This chapter presents a detailed description to modeling the ionosphere using the method of computer neural networks and data from the GPS (Global Positioning System). The chapter essentially motivates the use of artificial neural networks for ionospheric modeling, and it presents a detailed description of the processes and considerations involved in using artificial neural networks to model the ionosphere. Specific illustration was done using vertical total electron content (VTEC) data from 14 GPS stations in Nigeria that cover the period from years 2011 to 2016, to develop a neural network model of the GPS-TEC over Nigeria in space and in time. Sample simulations from the developed model shows that the model was accurate in predicting the VTEC variation patterns in terms of diurnal, seasonal, annual, longitudinal and latitudinal variations. A comparative analysis between the neural network predictions and those of other models like the IRI-Plas and NeQuick showed that predictions from the neural network model were predominantly more accurate

AbstractLet K be an algebraically closed field. A K2-system is a pair of K-vector spaces (V, W) together with a K-bilinear map from K2Ă—V to W. The category of systems is equivalent to the category of right modules over some K-algebra, R. Most of the concepts in the theory of modules over the polynomial ring K[Îľ] have analogues in Mod-R. Unlike the purely simple K[Îľ]-modules, which are easily described, purely simple R-modules are quite complex. If M is a purely simple R-module of finite rank n then any submodule of M of rank less than n is finite-dimensional. The following corollaries are derived from this fact: 1.1.|Every non-zero endomorphism of M is monic.2.2.|Every torsion-free quotient of M is purely simple.3.3.|An ascending union of purely simple R-modules of increasing rank is not purely simple. It is also shown that a large class of torsion-free rank one modules can occur as the quotient of a purely simple system of rank n, n any positive integer. Moreover, starting from a purely simple system another purely simple module M' of the same rank is constructed and M' is shown to be both a submodule of M and a submodule of a rank 1 torsion-free system. Since the category of right R-modules is a full subcategory of right S-modules, where S is any finite-dimensional hereditary algebra of tame type, the paper provides a way of constructing infinite-dimensional indecomposable S-modules

Asking for Young Offenders: What is the Fate of Restorative Justice within Nigeria's Discretionary Diversion Policy?

    Get PDF
The young offenders’ justice system in Nigeria represents an area where the law has failed to respond properly to the needs it was designed for. Many empirical studies conducted over 17 years show that young offenders in Nigeria are continuously subjected to the state-sanctioned processes and practices—the formal justice system—which goes against the best interest of the child principle. This is despite the fact that Nigeria has ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and domesticated it through the Child’s Rights Act 2003 (CRA). The problem is that the diversion policy framework under the CRA offers discretionary powers to state officials who drive the formal justice system. This allows these officials to choose whether to divert cases and to select which restorative justice mechanisms to divert to at any level of the young offenders’ justice system. This paper argues that taking away such discretionary powers can help to improve the treatment of young offenders under the Nigerian  criminal justice system. Drawing lessons from New Zealand, this paper suggests, among others, a mandatory diversion policy for a committed practice of juvenile restorative justice in Nigeria

A framework development to predict remaining useful life of a gas turbine mechanical component

Power-by-the-hour is a performance based offering for delivering outstanding service to operators of civil aviation aircraft. Operators need to guarantee to minimise downtime, reduce service cost and ensure value for money which requires an innovative advanced technology for predictive maintenance. Predictability, availability and reliability of the engine offers better service for operators, and the need to estimate the expected component failure prior to failure occurrence requires a proactive approach to predict the remaining useful life of components within an assembly. This research offers a framework for component remaining useful life prediction using assembly level data. The thesis presents a critical analysis on literature identifying the Weibull method, statistical technique and data-driven methodology relating to remaining useful life prediction, which are used in this research. The AS-IS practice captures relevant information based on the investigation conducted in the aerospace industry. The analysis of maintenance cycles relates to the examination of high-level events for engine availability, whereby more communications with industry showcase a through-life performance timeline visualisation. Overhaul sequence and activities are presented to gain insights of the timeline visualisation. The thesis covers the framework development and application to gas turbine single stage assembly, repair and replacement of components in single stage assembly, and multiple stage assembly. The framework is demonstrated in aerospace engines and power generation engines. The framework developed enables and supports domain experts to quickly respond to, and prepare for maintenance and on-time delivery of spare parts. The results of the framework show the probability of failure based on a pair of error values using the corresponding Scale and Shape parameters. The probability of failure is transformed into the remaining useful life depicting a typical Weibull distribution. The resulting Weibull curves developed with three scenarios of the case shows there are components renewals, therefore, the remaining useful life of the components are established. The framework is validated and verified through a case study with three scenarios and also through expert judgement

Overview of Remaining Useful Life prediction techniques in Through-life Engineering Services

    Get PDF
Through-life Engineering Services (TES) are essential in the manufacture and servicing of complex engineering products. TES improves support services by providing prognosis of run-to-failure and time-to-failure on-demand data for better decision making. The concept of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) is utilised to predict life-span of components (of a service system) with the purpose of minimising catastrophic failure events in both manufacturing and service sectors. The purpose of this paper is to identify failure mechanisms and emphasise the failure events prediction approaches that can effectively reduce uncertainties. It will demonstrate the classification of techniques used in RUL prediction for optimisation of products’ future use based on current products in-service with regards to predictability, availability and reliability. It presents a mapping of degradation mechanisms against techniques for knowledge acquisition with the objective of presenting to designers and manufacturers ways to improve the life-span of components

The English in Ghana: British, American or Hybrid English?

    Get PDF
As a result of colonization of the British, the English used in many African countries and for that matter Ghana, is the British standard variety. However, the English used in Ghana, appears to have been invaded by the American English. This poses a problem as both teachers and students especially at the senior high school level confuse themselves about which word or spelling is right and vice versa. This study thus seeks to investigate students’ awareness of this invasion, the extent of the invasion and also to ascertain which of the aspects of the language has been much influenced by the American variety. The underpinning framework for this study is Kachru’s (1985) concentric model to situate the type of English used in Ghana. A sample size of 100 Students of English Education Department of University of Education, Winneba was selected for the study. The data was a secondary one: a random collection of vocabulary. Test, interview and questionnaire were also employed to gather other related data for the study. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to analyse the data with precedence on qualitative analysis and the findings were thematically presented. The results indicate that although students use both American and British English together, they have little knowledge about the differences between them, especially, with the vocabulary aspect. Students have fair knowledge about the differences between the two varieties as regards the orthography aspect. These findings have implications on the teaching of English language and on examination issues in the country. It also informs writers of various educational materials about what variety to use
