Hard X-ray Properties of the Merging Cluster Abell 3667 as Observed with Suzaku

Wide-band Suzaku data on the merging cluster Abell 3667 were examined for hard X-ray emission in excess to the known thermal component. Suzaku detected X-ray signals in the wide energy band from 0.5 to 40 keV. The hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux observed by the HXD around the cluster center cannot be explained by a simple extension of the thermal emission with average temperature of ~7 keV. The emission is most likely an emission from a very hot (kT > 13.2 keV) thermal component around the cluster center, produced via a strong heating process in the merger. In the north-west radio relic, no signature of non-thermal emission was observed. Using the HXD, the overall upper-limit flux within a 34'x34' field-of-view around the relic is derived to be 5.3e-12 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 10-40 keV band, after subtracting the ICM contribution estimated using the XIS or the XMM-Newton spectra. Directly on the relic region, the upper limit is further tightened by the XIS data to be less than 7.3e-13 erg s-1 cm-2, when converted into the 10--40 keV band. The latter value suggest that the average magnetic field within the relic is higher than 1.6 uG. The non-thermal pressure due to magnetic fields and relativistic electrons may be as large as ~20% of the thermal pressure in the region.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, to be appeared in PASJ 200

Purpose: The programmed death 1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) pathway has garnered much attention for its roles in clinical oncology. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical impact of the PD-L1 expression and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) on neuroblastoma. Methods: We evaluated the PD-L1 expression and TIL status in 31 patients with neuroblastoma who underwent a biopsy or resection by an immunohistochemical analysis. Furthermore, we performed the serial analysis of the PD-L1 status before and after chemotherapy in 15 patients. Results: Among the 31 cases, 11 (35%) showed a positive PD-L1 expression. The survival analysis showed a trend toward an association between PD-L1 positivity and a decreased overall survival. PD-L1 positivity tended to be associated with higher levels of tumor markers. In the serial analysis of the PD-L1 status, positivity was noted in 8 of 15 patients before chemotherapy and 6 after chemotherapy. Notably, all four patients with a positive PD-L1 status both before and after chemotherapy had recurrence, and 3 of them died during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the PD-L1 tumor expression might be a good biomarker for the treatment of neuroblastoma patients, especially for advanced neuroblastoma.博士(医学)・乙第1458号・令和2年6月30日© Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2020This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Pediatric surgery international. A Galaxy Merger Scenario for the NGC 1550 Galaxy from Metal Distributions in the X-ray Emitting Plasma

The elliptical galaxy NGC 1550 at a redshift of z=0.01239z=0.01239, identified with an extended X-ray source RX J0419+0225, was observed with {\it XMM-Newton} for 31 ks. From the X-ray data and archival near infra-red data of Two Micron All Sky survay, we derive the profiles of components constituting the NGC 1550 system; the gas mass, total mass, metal mass, and galaxy luminosity. The metals (oxygen, silicon, and iron) are extended to 200\sim 200 kpc from the center, wherein \sim 70% of the KK-band luminosity is carried by NGC 1550 itself. As first revealed with {\it ASCA}, the data reconfirms the presence of a dark halo, of which the mass (1.6×1013M1.6 \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}) is typical of a galaxy group rather than of a single galaxy. Within 210 kpc, the KK-band mass-to-light ratio reaches 75M/L75 M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}, which is comparable to those of clusters of galaxies. The iron-mass-to-light ratio profile (silicon- and oxygen mass-to-light ratio profiles as well) exhibits about two orders of magnitude decrease toward the center. Further studies comparing mass densities of metals with those of the other cluster components reveal that the iron (as well as silicon) in the ICM traces very well the total gravitating mass, whereas the stellar component is significantly more concentrated to within several tens kpc of the NGC 1550 nucleus. Thus, in the central region, the amount of metals is significantly depleted for the luminous galaxy light. Among a few possible explanations of this effect, the most likely scenario is that galaxies in this system were initially much more extended than today, and gradually fell to the center and merged into NGC 1550.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, 2 table

National seroepidemiological study of COVID-19 after the initial rollout of vaccines: Before and at the peak of the Omicron-dominant period in Japan

BACKGROUND: Based on routine surveillance data, Japan has been affected much less by COVID-19 compared with other countries. To validate this, we aimed to estimate SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and examine sociodemographic factors associated with cumulative infection in Japan. METHODS: A population-based serial cross-sectional seroepidemiological investigation was conducted in five prefectures in December 2021 (pre-Omicron) and February-March 2022 (Omicron [BA.1/BA.2]-peak). Anti-nucleocapsid and anti-spike antibodies were measured to detect infection-induced and vaccine/infection-induced antibodies, respectively. Logistic regression was used to identify associations between various factors and past infection. RESULTS: Among 16 296 participants (median age: 53 [43-64] years), overall prevalence of infection-induced antibodies was 2.2% (95% CI: 1.9-2.5%) in December 2021 and 3.5% (95% CI: 3.1-3.9%) in February-March 2022. Factors associated with past infection included those residing in urban prefectures (Tokyo: aOR 3.37 [95% CI: 2.31-4.91], Osaka: aOR 3.23 [95% CI: 2.17-4.80]), older age groups (60s: aOR 0.47 [95% CI 0.29-0.74], 70s: aOR 0.41 [95% CI 0.24-0.70]), being vaccinated (twice: aOR 0.41 [95% CI: 0.28-0.61], three times: aOR 0.21 [95% CI: 0.12-0.36]), individuals engaged in occupations such as long-term care workers (aOR: 3.13 [95% CI: 1.47-6.66]), childcare workers (aOR: 3.63 [95% CI: 1.60-8.24]), food service workers (aOR: 3.09 [95% CI: 1.50-6.35]), and history of household contact (aOR: 26.4 [95% CI: 20.0-34.8]) or non-household contact (aOR: 5.21 [95% CI:3.80-7.14]) in February-March 2022. Almost all vaccinated individuals (15 670/15 681) acquired binding antibodies with higher titers among booster dose recipients. CONCLUSIONS: Before Omicron, the cumulative burden was >10 times lower in Japan (2.2%) compared with the US (33%), the UK (25%), or global estimates (45%), but most developed antibodies owing to vaccination
