The corrosion inhibition of zinc in hydrochloric acid by extract of Nypa Fruticans Wurmb was studied using weight loss techniques. Maximum inhibition efficiency (and surface coverage) was obtained at an optimum concentration. However increase in temperature decreased the inhibition efficiency at the temperature range studied. The inhibition action of Nypa Fruticans Wurmb extract compared closely to that of 1, 5 Diphenyl Carbazone (DPC). Optimum inhibition efficiency for zinc in the presence of Nypa Fruticans Wurmb extract was 36.43% and 40.70% with DPC. The phenomenon of physical adsorption has been proposed from the activation energy values (19.33 kJ mol-1 and 21.11 kJ mol-1) with Nypa Fruticans Wurmb extract and DPC respectively. A first order kinetics has been deduced from the kinetic treatment of the results. The heat of adsorption, Qad range from (-33.63 to - 58.52 kJ mol-1) for both additives studied. Mean \u394G\ub0ads values (-7.82 to 8.68 kJ mol-1) are negative and suggestive of adsorption on metal surface. The data obtained from this study fits well into the Langmuir isotherm. Evidence is hereby provided to show that Nypa Fruticans Wurmb extract and DPC inhibits the corrosion of zinc comparatively @JASE

This research work presents a study on the methanolic and aqueous extracts of corn silk for their corrosion inhibitive effect on mild steel in 0.5M HCl media at 303K, 313K and 323K using the weight loss method. Various concentrations of Corn Silk Methanolic Extract (CSME) and Corn Silk Aqueous Extract (CSAE) (0.1w/v, 0.2w/v, 0.3w/v, 0.4w/v and 0.5w/v) were prepared from the shadow-dried corn silk. Inhibition efficiency of 95.07%, 90.91%, 83.40%; and 79.43%, 72.55%, 66.30% was obtained respectively for CSME and CSAE at 303K, 313K and 323K for the highest concentration of extracts (0.5w/v). The Inhibition efficiency increased with increase in concentration of the extracts and decreased as temperature increased. The results obtained from both extracts were compared and it showed that the methanolic extract was a better inhibitor than the aqueous extract. From this present work, both extracts was shown to be most effective at 303K than at 313K and 323K. It was observed that both extracts inhibited the corrosion of mild steel in acidic media through physical adsorption by forming a barrier on the surface of the metal. Data obtained obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The Kinetic study of the process proposed a first order reaction type. The usefulness of a waste material as corrosion inhibitor is once more reported

This study examined the relevance of adequate teachers in the effective implementation of migrant fisherfolks’ children education programme in Rivers State of Nigeria, The population for the study was made up of all the teachers. All the 179 teachers constituted a sample for the study which is census from the 59 schools. The researchers designed a migrant fisherfolks education questionnaire (MFEQ) for teachers to gather data for the study. The questionnaire consisted of Likert-type items to elicit information. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was ascertained using Pearson Product Moment Correlation which gave the value of 0.92. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were formulated and tested for statistical significance at .05 alpha levels using one-way analysis of variance and chi-square (x2). The results showed that significant relationships exist between adequate teachers, appropriate teaching methods and effective implementation of the education of migrant fisherfolks’ children. Based on these findings, recommendations were proffered which include recruitment of qualified teachers and the use of appropriate teaching methods such as mastery learning approaches and total quality management of learning. Key words: Relevance, Adequate teachers, Effective implementation, Migrant Fisherfolks

Assessment of the larvicidal potentials of thymol derivatives on anopheles mosquitoes

Thymol (1) a major constituent of the South Eastern Nigeria variety of ocimum gratissimum popularly known as nchawu (scent leaf) was converted to its O-methyl (2), O-ethyl (3), acetate (4) and the Benzyloxy (5) derivatives that are characterized by their spectral data such as infra red, proton n.m.r. and mass spectra. Tests on their insecticidal potency show that, like the parent compound thymol (1), they also possess insecticidal properties in decreasing order Benzyloxy > Acetate > O-ethyl > O-methyl. This order is explained partly by the electron withdrawing tendency of the benzyloxy and acetate groups and also that, as the molecular weight of the derivatives increases the solubility decreases. The effect of Nypa fruticans’ wurmb extract and the mixture of various concentration of KI and Nypa fruticans’ wurmb extract on corrosion of mild steel in 0.1M and 0.5M HCl have been investigated using weight loss methods. The study revealed that mild steel is more efficiently inhibited by Nypa fruticans’ wurmb in the presence of KI than pure extract of Nypa fruticans’ wurmb. The inhibition efficiencies increased with increased concentration of the additives. The highest inhibition efficiency of 77.31% was observed with single Nypa fruticans’ wurmb extract. An improved inhibition efficiency of 95.36% was observed with the mixture of Nypa fruticans’ wurmb extract and KI at 30oC in 0.5M HCl. Inhibition efficiency decreased with increase in temperature from 30-40OC but increased at relatively high temperature of 50OC an effect attributed to synergism between Nypa fruticans’ wurmb extract and KI. The adsorption of inhibitor molecules on metal surface followed langmuir isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters such as heat of adsorption, ÄH, free energy of adsorption ÄG and enthropy of adsorption are obtained from experimental temperatures ranging from30 – 50OC

Levels of selected trace metals namely Cadmium, Lead, Nickel and Iron in local and imported brands of rice popularly consumed in Nigeria were investigated to ascertain their toxicity levels in the brands. Lead and Nickel were found to be well above safety levels of 1.5mg/kg and 0.2mg/kg respectively as specified by world health organization (WHO) while all the brands were safe from cadmium and iron toxicity. The results obtained for cadmium were comparable with the findings of other researchers, while our results for Lead, Nickel and Iron were higher than results obtained by other researchers. The local brands’ mean concentration for lead showed 9.5toxicity above safety levels while imported brand showed 4.6 toxicity above safety levels. In the local and foreign rice brand, nickel was found to be 31.2 and 85.8 respectively more toxic relative to accepted safety levels. Regular consumers of rice (local and imported) must be cautious to avoid health challenges associated with Lead and Nickel toxicity. Conversely rice (local and imported) brands need to be fortified with other related food supplement to balance their cadmium and iron deficiency. Keywords: Trace Metals, Toxicity, Rice Brands, Chronic Disease

Phytochemical analysis of the extracts from the leaves of the plant fleabane ( Conyza sumatrensis ) revealed the presence of some substances such as tannins, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and glycosides. The presence of these substances is an indicator of the pharmacological property as well as the nutritive value of the plant leaves. Antimicrobial tests showed that the leaves extract is not sensitive towards the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Staphylococcus aureus , Bacillus spp and Escherichia coli , but inhibited the growth of the fungus Aspergillus niger

Adsorption and corrosion inhibition characteristics of two medicinal molecules

    No full text
The corrosion inhibition characteristics of two medicinal molecules phenylalanine and rutin on mild steel in 1.0M Hydrochloric acid were evaluated using gravimetric method. Corrosion inhibition efficiency of 83.78 and 90.40 % was obtained respectively after seven days. However, phenylalanine showed weak accumulative higher corrosion inhibition efficiency. The presence of both molecules in the corrosive environment reduced the corrosion rate constant and increased the material half-life. Thermodynamic data calculated suggests a spontaneous adsorption of the molecules on the mild steel’s surface
