AVALIAÇÃO DAS TAXAS DE CRESCIMENTO DE Farfantepenaeus paulensis Pérez-Farfante, 1967 EM VIVEIROS DE CULTIVO
fazenda localizada no Estado do Paraná, Brasil.
Evaluation of the growth rates of Farfantepenaeus paulensis Pérez-Farfante, 1967 in ponds
Abstract
Evaluation of the growth rates of the shrimp Farfantepaeneus paulensis has been
carried out along the year, in a shrimp farm located at the State of Paraná, Brazil. Quantification of the
growth rates in relation to the absolute weight gain was performed as a growth index measured as g
per week and as percentage per week, in the latter case in regard to the relative weight gain. This
growth index allows the quantification of the shrimp growth independently of its or the culture age.
Analysis of the growth index showed that F. paulensis displays a gradual delay in its growth rhythm
along its development. Along the year, the cultivated shrimps showed the largest growth rates during
November and December, falling by about half during the Winter, particularly during July, when the
water temperature averaged 18ºC. The reduction of the shrimp growth rates observed at the end of
the cultivation was larger than the ones quantified in the natural environment of Lagoa dos Patos
(DINCAO, 1984; DINCAO and CALAZANS, 1978), a fact that can be explained by a probable
nutritional deficiency of the feeds available for the shrimp culture

ESTADO DA ARTE DAS PESQUISAS COM O CARANGUEJO-UÇÁ, Ucides cordatus
A member of Ocypodidae, the mangrove land crab, Ucides cordatus, is endemic to the Atlantic Coast of the Americas. It has considerable economic value to underpriviledged communities, which depend on it as a source of income and food. Ucides cordatus is considered as one of the most important biological components of mangrove ecosystems, particularly due to its role in the cycling of organic matter. Possibly as a consequence of the intense harvesting, the destruction of its habitats – the mangroves – and disease, there has been a decrease in the fishery stocks of the mangrove crab throughout the Brazilian coast. However, in spite of the cultural, ecological, and socio-economic importance of the species, the number of scientific studies on the mangrove land crab is still limited. The aim of the present study is to identify and relat the main studies published on the species until 2007.Pertencente a Ocypodidae, o caranguejo-uçá, Ucides cordatus, é uma espécie endêmica da costa atlântica do Continente Americano.
Use of whole soy lecithin in diets with energy concentrate from starchy or lipid sources for steers
ABSTRACT Diets with high energy density and additives that enhance energy use are necessary for finishing feedlot cattle. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance, ingestive behavior, apparent digestibility of the diet and the carcass traits of feedlot steers fed concentrates from different energy sources, one derived from starchy sources and the other, from lipid sources, combined or not with whole soy lecithin, at a dose of 40 g animal day-1. The experimental design was completely randomized blocks, in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. The combination of whole soy lecithin with the lipid energy source concentrate increased the dry matter digestibility and the carcass yield of the animals (76.03% and 57.20%, respectively). The lipid energy source concentrate showed higher ether extract digestibility and animals fed on it had higher carcass yield (84.18% and 56.85%, respectively). Whole soy lecithin promoted a reduction in fecal pH due to a greater fermentation of carbohydrates and fatty acids in the intestinal lumen. Using whole soy lecithin combined with energy concentrate from a lipid source is recommended due to its improvements in the use of the diet and in the carcass yield
Impact of age at calving on lactation and reproduction performance at the first-parity holsteins
The aim of this study was to determinethe impact of age at first calving (AFC) on lactationand reproduction performance in dairy cows. Thirtytwofirst-parity Holsteins were distributed in twogroups by AFC: 16 first-parity females were namedas “Younger”, with AFC lower than 700 days, and 16 were classified as “Older”, with AFC above700 days. Lactation and reproduction data wereanalyzed using GLM procedure from SAS. Firstlactationcows that calved before 700 days of agedisplayead lower (P<0,05) milk yields (9,900 vs.10,874 kg), lower (P<0,05) 3,5% fat-corrected milkyields (10,341 vs. 11,618 kg), lower (P<0,05) fatyields (373 vs. 425 kg), and lower (P<0,05) proteinyields (279 vs. 307 kg) than first-parity Holsteinsthat calved after 700 days of age. There were nodifferences between the two groups of AFC forfat and protein contents: 3,80% vs. 3,96% fat and2,81% vs. 2,81% protein, respectively for Youngerand Older females.
Testing a molecular protocol to monitor the presence of golden mussel larvae (Limnoperna fortunei) in plankton samples
The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei, Mollusca: Mytilidae) is an emerging invasive species in freshwater environments in South America, causing extensive environmental and economic impacts. A molecular method to detect larvae of the golden mussel in plankton samples has been recently developed and holds promise for becoming an important way to monitor the expansion of golden mussel populations. In the present study, we conduct, for the first time, field tests of this method by comparing its performance with alternative sampling efforts (microscopy and manual search for adults). In addition, we test different modifications of the molecular method to deal with PCR inhibition in environmental samples. The results indicate that the molecular method is very efficient, being faster and more sensitive that microscopy methods. Therefore, the molecular method tested in the present study can represent an invaluable tool in large-scale monitoring efforts of the golden mussel throughout its introduced range.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
