A new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions: Black hole, Birkhoff's theorem and C-function
We present a new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions which has second
order traced field equations, analogous to BHT new massive gravity in three
dimensions. Moreover, for static spherically symmetric spacetimes all the field
equations are of second order, and the theory admits a new asymptotically
locally flat black hole. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of this solution,
study its thermodynamical properties, and show the existence of a C-function
for the theory following the arguments of Anber and Kastor (arXiv:0802.1290
[hep-th]) in pure Lovelock theories. Finally, we include the
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and cosmological terms and we find new asymptotically AdS
black holes at the point where the three maximally symmetric solutions of the
theory coincide. These black holes may also possess a Cauchy horizon.Comment: 21 pages, no figures, V2: two appendices and some references added,

Limits to Sympathetic Evaporative Cooling of a Two-Component Fermi Gas
We find a limit cycle in a quasi-equilibrium model of evaporative cooling of
a two-component fermion gas. The existence of such a limit cycle represents an
obstruction to reaching the quantum ground state evaporatively. We show that
evaporatively the \beta\mu ~ 1. We speculate that one may be able to cool an
atomic fermi gas further by photoassociating dimers near the bottom of the

The effect of thermal annealing on the properties of Al-AlOx-Al single electron tunneling transistors
The effect of thermal annealing on the properties of Al-AlOx-Al single
electron tunneling transistors is reported. After treatment of the devices by
annealing processes in forming gas atmosphere at different temperatures and for
different times, distinct and reproducible changes of their resistance and
capacitance values were found. According to the temperature regime, we observed
different behaviors as regards the resistance changes, namely the tendency to
decrease the resistance by annealing at T = 200 degree C, but to increase the
resistance by annealing at T = 400 degree C. We attribute this behavior to
changes in the aluminum oxide barriers of the tunnel junctions. The good
reproducibility of these effects with respect to the changes observed allows
the proper annealing treatment to be used for post-process tuning of tunnel
junction parameters. Also, the influence of the annealing treatment on the
noise properties of the transistors at low frequency was investigated. In no
case did the noise figures in the 1/f-regime show significant changes.Comment: 6 pages, 7 eps-figure
Dynamic shear suppression in quantum phase space
© 2019 American Physical Society. All rights reserved.Classical phase space flow is inviscid. Here we show that in quantum phase space Wigner's probability current J can be effectively viscous. This results in shear suppression in quantum phase space dynamics which enforces Zurek's limit for the minimum size scale of spotty structures that develop dynamically. Quantum shear suppression is given by gradients of the quantum terms of J's vorticity. Used as a new measure of quantum dynamics applied to several evolving closed conservative 1D bound state systems, we find that shear suppression explains the saturation at Zurek's scale limit and additionally singles out special quantum states.Peer reviewe
All unitary cubic curvature gravities in D dimensions
We construct all the unitary cubic curvature gravity theories built on the
contractions of the Riemann tensor in D -dimensional (anti)-de Sitter
spacetimes. Our construction is based on finding the equivalent quadratic
action for the general cubic curvature theory and imposing ghost and tachyon
freedom, which greatly simplifies the highly complicated problem of finding the
propagator of cubic curvature theories in constant curvature backgrounds. To
carry out the procedure we have also classified all the unitary quadratic
models. We use our general results to study the recently found cubic curvature
theories using different techniques and the string generated cubic curvature
gravity model. We also study the scattering in critical gravity and give its

STORIES OF TEACHERS HOLDING MULTIPLE ROLES OUTSIDE TEACHING: CONSEQUENCES AND OPPORTUNITIES
Abstract:The research study focused on the stories of teachers holding multiple roles outside teaching: consequences and opportunities, their lived experiences, how they cope with their present situation, and the insights they can share with other teachers who will experience the same experiences they have. This study used the qualitative phenomenological method of research to explore in depth the experiences, coping strategies, and personal insights that can be shared by the participants. The research study purposely identified nine (9) teachers of the senior high schools (6 for the focus group discussion and 3 for the in-depth interview) who are presently holding multiple roles while teaching in the three (3) identified national high schools in Davao Region. The results showed that the participants have their own share of good and bad experiences while holding multiple roles, stating that they encountered time management issues and expressed their struggles and stress but felt opportune with the responsibility they have at present. As their coping strategies, they expressed that resilience is accepting the things to be in the new reality, time and priorities are vital, being driven by it, learning, enjoying and loving the work and consulting and sharing thoughts with peers. Explored three strategies and methods specifically self-determination, perseverance, and sharing ideas and resources with peers. Also revealed are the insights that can be shared with others: do the best you can until you know better, in the midst of difficulty, lies opportunity and teamwork makes dream work. Article visualizations
Stellar and gaseous abundances in M82
The near infrared (IR) absorption spectra of starburst galaxies show several
atomic and molecular lines from red supergiants which can be used to infer
reliable stellar abundances. The metals locked in stars give a picture of the
galaxy metallicity prior to the last burst of star formation. The enrichment of
the new generation of stars born in the last burst can be traced by measuring
the hot gas in the X-rays. For the first time detailed stellar abundances in
the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82 have been obtained. They are
compared with those of the hot gas as derived from an accurate re-analysis of
the XMM and Chandra nuclear X-ray spectra. The cool stars and the hot gas
suggest [Fe/H]=-0.35+/-0.2 dex, and an overall [Si,Mg/Fe] enhancement by 0.4
and 0.5 dex, respectively. This is consistent with a major chemical enrichment
by SNe II explosions in recursive bursts on short timescales. Oxygen is more
puzzling to interpret since it is enhanced by 0.3 dex in stars and depleted by
0.2 dex in the hot gas. None of the standard enrichment scenarios can fully
explain such a behavior when compared with the other alpha-elements.Comment: APJ, in pres
Generalised Decision Level Ensemble Method for Classifying Multi-media Data
In recent decades, multimedia data have been commonly generated and used in various domains, such as in healthcare and social media due to their ability of capturing rich information. But as they are unstructured and separated, how to fuse and integrate multimedia datasets and then learn from them eectively have been a main challenge to machine learning. We present a novel generalised decision level ensemble method (GDLEM) that combines the multimedia datasets at decision level. After extracting features from each of multimedia datasets separately, the method trains models independently on each media dataset and then employs a generalised selection function to choose the appropriate models to construct a heterogeneous ensemble. The selection function is dened as a weighted combination of two criteria: the accuracy of individual models and the diversity among the models. The framework is tested on multimedia data and compared with other heterogeneous ensembles. The results show that the GDLEM is more exible and eective
Methionine and Tryptophan Play Different Modulatory Roles in the European Seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Innate Immune Response and Apoptosis Signaling—An In Vitro Study
The range of metabolic pathways that are dependent on a proper supply of specific amino acids (AA) unveils their importance in the support of health. AA play central roles in key pathways vital for immune support and individual AA supplementation has shown to be able to modulate fish immunity. In vitro trials are important tools to evaluate the immunomodulatory role of AA, and the present study was conceived to evaluate methionine and tryptophan roles in immune-related mechanisms aiming to understand their effects in leucocyte functioning and AA pathways. For that purpose, head-kidney leucocytes were isolated and a primary cell culture established. The effect of methionine or tryptophan surplus on cell viability was assessed. Medium L-15 10% FBS without AA addition (0.5mM of L-methionine, 0.1 mM of L-tryptophan) was used as control. To that, L-methionine or L-tryptophan were supplemented at 1 and 2 times (M1x or M2x, and T1x or T2x). Nitric oxide, ATP, total antioxidant capacity, and immune-related genes were evaluated in response to lipopolysaccharides extracted from Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida or UV-inactivated bacteria). Moreover, caspase 3 activity and apoptosis-related genes were evaluated in response to the apoptosis-inducing protein, AIP56. Distinct roles in leucocytes’ immune response were observed, with contrasting outcomes in the modulation of individual pathways. Methionine surplus improved cell viability, polyamine production, and methionine-related genes expression in response to an inflammatory agent. Also, methionine supplementation lowered signals of apoptosis by AIP56, presenting lower caspase 3 activity and higher il1ß and nf-¿b expression. Cells cultured in tryptophan supplemented medium presented signals of an attenuated inflammatory response, with decreased ATP and enhanced expression of anti-inflammatory and catabolism-related genes in macrophages. In response to AIP56, leucocytes cultured in a tryptophan-rich medium presented lower resilience to the toxin, higher caspase 3 activity and expression of caspase 8, and lower expression of several genes, including nf-¿b and p65. Stationary motion of a self gravitating toroidal incompressible liquid layer
We consider an incompressible fluid contained in a toroidal stratum which is
only subjected to Newtonian self-attraction. Under the assumption of
infinitesimal tickness of the stratum we show the existence of stationary
motions during which the stratum is approximatly a round torus (with radii r, R
and R>>r) that rotates around its axis and at the same time rolls on itself.
Therefore each particle of the stratum describes an helix-like trajectory
around the circumference of radius R that connects the centers of the cross
sections of the torus
