    Investigation of localized deformation in partially saturated sand under triaxial compression using microfocus X-ray CT with digital image correlation

    AbstractIn this paper, localized deformation in partially saturated sand was investigated quantitatively using microfocus X-ray computed tomography (CT) and an image analysis of the CT images. Triaxial compression tests on a partially saturated dense Toyoura sand specimen were carried out under a low confining pressure and under drained conditions for both air and water. The development of localized deformation was observed macroscopically using microfocus X-ray CT, and the displacement field over the entire specimen was quantified by an image analysis of the CT images with the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The progressive development of shear bands is discussed with reference to these images. In addition, the region of localization was observed microscopically by partial CT scanning on a micron scale with high spatial resolution. Changes in the particulate structures are also discussed herein. The DIC image analysis of the partial CT images provided a microscopic displacement field and indicated that very fine localized shear deformation developed before the shear bands had become visible in the macroscopic investigation

    Antioxidant Activity and Oxidation Products of 1,2,3,4- Tetrahydroquinoxalines in Peroxyl Radical Scavenging Reactions, Part I

    This paper studies the antioxidant activity of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines, 3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]thiazines and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines in the inhibition of the peroxidation of tetralin induced by an azo initiator. Neither 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroquinoline nor 3,4-dihydro-2H-benzo[1,4]thiazine alone acted as an antioxidant, but when they have an electron-donating group at the para position to the NH group, they act as potent antioxidants. On the other hand, 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroquinoxaline on its own showed good antioxidant activity. However, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines with methyl and methoxy groups in the phenyl ring have reactivities similar to or less than that of unsubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline. The induction periods of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines with an alkyl group or phenyl group at the 2-position were all longer than the value for the unsubstituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline, except for a compound with a t-butyl group. The oxidation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalines by peroxyl radicals generated from an azo initiator in tetralin or benzene yields quinoxalines and a dimer product of quinoxalines, 6-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxalin-1-yl)-quinoxaline

    Roles of dynamical symmetry breaking in driving oblate-prolate transitions of atomic clusters

    This paper explores the driving mechanisms for structural transitions of atomic clusters between oblate and prolate isomers. We employ the hyperspherical coordinates to investigate structural dynamics of a seven-atom cluster at a coarse-grained level in terms of the dynamics of three gyration radii and three principal axes, which characterize overall mass distributions of the cluster. Dynamics of gyration radii is governed by two kinds of forces. One is the potential force originating from the interactions between atoms. The other is the dynamical forces called the internal centrifugal forces, which originate from twisting and shearing motions of the system. The internal centrifugal force arising from twisting motions has an effect of breaking the symmetry between two gyration radii. As a result, in an oblate isomer, activation of the internal centrifugal force that has the effect of breaking the symmetry between the two largest gyration radii is crucial in triggering structural transitions into prolate isomers. In a prolate isomer, on the other hand, activation of the internal centrifugal force that has the effect of breaking the symmetry between the two smallest gyration radii is crucial in triggering structural transitions into oblate isomers. Activation of a twisting motion that switches the movement patterns of three principal axes is also important for the onset of structural transitions between oblate and prolate isomers. Based on these trigger mechanisms, we finally show that selective activations of specific gyration radii and twisting motions, depending on the isomer of the cluster, can effectively induce structural transitions of the cluster. The results presented here could provide further insights into the control of molecular reactions

    Dynamics of light-induced anomalous Hall effect in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3_3As2_2

    We experimentally study the dynamical behavior of the light-induced anomalous Hall effect in a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, Cd3_3As2_2. An ultrashort, circularly polarized, multi-terahertz pump pulse breaks the time-reversal symmetry of a thin film sample. The resulting anomalous Hall effect is clearly observed through the polarization rotation of a single-cycle terahertz probe pulse. Comparing the experimental result with theory, we find that the field-induced injection current dominates the anomalous Hall effect during pump irradiation, while the Berry curvature of the Floquet-Weyl semimetal state does not appreciably contribute. Remarkably, even after pump irradiation, we observe an anomalous Hall effect that lasts for more than 10 ps. A model fit to the Hall conductivity spectrum reveals a relatively long scattering time over 400 fs. This result shows that circularly polarized light creates a polarization of the isospin degree of freedom in the Dirac semimetal, which labels the crystallographic point group representation of the overlapping Weyl semimetal bands. Our observation paves the way for conversion of a robust isospin flow into an electric current at room temperature, being a new analogue of the inverse spin Hall effect.Comment: 44 pages, 14 figure

    Inhibition of microRNA-33b in humanized mice ameliorates nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

Here, we show that microRNA (miR)-33b in hepatocytes is critical for the development of NASH. miR-33b is located in the intron of sterol regulatory element–binding transcription factor 1 and is abundantly expressed in humans, but absent in rodents. miR-33b knock-in (KI) mice, which have a miR-33b sequence in the same intron of sterol regulatory element–binding transcription factor 1 as humans and express miR-33b similar to humans, exhibit NASH under high-fat diet feeding. This condition is ameliorated by hepatocyte-specific miR-33b deficiency but unaffected by macrophage-specific miR-33b deficiency. Anti-miR-33b oligonucleotide improves the phenotype of NASH in miR-33b KI mice fed a Gubra Amylin NASH diet, which induces miR-33b and worsens NASH more than a high-fat diet. Anti-miR-33b treatment reduces hepatic free cholesterol and triglyceride accumulation through up-regulation of the lipid metabolism–related target genes. Furthermore, it decreases the expression of fibrosis marker genes in cultured hepatic stellate cells. Thus, inhibition of miR-33b using nucleic acid medicine is a promising treatment for NASH

    Association between knee function and kinesiophobia 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

    [Purpose] Kinesiophobia after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction has been identified as an inhibitor of return to sports. This study aimed to clarify the relationship between kinesiophobia and knee function 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction when the patient intends to return to sports. [Participants and Methods] A total of 66 patients who underwent primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (mean age 17.3 ± 2.6 years, 17 males and 49 females, Tegner activity score ≥7) were included in the study. The 11-item version of Tampa scale of kinesiophobia was used to evaluate kinesiophobia 6 months postoperatively. Knee function was evaluated with knee extension muscle strength, tibial anterior displacement, heel buttock distance, heel height difference, anterior knee pain score, and single-leg hop test. The relationship between Tampa scale of kinesiophobia, patient characteristics, and knee function was investigated. [Results] A low Anterior knee pain score and low single-leg hop test, male gender, and age were significant factors associated with kinesiophobia. [Conclusion] Kinesiophobia was associated with a low anterior knee pain score and low single-leg hop test 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Patients with a low single-leg hop test score or severe pain may need rehabilitation to reduce kinesiophobia.journal articl

    Differences in K-ras and mitochondrial DNA mutations and microsatellite instability between colorectal cancers of Vietnamese and Japanese patients

    [Background]:The incidence of early-onset (under 50 years of age) colorectal cancer (CRC) in the Vietnamese has been reported to be quite higher than that in the Japanese. To clarify the differences in genetic alterations between Vietnamese and Japanese CRCs, we investigated mutations in K-ras and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and high-frequency microsatellite instability (MSI-H) in the CRCs of Vietnamese and Japanese patients. [Methods]:We enrolled 60 Vietnamese and 233 Japanese patients with invasive CRCs. DNA was extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. K-ras mutations were examined with PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis. mtDNA mutations and MSI-H were examined with microsatellite analysis using D310 and BAT-26, respectively. [Results]:K-ras mutations were examined in 60 Vietnamese and 45 Japanese CRCs. The frequency of the mutations in the Vietnamese CRCs was significantly higher than that in the Japanese CRCs (8 of 24 [33%] vs 5 of 45 [11%], p =0.048). MSI-H was examined in 60 Vietnamese and 130 Japanese CRCs. The frequency of MSI-H in the Vietnamese CRCs was also significantly higher than that in the Japanese CRCs (6 of 27 [22%] vs 10 of 130 [8%], p =0.030). mtDNA mutations were examined in 60 Vietnamese and 138 Japanese CRCs. The frequency of mtDNA mutations in the Vietnamese CRCs was significantly higher than that in the Japanese CRCs (19 of 44 [43%] vs 11 of 133 [9%], p <0.001). There were no significant differences in clinicopathologic characteristics, such as age, sex, tumour location, and depth, in terms of tumours with/without each genetic alteration in the CRCs of the Vietnamese and Japanese patients. [Conclusions]:These results indicate that the developmental pathways of CRCs in the Vietnamese may differ from those of CRCs in the Japanese
