    The effect of choice-feeding from 7 weeks of age on the production characteristics of laying hens

    Day-old Amberlink pullets were fed chicken starter mash for the first seven weeks of age. Group A was choice-fed with pelleted protein concentrate, whole yellow maize and limestone powder from seven to 16 weeks of age. Group B received the same diet as group A, but the protein concentrate was fed in mash form. Group C (control treatment) received a pullet grower diet in mash form. The pullets were placed in individual laying cages from 16-80 weeks of age. The choice-fed groups received feedstuffs from three separate troughs (i.e. whole maize, protein concentrate and limestone powder), and group C received a layer diet in mash form. Hens offered the choice-fed diets were heavier (P < 0.05) at 16 weeks and at first egg than hens fed the control diet, even though they ate less food (group A: 66.1 g/d; group B: 66.4 g/d) than the control group (68.2 g/d). During the laying period (16-80 weeks), hens offered the choice-fed diets laid significantly (P < 0.01) heavier eggs, eggs with thicker shells, eggs with darker yolks and had better food conversion ratios than those fed the control diet. No significant differences between treatments were observed for eggs laid per hen, food consumed per day or Haugh unit score. Choice feeding was found to be beneficial for laying hens, and it appeared that early commencement of the regime was necessary for optimum output.     Analytic and Asymptotic Methods for Nonlinear Singularity Analysis: a Review and Extensions of Tests for the Painlev\'e Property

    The integrability (solvability via an associated single-valued linear problem) of a differential equation is closely related to the singularity structure of its solutions. In particular, there is strong evidence that all integrable equations have the Painlev\'e property, that is, all solutions are single-valued around all movable singularities. In this expository article, we review methods for analysing such singularity structure. In particular, we describe well known techniques of nonlinear regular-singular-type analysis, i.e. the Painlev\'e tests for ordinary and partial differential equations. Then we discuss methods of obtaining sufficiency conditions for the Painlev\'e property. Recently, extensions of \textit{irregular} singularity analysis to nonlinear equations have been achieved. Also, new asymptotic limits of differential equations preserving the Painlev\'e property have been found. We discuss these also.Comment: 40 pages in LaTeX2e.     Singular Casimir Elements of the Euler Equation and Equilibrium Points

    The problem of the nonequivalence of the sets of equilibrium points and energy-Casimir extremal points, which occurs in the noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation of equations describing ideal fluid and plasma dynamics, is addressed in the context of the Euler equation for an incompressible inviscid fluid. The problem is traced to a Casimir deficit, where Casimir elements constitute the center of the Lie-Poisson algebra underlying the Hamiltonian formulation, and this leads to a study of the symplectic operator defining the Poisson bracket. The kernel of the symplectic operator, for this typical example of an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system for media in terms of Eulerian variables, is analyzed. For two-dimensional flows, a rigorously solvable system is formulated. The nonlinearity of the Euler equation makes the symplectic operator inhomogeneous on phase space (the function space of the state variable), and it is seen that this creates a singularity where the nullity of the symplectic operator (the "dimension" of the center) changes. Singular Casimir elements stemming from this singularity are unearthed using a generalization of the functional derivative that occurs in the Poisson bracket

    Wearable Biomonitoring Platform for the Assessment of Stress and its Impact on Cognitive Performance of Firefighters: An Experimental Study

    Background: Stress is a complex process with an impact on health and performance. The use of wearable sensor-based monitoring systems offers interesting opportunities for advanced health care solutions for stress analysis. Considering the stressful nature of firefighting and its importance for the community’s safety, this study was conducted for firefighters. Objectives: A biomonitoring platform was designed, integrating different biomedical systems to enable the acquisition of real time Electrocardiogram (ECG), computation of linear Heart Rate Variability (HRV) features and collection of perceived stress levels. This platform was tested using an experimental protocol, designed to understand the effect of stress on firefighter’s cognitive performance, and whether this effect is related to the autonomic response to stress. Method: The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was used as a testing platform along with a 2-Choice Reaction Time Task. Linear HRV features from the participants were acquired using an wearable ECG. Self-reports were used to assess perceived stress levels. Results: The TSST produced significant changes in some HRV parameters (AVNN, SDNN and LF/HF) and subjective measures of stress, which recovered after the stress task. Although these short-term changes in HRV showed a tendency to normalize, an impairment on cognitive performance was found after performing the stress event. Conclusion: Current findings suggested that stress compromised cognitive performance and caused a measurable change in autonomic balance. Our wearable biomonitoring platform proved to be a useful tool for stress assessment and quantification. Future studies will implement this biomonitoring platform for the analysis of stress in ecological settings
