    Get PDF
The shortcomings of genotype x environment interaction  necessitated the use of molecular methods in characterizing many plant species and in determining their phylogenetic relationships. In this study, some selected cowpea lines (27 varieties) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile – Ife, the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), Samaru, Kaduna and Genetic Resource Centre, IITA, Ibadan were characterized using sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) profiling. The protein banding profiles of the 27 cowpea varieties were scored and subjected to cluster analysis using Ward's minimum-variance method (WMVM) for dendrogram grouping. The dendrogram generated from the SDS-PAGE profiles grouped the varieties into seven clusters at 52% similarity coefficient. Hence, the biochemical characterization revealed more precise discrimination among the 27 cowpea varieties studied. Get PDF
This study examined the determinants of audit quality among Consumer goods companies listed on the Nigerian stock exchange from 2009 to 2018. This study made use of secondary data obtained from fact books, annual reports, and account of selected consumer goods company under study. The relevant data were subjected to statistical analysis Pearson Correlation while the diagnostics test conducted were Multicollinearity, Autocorrelation, Normality, and Heteroscedasticity Test. The study’s findings showed that board size and company liquidity have a substantial positive influence on financial results, while audit fees, firm size, and audit committee meetings have a negative but non-significant impact. The study concluded that, since board size has a substantial positive effect on audit quality, the governmental body should track firms to ensure that the required board size is met as part of strategies to enhance audit quality among Nigeria’s publicly traded consumer goods companies

The study aims at evaluating the efficacy of different doses of powdered stem and leaf parts of Gmelina arborea on Dinoderus porcellus infesting yam chips in Jos metropolis. The experiment was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory of the Federal College of Forestry, Jos. Samples of infested yam chips and Gmelina arborea were collected in Jos metropolis. Newly emerged adult Dinoderus porcellus were exposed to the yam chips which were mixed with different levels of Gmelina arborea parts powder (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 g). The setup was monitored for 120 hours and mortality recorded. The study was carried out in a randomized complete design with treatments replicated thrice. Data was analysed using analysis of variance at 1 and 5 percent confidence level and Duncan test was used to separate the means. The results obtained reveal significant differences at p value=0.05 and 0.01. The results reveal that in all the doses, an increase in the amount of the powder resulted in increased incidence of D. porcellus mortality. After 120 hours of exposure, 100 % mortality was recorded from either 15 or 20 g stem bark + leaf powder treatment. From the results obtained, the use of 15 g stem bark+leaf powder of Gmelina arborea could be effective in yam chips preservation which could in turn strengthen food security. Estimation of Methane Emission Potentials in Landmark University Open Dump Site, OmuAran, Kwara State Nigeri

    Get PDF
Most of the increasing quantity of wastes in institutions of higher learning, are disposed of through open dumping. The decomposition of these wastes has been identified to be a source of methane emissions. This study estimated methane emissions from the open dumpsite in Landmark University. An exploratory study design was adopted. The study involved physical characterization of solid wastes at the Landmark University for a period of three months and the estimation of methane emission potentials of the dumpsite for the years 2011 to 2031 using IPCC Default Method (DM) and the Landfill Gas Emission (LandGEM) Model Version 3.02.The study revealed the percentage composition of waste to be 48, 16, 12, 10, 5 and 3% for plastics, garden trimmings, paper, metal, food waste and textile respectively. The maximum methane emission is 11.65 and 2.48 Mg/year for DM and LandGEM respectively in the year 2021 while the methane emissions will decline to 7.06 and 1.50 Mg/year for DM and LandGEM respectively in the year 2031. The contribution of methane emissions in the University is still little as reflected in the values of 11.65 and 2.48 Mg/year although there is a tendency to increase as population increases. Further studies should be carried out to provide methane specific properties of the solid waste generated in Omu-Aran in order to build an inventory of methane emission parameters

Pathogenicity and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of Salmonella species isolated from pond-reared Clarias gariepinus (Burchell,1822)

    No full text
Salmonella species has been isolated from fish ponds, and two different clinical cases of Salmonella infections were reported in tropical fishes. It therefore becomes important to investigate the occurrence of Salmonella in farmed Clarias gariepinus, and evaluate fish and public health significance.Bacteria isolated on Salmonella-Shigella agar from blood and upper intestinal tract of 50 C gariepinus juveniles were biochemically characterised and those identified as Salmonella sp were evaluated for antibiotic sensitivity using the disc diffusion method. Two groups, A and B of C. gariepinus juveniles were each divided into 4 subgroups of 10 fish. Three subgroups in A and B were experimentally infected via oral and intraperitoneal route respectively with 1.2 x 106, 1.2 x 107 and 1.2 x 108 cfu of Salmonella. The forth subgroup is the control. Daily observation was made for clinical signs, lesions and mortality for 14 days.Biochemical tests confirmed 72% and 32% occurrence of Salmonella sp in the intestinal tract and the blood of sampled fish respectively. Antibiotic resistance frequency of 100% (augmentin, ceftriazone and nitrofurantoin), 89% (gentamicin and amoxycilin), 78% (cotrimoxazole and tetracycline), 33% (ofloxacin) and 11% (ciprofloxacin and pefloxacin) was observed. The multiple antibiotic resistance indices of the observed isolates ranged from 0.5 to 0.9. No clinical signs, lesions or mortality was observed in experimentally infected fish.Farmed Clarias gariepinus may be a reservoir for Salmonella sp probably acquired from faecal contamination of pond water, or consumption of contaminated feed. Risk of Salmonella infection to consumers and producers may be high, with serious public and animal health significance. Multi-drug antibiotic resistance is an indication of misuse of antibiotic in our society. There is the danger of possible spread of multi-drug resistant Salmonella sp, and choice of drug for treatment of Salmonella infection in man and livestock may be limited. Keywords: Isolation, Salmonella sp, Experimental infection, Antibiotic sensitivit

Molecular Characterization of Basella alba L. and Basella rubra L. using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA Profiling

    Get PDF
The limitation of morphological characterization in revealing genetic variation in species has been the predisposition of most quantitative characters and some qualitative characters to environmental influences. This has necessitated the use of molecular methods in the characterization of species in the recent time. This study was designed to examine and characterize Basella alba and Basella rubra using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) profiling in order to provide useful information that could enhance the elucidation of their taxonomic status. Genomic DNA of fresh leaf samples of the two species were isolated and subsequently subjected to RAPD analysis by scoring for presence (1) or absence (0) of bands. Monomorphic and polymorphic bands were identified, number of amplified alleles determined, percentage polymorphism established, genetic diversity and genetic distance were calculated. The study revealed 123 individual fragments obtained from the 11 primers used, with 112 (91.06%) of the fragments being monomorphic, with 11 being polymorphic. The genetic variation between the species studied was 8.94%, while the genetic distance was 0.21. The results obtained indicated that the Basella alba and Basella rubra studied were quite close genetically, thus suggesting that there could be a possibility of gene flow between them.&nbsp

Insect pest are a major problem to food security, most especially in developing countries like Nigeria. There is an urgent need towards mitigating the effects of these group of insects, and botanical extracts had played an increasing role as an alternative insecticide. The aim of the present study is to investigate the anti-feeding effect of different dosage of Gmelina arborea stem bark and leaf powder against Dinoderus porcellus infesting yam chips. The study was conducted at the Entomology Laboratory of Federal College of Forestry, Jos. Soxhlet extraction using methanol was used to extract plant part samples. Presence of phytochemicals contained in the plant were examined following standard protocols. The antifeedant effects of different dosage of Gmelina arborea leaf and stem bark powder on Dinoderus porcellus was determined by monitoring yam chips weight loss. Data collected was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) at 1 % level of significance and the means separated using Duncan test. The results revealed presence of tannin, flavoid, saponins, alkaloids, reducing sugar and phenol with absence of steroid. The results also revealed that the various dosages have remarkable antifeedant effect on the development of D. porcellus. The weight loss of treated yam chips was significantly different from those of untreated yam chips. Therefore, the results obtained in this work accounts for the use of G. arborea plant parts powders as bio-preservative for yam chips against D. porcellus

Lack of phylogeographic structure in Nigerian village chickens revealed by mitochondrial DNA D-loop sequence analysis

    No full text
Genetic diversity studies that utilize phenotypic and genetic information are informative when formulating breeding and conservation plans. The present study utilizes sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) D-loop region of 232 village chickens from Southern and Northern Nigeria to determine the origin and diversity of Nigerian local chickens. Thirty-six polymorphic sites which generate 35 haplotypes are identified. Phylogenetic analyses group Nigerian local chickens to a single clade and 97.8% of the total maternal variation occurs within populations. Reference sequences representing the major chicken mtDNA lineages from Asia indicate the Indian subcontinent to be the likely main center of origin of Nigerian village chicken. Lack of phylogeographic structure among Nigerian village chickens suggest extensive genetic intermixing within the country. © Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2010
