Advertising Health Status in Male Sex Workers\u27 Online Ads
This brief report examines whether male sex workers mentioned any health concerns in their online ads. The analysis uses 203 male escorts\u27 online ads collected from America Online chat rooms in 2001/2002. The results indicate that only 25 percent of male escorts explicitly mentioned any health-related words or phrases in their ads. The results also show that whether a male escort mentioned health in their ad is correlated with the type of images they would like to portray and with the type of sex services they offer
Relying on Hamon's notion of the esthetics and ethics of the normative (i.e. the links, at once genetic and polemical, between the poetic and the political), this article demonstrates how the African novel uses the portrayal of the fictional trial to overcome subjugation by Tradition and discredit the political power of dictatorships whose foremost weapon, as U'Tam'si says, is " to clip the wings of justice " in every sense of the term. By means of spectacular reversals whereby the judges find themselves in the prisoner's dock if they do not flee outright, the two novels discussed, Les cancrelats by Tchicaya U'Tam'si and Giambatista Viko ou le viol du discours africain by Mbwil a Mpang Ngal, embark upon a democratic project whose outlines still remain vague and tenuous
Racial Terror Lynching in Northwest Arkansas: Recounting of the Story of Three Enslaved Males Lynched in 1856 in Washington County - Documentary
While Northwest Arkansas is considered as diverse and progressive today, it also shares a common history of racial violence, and yet almost unknown, with the Southern United-States. Little is being said about the slave plantations in Elkins, racial cleansing in Springdale, or public spectacle lynchings in Fayetteville. This is because white people who hold political and economic power also control how history is written and decide what is to be learned from their perspectives. Marginalized communities, especially Black people, have not always had agency to tell their own stories. The lynchings of three enslaved males, Anthony, Aaron, and Randall, in Washington county in 1856 for the alleged murder of a white slaveholder is a case in point. Two conflictive narratives about the events surrounding this incident emerged among white and Black residents, the most widely known being the white version. Built on the foundational research conducted by the Washington County Community Remembrance Project, a grassroots organization dedicated to memorializing the lives of the three victims, this paper is a contribution to reclaim the story of Anthony, Aaron, and Randall, by giving precedence to the oral account carried by the Black community. It also discusses the legacy of racial violence of Northwest Arkansas, the unequal power dynamic to control history in dominant-white society, and the importance of public memory of lynching
The public dream: A Jungian interpretation of The Waste Land
A Jungian interpretation of The Waste Land was undertaken in this thesis. The symbolic underpinnings of the poem were found to resonate with archetypal significance. A comparative study of key ideas developed by C. G. Jung and T. S. Eliot was adopted in order to illuminate the psychological aspects of the poem. The theme of individuation and the archetypes which accompany it were revealed in the symbolic imagery of The Waste Land. The emotional tenor of Eliot\u27s disposition and the philosophical direction of his thinking at the time The Waste Land was written were found to correlate with and parallel many of Jung\u27s ideas. More detailed studies of the archetypal symbolism in The Waste Land were recommended due to the dearth of such approaches currently available
An analysis of the causality effect of exchange rate and interest yields: a case study of Zambia
This study analyses the relationship between the US Dollar/Zambian kwacha exchange rate and the interest rate yields on the 91-day and 182-day T-bills in Zambia. Using statistical analysis of regression analysis and co integration, the study found that a long-run relationship does not hold for both 91-day and 182-day T-bills taken for any corresponding set of interest rate and exchange rate respectively. Nonetheless, the three variables taken simultaneously demonstrated that a long-run correlation exist. Following a comprehensive analysis of the results from this study, it is concluded that the statistical relationship that exists is not very significant and investors looking forward to invest in Zambia's financial markets should include other factors in order to forecast the exchange rates with regard to the changes in interest rates
Error and Misconceptions in Basic Mathematical Operations : Third and Fourth Graders in Vanuatu
The Vanuatu National Curriculum is currently enduring its reformation from an Objective base curriculum to the Outcome base approach. The previous curriculum is being substituted with the concept of the “Twin Brothers representing Vanuatu\u27s dual system of Francophone and Anglophone. This dual system had been harmonized to enhance pupil\u27s knowledge to create thinkers and problem solvers. In 2015, the new curriculum was introduced into the Education system beginning from the Grade 1 to Grade 4 levels. The other grades will progress along as the curriculum developers continued to work on them. The unique feature of this curriculum is the transition periods where pupils learned the National language (Bislama) or mother tongue at Grade 1 to Grade 3 and acquire the second language (English/French) later in Grade 4. This transition captured the interest to look into how students learning of mathematics will progress when they are transited from third to fourth grade. Thus, the purpose of this study was to discover students\u27 errors and misconceptions specifi cally in four basic mathematical operations within the transition grades. The study was conducted in three Primary schools in Port Vila. The data were collected via diagnostic test from 204 students who were in third and fourth Grade attending these schools. The test comprised of 30 questions and 40 questions sequentially, covering the four basic operations. The fi ndings revealed a wide range of frequent misconceptions students encountered when performing the four operations. Some of these misconceptions were, wrong place values in addition and subtraction, erroneous regrouping or no regrouping in addition and subtraction, addition error in multiplication, wrong multiplication and division expression and so forth. The study visualized these misconceptions as the evidence indicating the lack of comprehending fundamental concepts of basic operations, as well as the techniques in calculation of operations and their relationships and procedures among the transition graders
Decentralization in Educational Disparity of the Southeast Sulawesi Province
Educational disparity is a public issue that continues to be an endless subject matter of discourse due to the highly centralistic process of education policy in the government bureaucracy. This research aims to understand the pattern of educational disparity occurring in the islands of Southeast Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The role of political actors in the success of education policy is a vital element in the policy process, and this is apparent in the significance of the political aspect in the education policy process, which emphasizes more on political approaches rather than actual social, economic, and geographical conditions. This study was conducted using the descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques that included observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis in Buton and South Buton Regencies. Study results indicate that the education policy pattern developing in island regions is inclined to using the spatial approach with a central area priority scale, and the structural elite approach, which is political lobbying employed by structural elites (school principals) targeting education bureaucracy in the region. The education policy pattern developing in the region actually has an impact on educational disparity in the public, both at the district and regency levels. In general, the education decentralization policy has yet to run optimally on account of educational resources in the region being distributed by using the spatial and structural elite approaches which have, consequently, created a pathological behavior in the education bureaucracy that is chockfull of vested interests
