%) untreated women were retrospectively included in three centers (France, Serbia, and the United States) to assess the impact of maternal anti-Toxoplasma treatment on the performance of neonatal workup at birth (neosynthesized anti-Toxoplasma IgM, IgA, and IgG and quantitative PCR [qPCR]) using univariate and multivariate approaches. Independently of the time of maternal seroconversion, the serological techniques were impacted differently by maternal treatment. The detection of IgM by immunosorbent agglutination assay (ISAGA) and Western blotting (WB) dropped from 90.7% and 88.2% in untreated neonates to 533% and 51.9% in treated neonates (P lt 0.05), whereas IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and IgA ISAGA were not significantly affected by maternal treatment. A 2-fold reduction in the sensitivity of neosynthesized IgG by WB was also observed in the case of treatment during pregnancy (37.7% versus 82.3%). Interestingly, the effect of treatment was shown to be duration dependent, especially for IgM detection, when the treatment course exceeded 8 weeks, whatever the therapy. The sensitivity of Toxoplasma PCR in blood was also lowered by maternal treatment from 39.1% to 23.2%. These results highlight that anti-Toxoplasma therapy during pregnancy may set back biological evidence of neonatal infection at birth and underline the need for a careful serological follow-up of infants with normal workup.This is the peer-reviewed version of the article: Guegan, H.; Štajner, T.; Bobić, B.; Press, C.; Olariu, R.
