On the equation of state of a dense columnar liquid crystal
An accurate description of a columnar liquid crystal of hard disks at high
packing fractions is presented using an improved free-volume theory. It is
shown that the orientational entropy of the disks in the one-dimensional fluid
direction leads to a different high-density scaling pressure compared to the
prediction from traditional cell theory. Excellent quantitative agreement is
found with recent Monte-Carlo simulation results for various thermodynamic and

Differential Cyclic Voltammetry - a Novel Technique for Selective and Simultaneous Detection using Redox Cycling Based Sensors
Redox cycling (RC) is an effect that is used to amplify electrochemical signals. However, traditional techniques such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) do not provide clear insight for a mixture of multiple redox couples while RC is applied. Thus, we have developed a new measurement technique which delivers electrochemical spectra of all reversible redox couples present based on concentrations and standard potentials. This technique has been named differential cyclic voltammetry (DCV). We have fabricated micrometer-sized interdigitated electrode (IDE) sensors to conduct DCV measurements in mixtures of 1mM catechol and 4mM [Ru(NH3)6]Cl3. To simulate the electrochemical behavior of these sensors we have also developed a finite element model (FEM) in Comsol®. The\ud
experimental data corresponds to the calculated spectra obtained from simulations. Additionally, the measured spectra can be used to easily derive standard potentials and concentrations simultaneously and selectively.\u

A closed form for the electrostatic interaction between two rod-like charged objects
We have calculated the electrostatic interaction between two rod-like charged
objects with arbitrary orientations in three dimensions. we obtained a closed
form formula expressing the interaction energy in terms of the separation
distance between the centers of the two rod-like objects, , their lengths
(denoted by and ), and their relative orientations (indicated by
and ). When the objects have the same length (),
for particular values of separations, i.e for , two types of
minimum are appeared in the interaction energy with respect to . By
employing the closed form formula and introducing a scaled temperature , we
have also studied the thermodynamic properties of a one dimensional system of
rod-like charged objects. For different separation distances, the dependence of
the specific heat of the system to the scaled temperature has been studied. It

Buckling instability for a charged and fluctuating semiflexible polymer
In this article we address the problem of Euler's buckling instability in a
charged semi-flexible polymer that is under the action of a compressive force.
We consider this instability as a phase transition and investigate the role of
thermal fluctuations in the buckling critical force. By performing molecular
dynamic simulations, we show that the critical force decreases when the
temperature increases. Repulsive electrostatic interaction in the finite
temperature is in competition with thermal fluctuations to increase the
buckling threshold
Fluid-crystal coexistence for proteins and inorganic nanocolloids: dependence on ionic strength
We investigate theoretically the fluid-crystal coexistence of solutions of
globular charged nanoparticles like proteins and inorganic colloids. The
thermodynamic properties of the fluid phase are computed via the optimized
Baxter model. This is done specifically for lysozyme and silicotungstates for
which the bare adhesion parameters are evaluated via the experimental second
virial coefficients. The electrostatic free energy of the crystal is
approximated by supposing the cavities in the interstitial phase between the
particles are spherical in form. In the salt-free case a Poisson-Boltzmann
equation is solved to calculate the effective charge on a particle and a Donnan
approximation is used to derive the chemical potential and osmotic pressure in
the presence of salt. The coexistence data of lysozyme and silicotungstates are
analyzed within this scheme, especially with regard to the ionic-strength
dependence of the chemical potentials. The latter agree within the two phases
provided some upward adjustment of the effective charge is allowed for.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
Creating a Language Archive of Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea
The geographical region of Insular South East Asia and New Guinea is well-known as an area of mega-biodiversity. Less well-known is the extreme linguistic diversity in this area: over a quarter of the world’s 6,000 languages are spoken here. As small minority languages, most of them will cease to be spoken in the coming few generations. The project described here ensures the preservation of unique records of languages and the cultures encapsulated by them in the region. The language resources were gathered by twenty linguists at, or in collaboration with, Dutch universities over the last 40 years, and were compiled and archived in collaboration with The Language Archive (TLA) at the Max Planck Institute in Nijmegen. The resulting archive constitutes a collection ofmultimediamaterials and written documents from 48 languages in Insular South East Asia and West New Guinea. At TLA, the data was archived according to state-of-the-art standards (TLA holds the Data Seal of Approval): the component metadata infrastructure CMDI was used; all metadata categories as well as relevant units of annotation were linked to the ISO data category registry ISOcat. This guaranteed proper integration of the language resources into the CLARIN framework. Through the archive, future speaker communities and researchers will be able to extensively search thematerials for answers to their own questions, even if they do not themselves know the language, and even if the language dies
The relationships between accessibility and crash risk from social equity perspectives: A case study at the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan region
Traflic safety and accessibility have been two important subjects in transportation research. On the one hand traffic crashes bring about high societal costs and serious health risks for urban road users. The cost oftraffic crashes is estimated to be 17 billion euros per year only in the Netherlands while over 600 people were killed in traffic, of whom 229 were cyclists and 195 were car users [l, 2]. Accessibility, on the other band, is regarded as one of the indicators of the quality of the transport system serving the public. There is comprehensive literature investigating the relationship between traffic crashes and factors associated with traffic, roadway design, built environment, and human factors. Similarly, several studies assessed and evaluated accessibility levels of individuals, communities, and regions by utilizing the aforementioned. factors. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity ofliterature investigating the relationships between accessibility and traffic safety. This is especially surprising considering that both subjects are associated with a similar set of factors, including land use and transport systems, as weil as individual and temporal factors [3-7]. The relationships between accessibility and
traffic safety can be an adverse one; for example, improved accessibility by increasing the travel speeds (i.e., declining travel time) intensifies the crash risks which also deteriorates equity. Furthermore, levels ofboth accessibility and traffic safety are not homogeneous throughout urban areas and among different population groups. Based on the literature, it is obvious that accessibility is associated with economic equity [8]. lt is revealed that accessibility of lower-income groups is substantially worse than the higher-income groups as these groups have less mobility [9]. Previous studies also showed. that lower-income groups usually suffer from traffic safety problems more than other socio-economic groups [10-12]. Therefore, this research aims to address the aforementioned gap in the literature in understanding the relationships between accessibility levels and traffic safety with a focus on social equity perspecti.ves.
