First-principles quantum transport modeling of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques in magnetic multilayers
We review a unified approach for computing: (i) spin-transfer torque in
magnetic trilayers like spin-valves and magnetic tunnel junction, where
injected charge current flows perpendicularly to interfaces; and (ii)
spin-orbit torque in magnetic bilayers of the type
ferromagnet/spin-orbit-coupled-material, where injected charge current flows
parallel to the interface. Our approach requires to construct the torque
operator for a given Hamiltonian of the device and the steady-state
nonequilibrium density matrix, where the latter is expressed in terms of the
nonequilibrium Green's functions and split into three contributions. Tracing
these contributions with the torque operator automatically yields field-like
and damping-like components of spin-transfer torque or spin-orbit torque
vector, which is particularly advantageous for spin-orbit torque where the
direction of these components depends on the unknown-in-advance orientation of
the current-driven nonequilibrium spin density in the presence of spin-orbit
coupling. We provide illustrative examples by computing spin-transfer torque in
a one-dimensional toy model of a magnetic tunnel junction and realistic
Co/Cu/Co spin-valve, both of which are described by first-principles
Hamiltonians obtained from noncollinear density functional theory calculations;
as well as spin-orbit torque in a ferromagnetic layer described by a
tight-binding Hamiltonian which includes spin-orbit proximity effect within
ferromagnetic monolayers assumed to be generated by the adjacent monolayer

Diversity of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Strains Isolated from Inpatients of 30 Hospitals in Orange County, California
There is a need for a regional assessment of the frequency and diversity of MRSA to determine major circulating clones and the extent to which community and healthcare MRSA reservoirs have mixed. We conducted a prospective cohort study of inpatients in Orange County, California, systematically collecting clinical MRSA isolates from 30 hospitals, to assess MRSA diversity and distribution. All isolates were characterized by spa typing, with selective PFGE and MLST to relate spa types with major MRSA clones. We collected 2,246 MRSA isolates from hospital inpatients. This translated to 91/10,000 inpatients with MRSA and an Orange County population estimate of MRSA inpatient clinical cultures of 86/100,000 people. spa type genetic diversity was heterogeneous between hospitals, and relatively high overall (72%). USA300 (t008/ST8), USA100 (t002/ST5) and a previously reported USA100 variant (t242/ST5) were the dominant clones across all Orange County hospitals, representing 83% of isolates. Fifteen hospitals isolated more t008 (USA300) isolates than t002/242 (USA100) isolates, and 12 hospitals isolated more t242 isolates than t002 isolates. The majority of isolates were imported into hospitals. Community-based infection control strategies may still be helpful in stemming the influx of traditionally community-associated strains, particularly USA300, into the healthcare setting. © 2013 Hudson et al

Hospital-community interactions foster coexistence between methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in both hospitals and the community. Traditionally, MRSA was mainly hospital-associated (HA-MRSA), but in the past decade community-associated strains (CA-MRSA) have spread widely. CA-MRSA strains seem to have significantly lower biological costs of resistance, and hence it has been speculated that they may replace HA-MRSA strains in the hospital. Such a replacement could potentially have major consequences for public health, as there are differences in the resistance spectra of the two strains as well as possible differences in their clinical effects. Here we assess the impact of competition between HA- and CA-MRSA using epidemiological models which integrate realistic data on drug-usage frequencies, resistance profiles, contact, and age structures. By explicitly accounting for the differing antibiotic usage frequencies in the hospital and the community, we find that coexistence between the strains is a possible outcome, as selection favors CA-MRSA in the community, because of its lower cost of resistance, while it favors HA-MRSA in the hospital, because of its broader resistance spectrum. Incorporating realistic degrees of age- and treatment-structure into the model significantly increases the parameter ranges over which coexistence is possible. Thus, our results indicate that the large heterogeneities existing in human populations make coexistence between hospital- and community-associated strains of MRSA a likely outcome
