Segmentation of orbital and periorbital lesions detected in orbital magnetic resonance imaging by deep learning method
Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has a special place in the evaluation of orbital and periorbital lesions. Segmentation is one of the deep learning methods. In this study, we aimed to perform segmentation in orbital and periorbital lesions. Material and methods: Contrast-enhanced orbital MRIs performed between 2010 and 2019 were retrospectively screened, and 302 cross-sections of contrast-enhanced, fat-suppressed, T1-weighted, axial MRI images of 95 patients obtained using 3 T and 1.5 T devices were included in the study. The dataset was divided into 3: training, test, and validation. The number of training and validation data was increased 4 times by applying data augmentation (horizontal, vertical, and both). Pytorch UNet was used for training, with 100 epochs. The intersection over union
(IOU) statistic (the Jaccard index) was selected as 50%, and the results were calculated. Results: The 77th epoch model provided the best results: true positives, 23; false positives, 4; and false negatives, 8. The precision, sensitivity, and F1 score were determined as 0.85, 0.74, and 0.79, respectively. Conclusions: Our study proved to be successful in segmentation by deep learning method. It is one of the pioneering
studies on this subject and will shed light on further segmentation studies to be performed in orbital MR images
SUCCESS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM IN DETERMINING ALVEOLAR BONE LOSS FROM DENTAL PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPHY IMAGES
Objectives: The aim of this study was to detect alveolar bone loss from dental panoramic radiographic images using artificial intelligence systems.
Material and Methods: A total of 2276 panoramic radiographic images were used in this study. While 1137 of them belong to cases with bone destruction, 1139 were periodontally healthy. The dataset is divided into three parts as training (n=1856) , validation (n=210) and testing set (n= 210). All images in the data set were resized to 1472x718 pixels before training. A random sequence was created using the open-source python programming language and OpenCV, NumPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib libraries effectively. A pre-trained Google Net Inception v3 CNN network was used for preprocessing and data sets were trained using transfer learning. Diagnostic performance was evaluated with the confusion matrix using sensivitiy, specificity, precision, accuracy and F1 score.
Results: Of the 105 cases with bone loss, 99 were detected by the AI system. Sensitivity was 0.94, specificity 0.88, precision 0.89, accuracy 0.91 and F1 score 0.91.
Conclusion: The convolutional neural network model is successful in determining periodontal bone losses. It can be used as a system to facilitate the work of physicians in diagnosis and treatment planning in the future

Is second-line systemic chemotherapy beneficial in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)? A multicenter data evaluation by the Anatolian Society of Medical Oncology
Patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) generally require second-line treatment although their prognosis is poor. In this multicenter study, we aimed to detect the characteristics related to patients and disease that can predict the response to second-line treatments in advanced NSCLC. Data of 904 patients who have progressed after receiving first-line platinum-based chemotherapy in 11 centers with the diagnosis of stage IIIB and IV NSCLC and who were evaluated for second-line treatment were retrospectively analyzed. The role of different factors in determining the benefit of second-line treatment was analyzed. Median age of patients was 57 years (range 19-86). Docetaxel was the most commonly used (20.9 %, n = 189) single agent, while gemcitabine-platinum was the most commonly used (6.7 %, n = 61) combination chemotherapy regimen in second-line setting. According to survival analysis, median progression-free survival after first-line treatment (PFS2) was 3.5 months (standard error (SE) 0.2; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 3.2-3.9), median overall survival (OS) was 6.7 months (SE 0.3; 95 % CI, 6.0-7.3). In multivariate analysis, independent factors affecting PFS2 were found to be hemoglobin (Hb) level over 12 g/dl and treatment-free interval (TFI) longer than 3 months (p = 0.006 and 0.003, respectively). Similarly, in OS analysis, Hb level over 12 g/dl and time elapsed after the first-line treatment that is longer than 3 months were found to be independent prognostic factors (p = 0.0001 and 0.045, respectively). In light of these findings, determining and using the parameters for which the treatment will be beneficial prior to second-line treatment can increase success rate
