A comprehensive taxonomic study based on comparative morphology of Scorzonera , here maintained in its wide sense, is presented for the territory of Turkey. Tis study has produced several changes of classifcation at sectional and species ranks. An updated list of Scorzonera taxa occurring in Turkey, along with their infrageneric classifcation, is provided. A new section, S. sect. Anatolia Makbul & Coskunç., is described. Chromosome numbers, threat categories, and distribution maps are given for 6 endemic taxa (S. boissieri, S. karabelensis, S. longiana , S. sandrasica , S. ulrichii, and S. zorkunensis) placed in or transferred to the newly described section. A revised identifcation key to all Scorzonera species in Turkey is presented

Epilobium and Chamaenerion included 165 and 8 species over the world, respectively. The members of the genera are distributed particularly in moist habitats from subpolar to tropical regions. This paper aims to provide improvements in the phylogeny of the genera Epilobium and Chamaenerion using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of nuclear DNA and matK gene sequence data evaluation with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference criterations. A total of 188 individual accessions belonging to 28 taxa were newly generated and 110 sequences imported from GenBank (NCBI) were analysed. The nrDNA and plastid DNA gene trees supported to treat Epilobium and Chamaenerion as separate genera in two well-supported clades. The matK analyses revealed a better resolution than nrDNA ITS within the Chamaenerion clade and supported the inclusion of C. angustifolium in the sect. Chamaenerion. However, most of the examined species mostly fell into the polytomy in both trees excluding E. roseum subsp. consimile which should be considered a distinct species in the Epilobium contrary to morphological treatment in many national flora books. Both phylogenetic trees also support distinguishing E. prionophyllum from E. anatolicum previously treated as a subspecies of E. anatolicum. In conclusion, these preliminary phylogenetic analyses have contributed significantly to the determination of the limits of members belonging to Epilobium and Chamaenerion distributed in Turkiye

Coskuncelebi, Kamil/0000-0001-5713-6628;WOS: 000342440900005In this study, pollen grains and anatomical features of Turkish lilies were investigated under the electron (SEM) and light (LM) microscope. LM and SEM observations showed that the pollen grains are monosulcate, heteropolar, elliptical in polar view and oblate. Numerical results based on combined palynological and anatomical characters were discussed and compared with traditional taxonomic treatments. It was found that the midrib shape, mesophyll type, P/E (polar/equatorial), sulcus length, and lumina width are the most valuable traits in separating the examined taxa. the numerical analysis showed that Lilium candidum L. differs from the rest Turkish Lilium and also confirmed a close relationship between L. szovitsianum Fisch. & Av,-Lall. and L. armenum Miscz. ex Grossh. Also this study is the first report dealing with anatomical and palynological features of all Turkish lilies.RUBAP [2009.102.03.4]The authors extend their thanks to RUBAP (Project number 2009.102.03.4) for the financial support

Based on 10 hours of video recordings of 30 Erasmus exchange students, this study aims at uncovering how students who have experienced the Erasmus program talk about European identity in contrast to their national identities in multiparty conversations. The discourse data sets used for the analysis were comprised of (a) incoming European, (b) outgoing Turkish, and (c) mixed (i.e. both incoming and outgoing) Erasmus student conversations. Informed by Social Identity Theory (Tajfel, 1978), the three datasets were analyzed in terms of their indexical inclusive/exclusive pronoun use (i.e., we versus they) and positive/negative evaluation based representation of other at the level of nation. Similar to the other studies in the literature, the analysis shows that while the incoming students use we to refer to Europeans and they to refer to Turkish people by othering them, the outgoing students uses we to refer to Turkish people by excluding themselves from the rest of the Europeans. Besides, general evaluatives used by incoming students about Turkish people were almost always positive while there were evaluatives of both types for different European countries. As a result, the study has revealed that the Erasmus program for outgoing students does not promote the development of a European identity as we-feeling is not reflected in students’ pronoun use and general evaluative terms. However, the program fosters the development of such an identity for incoming Erasmus students as we-feeling (in-groupness; Tajfel, 1978) to refer to Europeans is reflected in their discourse.M.S. - Master of Scienc

Coskuncelebi, Kamil/0000-0001-5713-6628WOS: 000377278600001Macro- and micromorphological features of achenes belonging to 59 taxa from Turkey were observed via light and scanning electron microscopy. the findings agree with the traditional subdivision of Scorzonera into S. subg. Scorzonera, S. subg. Podospermum and S. subg. Pseudopodospermum. Members of S. subg. Podospermum were distinguished by achenes with a distinct carpopodium and horizontally striped epidermal cell surface; members of S. subg. Pseudopodospermum were distinguished by achenes with a conspicuous carpopodium and often ruminate and sometimes rugose-granulate or smooth epidermal surface, and members of Scorzonera s.str were distinguished by achenes without a carpopodium and with various combinations of surface patterns. the results also showed that the length, pubescence and surface pattern of achenes, as well as the carpopodium and anticlinal and periclinal walls of the epidermal cells are valuable for delimiting the examined species within the genus.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [109T972]The authors would like to express their thanks to the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK, Project number: 109T972) for financial support

Coskuncelebi, Kamil/0000-0001-5713-6628WOS: 000417750200002Macro- and micro-morphological features of seeds belonging to 26 taxa from Turkey were observed under the light and scanning electron microscopy. Present findings partly agree with segregation of Epilobium and Chamaenerion at generic level. the members of the genus Epilobium were distinguished by seeds with conical, semispherical, cylindrical or crest-like papillae or without papillae, granulate periclinal surfaces, papillae with parallel, radial, irregular or spirally furrow and the members of Chamaenerion were distinguished by seeds with crest-like papillae or without papillae and without granulate periclinal surfaces and without furrow. the results also showed that seed shape, presence/absence of papillae and beak, papillae shape and ornamentation, and periclinal wall features are valuable for delimiting the examined taxa on specific level within both genera. A key to Turkish Epilobium and Chamaenerion taxa based on seed morphology is presented for the first time.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)Turkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [113Z782]The authors would like to express their thanks to the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK, Project number: 113Z782) for financial support
