On-board appendages with mechanical moving parts for satellites produce undesirable micro-jitters during their on-orbit operation. These micro-jitters may seriously affect the image quality from high-resolution observation satellites. A new application form of a passive vibration isolation system was proposed and investigated using a pseudoelastic SMA mesh washer. This system guarantees vibration isolation performance in a launch environment while effectively isolating the micro-disturbances from the on-orbit operation of jitter source. The main feature of the isolator proposed in this study is the use of a ring-type mesh washer as the main axis to support the micro-jitter source. This feature contrasts with conventional applications of the mesh washers where vibration damping is effective only in the thickness direction of the mesh washer. In this study, the basic characteristics of the SMA mesh washer isolator in each axis were measured in static tests. The effectiveness of the design for the new application form of the SMA mesh washer proposed in this study was demonstrated through both launch environment vibration test at qualification level and micro-jitter measurement test which corresponds to on-orbit condition

GAIT ASYMMETRY IN CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME

It has been reported that approximately 80% of children with Down syndrome (OS) exhibit gait problems (Matteo, 2002), characterized by flat-footed contact with no heel-strike, excessive abduction of the leg in the swing phase, and abnormal knee and hip f1exions throughout the gait cycle (Parker et aI., 1986). Due to muscle hypotonia, muscle weakness, !igamentous laXity, and other orthopedic abnormalities, different gait characteristics exist. The purpose of this study was to investigate the gait (walking and running) asymmetry in children with OS

Strong evidence for ideomotor theory: Unwilled manifestation of the conceptual attribute in movement control

Scientific understanding of how the mind generates bodily actions remains opaque. In the early 19th century, the ideomotor theory proposed that humans generate voluntary actions by imagining the sensory consequence of those actions, implying that the idea of an actionā€™s consequence mediates between the intention to act and motor control. Despite its long history and theoretical importance, existing empirical evidence for the ideomotor theory is not strong enough to rule out alternative hypotheses. In this study, we devised a categorization-action task to evaluate ideomotor theory by testing whether an idea, distinguished from a stimulus, can modulate task-irrelevant movements. In Experiment 1, participants categorized a stimulus duration as long or short by pressing an assigned key. The results show that participants pressed the key longer when categorizing the stimulus as long than they did when characterizing it as short. In Experiment 2, we showed that the keypressing durations were not modulated by the decision category when the property of the decision category, the brightness of a stimulus, was not easily transferable to the action. In summary, our results suggest that while the perceived stimulus features have a marginal effect on response duration linearly, the decision category is the main factor affecting the response duration. Our results indicate that an abstract category attribute can strongly modulate action execution, constraining theoretical conjectures about the ideomotor account of how people voluntarily generate action

Dark Matter Deficient Galaxies Produced via High-velocity Galaxy Collisions in High-resolution Numerical Simulations

Abstract The recent discovery of diffuse dwarf galaxies that are deficient in dark matter appears to challenge the current paradigm of structure formation in our universe. We describe numerical experiments to determine if so-called dark matter deficient galaxies (DMDGs) could be produced when two gas-rich, dwarf-sized galaxies collide with a high relative velocity of āˆ¼300 km sāˆ’1. Using idealized high-resolution simulations with both mesh-based and particle-based gravito-hydrodynamics codes, we find that DMDGs can form as high-velocity galaxy collisions and separate dark matter from the warm disk gas, which subsequently is compressed by shock and tidal interaction to form stars. Then using the large simulated universe IllustrisTNG, we discover a number of high-velocity galaxy collision events in which DMDGs are expected to form. However, we did not find evidence that these types of collisions actually produced DMDGs in the TNG100-1 run. We argue that the resolution of the numerical experiment is critical to realizing the ā€œcollision-inducedā€ DMDG formation scenario. Our results demonstrate one of many routes in which galaxies could form with unconventional dark matter fractions.</jats:p

Therapeutic effects of phlorotannins in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders

    Get PDF
Phlorotannins are natural polyphenolic compounds produced by brown marine algae and are currently found in nutritional supplements. Although they are known to cross the bloodā€“brain barrier, their neuropharmacological actions remain unclear. Here we review the potential therapeutic benefits of phlorotannins in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In mouse models of Alzheimerā€™s disease, ethanol intoxication and fear stress, the phlorotannin monomer phloroglucinol and the compounds eckol, dieckol and phlorofucofuroeckol A have been shown to improve cognitive function. In a mouse model of Parkinsonā€™s disease, phloroglucinol treatment led to improved motor performance. Additional neurological benefits associated with phlorotannin intake have been demonstrated in stroke, sleep disorders, and pain response. These effects may stem from the inhibition of disease-inducing plaque synthesis and aggregation, suppression of microglial activation, modulation of pro-inflammatory signaling, reduction of glutamate-induced excitotoxicity, and scavenging of reactive oxygen species. Clinical trials of phlorotannins have not reported significant adverse effects, suggesting these compounds to be promising bioactive agents in the treatment of neurological diseases. We therefore propose a putative biophysical mechanism of phlorotannin action in addition to future directions for phlorotannin research

A Brand Loyalty Model Utilitizing Team Identification and Customer Satisfaction in the Licensed Sports Product Industry

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among the attitudinal brand loyalty variables (i.e., cognitive, affective, and conative components), team identification, and customer satisfaction by developing a structural equation model, based on Oliver's (1997) attitudinal brand loyalty model. The results of this study confirmed the study of brand loyalty stages by Oliver (1997) involving development of a brand loyalty process. Results supported the finding that consumers' strong beliefs about brand quality have increased the degree of "liking". In turn, results indicate a positive intention or commitment to repurchase a particular item. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of measuring attitudinal brand loyalty to identify attitudinal brand loyal customers and better understand their repurchasing intentions in the sports licensed product industry. Furthermore, this study showed the significant mediating effect of cognitive and affective brand loyalty in the relationship between customer satisfaction and conative brand loyalty

Distributed estimation of stochastic multiagent systems for cooperative control with a virtual network

    Get PDF
This article proposes a distributed estimation algorithm that uses local information about the neighbors through sensing or communication to design an estimation-based cooperative control of the stochastic multiagent system (MAS). The proposed distributed estimation algorithm solely relies on local sensing information rather than exchanging estimated state information from other agents, as is commonly required in conventional distributed estimation methods, reducing communication overhead. Furthermore, the proposed method allows interactions between all agents, including non-neighboring agents, by establishing a virtual fully connected network with the MAS state information independently estimated by each agent. The stability of the proposed distributed estimation algorithm is theoretically verified. Numerical simulations demonstrate the enhanced performance of the estimation-based linear and nonlinear control. In particular, using the virtual fully connected network concept in the MAS with the sensing/communication range, the flock configuration can be tightly controlled within the desired boundary, which cannot be achieved through the conventional flocking methods

Disease Prevalence and Mortality among Agricultural Workers in Korea

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of mortality and disease prevalence related to occupational diseases among agricultural workers in Korea. We evaluated the age-standardized mortality rates and the prevalence of chronic diseases and compared them with those of other populations using death registration data from 2004 through 2008 and the 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In addition, we conducted a literature review on published articles examining the health status of farmers in Korea. Agricultural workers have a significantly higher mortality of cancer, tuberculosis, chronic respiratory diseases, liver diseases, suicide, motor and non-motor vehicle accidents. Compared to other populations, farmers have higher prevalence rates of arthritis and intervertebral disc disorders. The literature review revealed a number of work-related diseases among farmers, such as musculoskeletal diseases, pesticide poisoning, infections, and respiratory and neurologic diseases. Korean farmers demonstrate a distinct pattern of mortality and disease prevalence compared to other populations. Although lifestyle factors remain important contributors to those deaths and diseases, our study suggests that occupation is a major determinant as well. Intensive programs such as surveillance systems, therefore, should be developed in order to identify and prevent work-related diseases among agricultural workers in Korea

THE EFFECTS OF WHEELCHAIR CAMBER AND HANDRIM SIZE IN WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL MOVEMENT

    Get PDF
Improving the wheelchair design can be an important determinant of high performance in the wheelchair basketball. Researchers have focused on increasing the efficiency of the wheelchair, looking at the factors such as the seat position, handrim size, and wheel camber. Most handrim and wheel chamber studies, however, have focused only on the propulsive phase. Quick turn as well as fast propulsion is essential to the success in a wheelchair basketball game and the energy efficiency becomes particularly important in a prolonged wheelchair use. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of wheelchair camber and handrim size on the linear propulsion, turn velocity, and efficiency
