Hunting for answers: Linking lectures with the real world using a mobile treasure hunt app
Plants underpin our society providing food, fuel, medicines, clean air and water, positive mental health, and are central to biodiversity conservation. Despite this importance and an increasing need for people with plant-identification skills, many societies are becoming increasingly ignorant to the species with which they interact. To benefit both our undergraduates and the society they will enter, we applied mobile technology to improve plant identification and appreciation , while providing opportunities to practice transferable team work and verbal communication skills. Encouraging 'plant vision' will improve conservation efforts while increasing personal connections with green spaces, leading to mental health improvements for society. Summary ⢠Despite the importance of plants to human civilization, many societies are becoming increasingly ignorant to the plants that inhabit their surrounding environment. A phenomenon known as 'plant blindness'. To address plant blindness in undergraduate students we designed an outdoor activity using a mobile phone app. Our aims were to identify the level of 'plant blindness' in our students; investigate engagement with the app and activity ; determine if we can raise awareness of links between lecture content and real world scenarios; and assess the student experience as a result of the activity in large classes. ⢠The app chosen was ActionBound. Students were asked to find and photograph local examples of four plant families, along with identifying physiological benefits of features covered in lectures. Two different first year classes were exposed to this activity-Plant Science and Life on Earth. ⢠The Plant Science students (60% success rate for three families; 55 students) were less plant blind than Life on Earth students (less than 44% success rate in any of the four families; 200 students). Students engaged well with the activity with all groups submitting sensible attempts at the responses. Most students reported that the activity increased links to lecture material and all but one student reported positive experiences. ⢠Our students found the treasure hunt learning environment is a fun way to engage with the plant topics covered in lectures. In future iterations, we will more explicitly explain the links to potential careers and will address some of the logistical challenges faced in this first cohort. Research and theory for nursing and midwifery: Rethinking the nature of evidence
Background and Rationale: The rise in the principles of evidence-based medicine in the 1990s heralded a re-emerging orthodoxy in research methodologies. The view of the randomised controlled trial (RCT) as a âgold standardâ for evaluation of medical interventions has extended recently to evaluation of organisational forms and reforms and of change in complex systemsâwithin health care and in other human services. Relatively little attention has been given to the epistemological assumptions underlying such a hierarchy of research evidence.
Aims and Methods: Case studies from research in maternity care are used in this article to describe problems and limitations encountered in using RCTs to evaluate some recent policy-driven and consumer-oriented developments. These are discussed in relation to theory of knowledge and the epistemological assumptions, or paradigms, underpinning health services research. The aim in this discussion is not to advocate, or to reject, particular approaches to research but to advocate a more open and critical engagement with questions about the nature of evidence.
Findings and Discussion: Experimental approaches are of considerable value in investigating deterministic and probabilistic cause and effect relationships, and in testing often well-established but unevaluated technologies. However, little attention has been paid to contextual and cultural factors in the effects of interventions, in the culturally constructed nature of research questions themselves, or of the data on which much research is based. More complex, and less linear, approaches to methodology are needed to address these issues. A simple hierarchical approach does not represent the complexity of evidence well and should move toward a more cyclical view of knowledge development

Complex regulation of the regulator of synaptic plasticity histone deacetylase 2 in the rodent dorsal horn after peripheral injury
Histone deacetylases (HDACs), HDAC2 in particular, have been shown to regulate various forms of learning and memory. Since cognitive processes share mechanisms with spinal nociceptive signalling, we decided to investigate the HDAC2 expression in the dorsal horn after peripheral injury. Using immunohistochemistry, we found that spinal HDAC2 was mainly seen in neurons and astrocytes, with neuronal expression in naĂŻve tissue 2.6Â times greater than that in astrocytes. Cysteine (S)-nitrosylation of HDAC2 releases HDAC2 gene silencing and is controlled by nitric oxide (NO). A duration of 48Â h after intraplantar injection of complete Freund's adjuvant, there was an ipsilateral increase in the most important NO-producing enzyme in pain states, nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), accompanied by an increase in HDAC2 S-nitrosylation. Moreover, a subset of nNOS-positive neurons expressed cFos, a known target of HDAC2, suggesting that derepression of cFos expression following HDAC2 S-nitrosylation might occur after noxious stimulation. We saw no change in global HDAC2 expression in both short- and long-term pain states. However, HDAC2 was increased in astrocytes 7Â days after neuropathic injury suggesting that HDAC2 might inhibit astrocytic gene expression in neuropathic pain states. All together, our results indicate that the epigenetic regulation of transcriptional programmes in the dorsal horn after injury is cell specific. Moreover, the prominent role of NO in persistent pain states suggests that HDAC2 S-nitrosylation could play a crucial role in the regulation of gene expression leading to hypersensitivity. Our manuscript describes for the first time the regulation of the memory regulator histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) in the superficial dorsal horn of adult rats following peripheral injury. Our cell-specific approach has revealed a complex pattern of expression of spinal HDAC2 that depends on the injury and the cell type, suggesting a sophisticated regulation of gene expression by HDAC2
Effects of environmental enrichment on white matter glial responses in a mouse model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion
Background:
This study was designed to explore the beneficial effects of environmental enrichment (EE) on white matter glial changes in a mouse model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion induced by bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS).
Methods:
A total of 74 wild-type male C57BL/6J mice underwent BCAS or sham surgery. One week after surgery, the mice were randomly assigned into three different groups having varied amounts of EEâstandard housing with no EE conditions (std), limited exposure with 3 h EE a day (3 h) and full-time exposure to EE (full) for 12 weeks. At 16 weeks after BCAS surgery, behavioural and cognitive function were assessed prior to euthanasia. Brain tissues were analysed for the degree of gliosis including morphological changes in astrocytes and microglia.
Results:
Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (or BCAS) increased clasmatodendrocytes (damaged astrocytes) with disruption of aquaporin-4 immunoreactivity and an increased degree of microglial activation/proliferation. BCAS also impaired behavioural and cognitive function. These changes were significantly attenuated, by limited exposure compared to full-time exposure to EE.
Conclusions:
Our results suggest that moderate or limited exposure to EE substantially reduced glial damage/activation. Our findings also suggest moderate rather than continuous exposure to EE is beneficial for patients with subcortical ischaemic vascular dementia characterised by white matter disease-related inflammation
Basins of attraction on random topography
We investigate the consequences of fluid flowing on a continuous surface upon
the geometric and statistical distribution of the flow. We find that the
ability of a surface to collect water by its mere geometrical shape is
proportional to the curvature of the contour line divided by the local slope.
Consequently, rivers tend to lie in locations of high curvature and flat
slopes. Gaussian surfaces are introduced as a model of random topography. For
Gaussian surfaces the relation between convergence and slope is obtained
analytically. The convergence of flow lines correlates positively with drainage
area, so that lower slopes are associated with larger basins. As a consequence,
we explain the observed relation between the local slope of a landscape and the
area of the drainage basin geometrically. To some extent, the slope-area
relation comes about not because of fluvial erosion of the landscape, but
because of the way rivers choose their path. Our results are supported by
numerically generated surfaces as well as by real landscapes
No measure for culture? Value in the new economy
This paper explores articulations of the value of investment in culture and the arts through a critical discourse analysis of policy documents, reports and academic commentary since 1997. It argues that in this period, discourses around the value of culture have moved from a focus on the direct economic contributions of the culture industries to their indirect economic benefits. These indirect benefits are discussed here under three main headings: creativity and innovation, employability, and social inclusion. These are in turn analysed in terms of three forms of capital: human, social and cultural. The paper concludes with an analysis of this discursive shift through the lens of autonomist Marxist concerns with the labour of social reproduction. It is our argument that, in contemporary policy discourses on culture and the arts, the government in the UK is increasingly concerned with the use of culture to form the social in the image of capital. As such, we must turn our attention beyond the walls of the factory in order to understand the contemporary capitalist production of value and resistance to it. </jats:p
Direct isotopic evidence of biogenic methane production and efflux from beneath a temperate glacier
The base of glaciers and ice sheets provide environments suitable for the production of methane. High pressure conditions beneath the impermeable âcapâ of overlying ice promote entrapment of methane reserves that can be released to the atmosphere during ice thinning and meltwater evacuation. However, contemporary glaciers and ice sheets are rarely accounted for as methane contributors through field measurements. Here, we present direct field-based evidence of methane production and release from beneath the Icelandic glacier SĂłlheimajĂśkull, where geothermal activity creates sub-oxic conditions suited to methane production and preservation along the meltwater flow path. Methane production at the glacier bed (48 tonnes per day, or 39âmM CH4 mâ2 dayâ1), and evasion to the atmosphere from the proglacial stream (41 tonnes per day, or 32âM CH4 mâ2 dayâ1) indicates considerable production and release to the atmosphere during the summer melt season. Isotopic signatures (â60.2â° to â7.6â° for δ13CCH4 and â324.3â° to +161.1â° for DCH4), support a biogenic signature within waters emerging from the subglacial environment. Temperate glacial methane production and release may thus be a significant and hitherto unresolved contributor of a potent greenhouse gas to the atmosphere
Between overt and covert research: concealment and disclosure in an ethnographic study of commercial hospitality
This article examines the ways in which problems of concealment emerged in an ethnographic study of a suburban bar and considers how disclosure of the research aims, the recruitment of informants, and elicitation of information was negotiated throughout the fieldwork. The case study demonstrates how the social context and the relationships with specific informants determined overtness or covertness in the research. It is argued that the existing literature on covert research and covert methods provides an inappropriate frame of reference with which to understand concealment in fieldwork. The article illustrates why concealment is sometimes necessary, and often unavoidable, and concludes that the criticisms leveled against covert methods should not stop the fieldworker from engaging in research that involves covertness
