This research presents the overview of the origin of fingerprint biometric technology, the opinion of the public on the acceptance of fingerprint biometric technology and the means of instilling confidence on the public for the total acceptance of the technology.  Data was collected with the aid of a lecture and structured questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents in NewLine Computer training Center Ltd. Abakpa. There were lectures and interviews conducted by the researcher and questionnaires completion by the selected population of 50 people comprising of age between 18 and 65 years. The 50 people consist of individuals from education, technology and government organisations.   The organisation was done by the Researchers and three members of staff of NewLine Computer training Center Ltd. Abakpa Nike Enugu. The lectures enlightened the 50 participants/respondents that fingerprint is a discontinuous variation and that no two persons have exactly the same fingerprint. The study revealed that it is obvious that confidence will be instilled in the public if there is public enlightenment as the number of respondents who believe that fingerprint cannot be stolen or copied is 92% although 8% of the respondents is still biased after the lectures. The research will instil confidence in the use of fingerprint biometric technology and will break the shackles of currently being a misunderstood novelty to a widespread, mainstream personal identity authentication tool. This study investigated the underlying factors that influence potential TVET teachers' decision to pursue a teaching career in order to recruit more teachers. The motivation of pre-service TVET graduates obtaining a postgraduate diploma in technical education was therefore investigated using the QUAN-QUAL approach to collect quantitative data via a researcher-created, self-administered questionnaire and qualitative data via written essays and narratives using the triangulation mixed method design. Participants were selected from two cohorts (N=78) of students enrolled in the various departments for the Postgraduate Diploma in Technical Education (PGDTE) program of the University of Nigeria. According to the quantitative analysis, excellent role models from previous teachers, the demanding nature of the job role, a willingness to impart relevant knowledge and skills, a willingness to assist financially disadvantaged students in gaining marketable job skills, and the country's presumed demand for TVET teachers were the primary motivators for pre-service teachers. The qualitative analysis found seven (7) themes, three of which were motivational: desire to assist students and community/sharing expertise; personal dream/calling/passion to teach; and the desire to financially aid students who are incapacitated. However, the gender aspect revealed that male and female pre-service TVET teachers showed significant differences in their altruistic and intrinsic impulses. Following that, the two sets of data were compared and investigated. The ramifications of the findings were then examined, as well as their significance in enhancing hiring measures through setting of standards for tech-voc education programs to improve on the status of TVET teachers to attract quality graduates of technical education programs who can teach as TVET teachers before and after completing their programs

Investigating the Dynamic Link between External Reserves and Monetary Variables in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country whose revenue base is woven around the oil sector. Consequently, any shock to the international price of oil definitely affects the reserve position of the country. Our major motivation for this study is therefore anchored on the volatile nature of the country’s reserves and how domestic monetary variables respond to shocks in the external reserves as well as possible reverse responses of external reserves to changes in monetary variables. Using monthly series over a period of 2007-2019 and under the framework of the VAR, our findings revealed a dynamic relationship that exists between external reserves and monetary variables in Nigeria. That is, as monetary variables responded to shocks in external reserves, a reverse response was also noticed running from external reserves to changes in monetary variables. The impact of oil to the economy was exhibited in the result as external reserves responded positively to oil price shocks; thus showing the importance of the oil sector to the country’s reserve position. We therefore recommend that a synergy should exist between monetary and fiscal authorities in order to neutralize the destabilizing effect of unsustainable increase in reserve inflows and to diversify the economy away from the oil sector to reduce volatility in reserves inflows

Does Sterilization Policy Exert an Upward Pressure on Interest Rate as Dictated by Theory? A Nigerian Example

The implications of capital inflows on the economy and the fall out of the policy geared towards addressing these phenomena, especially the impact of the policy on interest rate motivated us in this study. Under the framework of ARDL and using monthly series over a period of 2010M1-2021M3, our findings showed that in the short-run, sterilization policy leads to rising interest rate in the current period. However, after a lag, sterilization policy depresses interest rate. We equally found that in the long-run, sterilization policy pushes interest rate up. In another direction, we observed a negative relationship between money supply and interest rate both in the short-run and in the long-run and the exogenous variables in the model influence interest rate significantly. We therefore recommend that different measures should be adopted to cushion the effect of unsustainable capital inflows to avoid repeated need for further sterilization and the increasing cost of sterilization in the long-run. It is also our advice that exogenous variables should be factored in when fashioning out a desirable interest rate in line with economic reality

© 2020 The Author(s) Female genital mutilation/cutting FGM/C is the process of removing part or all of the female external genitalia. Twenty-nine countries are known to be FGM/C prevalent. The prevalent countries are mostly in Sub Saharan Africa, Middle East, and Asia. FGM/C prevalence countries have total high fertility rate (TFR), high maternal mortality ratio (MMR), low female life expectancy (LEF) and high birth rate (BR). This paper extracted the TFR, MMR, LEF, and BR of FGM/C prevalent countries from each metric's comprehensive databases. Correlation analysis was used to find links between FGM/C and the four health metrics. There is a significant negative correlation between TFR and the duo of LEF and BR, which implies that having more children reduces women's life expectancy and FGM/C prevalent countries. The average TFR, MMR, LEF and BR for the 29 countries are 4.44 children, 517.24 deaths per 10,000, 63.03 years, and 33.83 per 1000 population. Behavioral change and maternal education are recommended to change the religious and cultural view of female sexuality and reduce FGM/C prevalence

    Get PDF
Background: Awareness and knowledge can play key roles in influencing the utilization of health insurance programs in Nigeria. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the awareness and use of the Tertiary Institutions/Voluntary Participant Social Health Insurance Program (TISHIP) for undergraduate dental services.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria and the study population comprised full-time undergraduate students of the institution with a total sample size of 400.Results: Majority (66.7%) of the respondents were aware of the TISHIP, but 37% were aware that it covered dental treatments, and 16.1% had received dental treatment under TISHIP. Fifty point eight percent (50.8%) of the respondents were not registered under the insurance program. The reason respondents had not registered was because majority (49.7%) were not aware of the compulsory registration into the scheme. Respondents agreed that TISHIP would promote equity in healthcare delivery (57.5%), promote improved health facilities (39.4%), and 52.5% were willing to participate in the scheme while 47.9% were undecided on whether TISHIP was worth the financial contribution. Presumed high cost of dental treatment (51.9%) and non-availability of materials for dental treatment at dental facilities (50.8%) were factors that affected the utilization of TISHIP (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Despite the positive effect of TISHIP in cushioning the cost of dental care, utilization is poor, thus there is a need to scale up awareness among the students’ population

THE ROLE OF ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS

    Get PDF
Abstract An institution cannot exist and function properly without the presence of a library because the services provided by an academic library reflect the quality of the institution. This paper attempts to present a brief overview of the concept of library, research data, Research Data Management (RDM) and its constraints as well as the roles of academic libraries. These roles has experienced new paradigm shift, unprecedented reshaping and alterations as a result of emerging waves of information communication technology (ICT) and its accompanying sustainable and disruptive technologies. Scholars are now producing, storing and disseminating digital data in much larger volumes than the text. The continued existence and access of this data is an issue, since the data is not stored in libraries. It is therefore crucial to preserve data for future generations. This paper tries to delineate the emerging role of academic libraries in Research Data Management (RDM) in tertiary institutions
