Variational and Potential Formulation for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations
There is recent interest in finding a potential formulation for Stochastic
Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs). The rationale behind this idea lies in
obtaining all the dynamical information of the system under study from one
single expression. In this Letter we formally provide a general Lagrangian
formalism for SPDEs using the Hojman et al. method. We show that it is possible
to write the corresponding effective potential starting from an s-equivalent
Lagrangean, and that this potential is able to reproduce all the dynamics of
the system, once a special differential operator has been applied. This
procedure can be used to study the complete time evolution and spatial
inhomogeneities of the system under consideration, and is also suitable for the
statistical mechanics description of the problem. Keywords: stochastic partial
differential equations, variational formulation, effective potential. PACS:

Kepler-47: A Transiting Circumbinary Multi-Planet System
We report the detection of Kepler-47, a system consisting of two planets
orbiting around an eclipsing pair of stars. The inner and outer planets have
radii 3.0 and 4.6 times that of the Earth, respectively. The binary star
consists of a Sun-like star and a companion roughly one-third its size,
orbiting each other every 7.45 days. With an orbital period of 49.5 days,
eighteen transits of the inner planet have been observed, allowing a detailed
characterization of its orbit and those of the stars. The outer planet's
orbital period is 303.2 days, and although the planet is not Earth-like, it
resides within the classical "habitable zone", where liquid water could exist
on an Earth-like planet. With its two known planets, Kepler-47 establishes that
close binary stars can host complete planetary systems.Comment: To appear on Science Express August 28, 11 pages, 3 figures, one

Size of the Vela Pulsar's Radio Emission Region: 500 km
We use interstellar scattering of the Vela pulsar to determine the size of
its emission region. From interferometric phase variations on short baselines,
we find that radio-wave scattering broadens the source by 3.4+/-0.3
milliarcseconds along the major axis at position angle 81+/-3 degrees. The
ratio of minor axis to major axis is 0.51+/-0.03. Comparison of angular and
temporal broadening indicates that the scattering material lies in the Vela-X
supernova remnant surrounding the pulsar. From the modulation of the pulsar's
scintillation on very short baselines, we infer a size of 500 km for the
pulsar's emission region. We suggest that radio-wave refraction within the
pulsar's magnetosphere may plausibly explain this size.Comment: 14 pages, includes 2 figures. Also available at:

Observation of highly dispersive bands in pure thin film C
While long-theorized, the direct observation of multiple highly dispersive
C valence bands has eluded researchers for more than two decades due to
a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Here we report a realization of
multiple highly dispersive (330-520 meV) valence bands in pure thin film
C on a novel substrate--the three-dimensional topological insulator
BiSe--through the use of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy
(ARPES) and first-principles calculations. The effects of this novel substrate
reducing C rotational disorder are discussed. Our results provide
important considerations for past and future band structure studies as well as
the increasingly popular C electronic device applications, especially
those making use of heterostructures.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Drawing Boundaries
In “On Drawing Lines on a Map” (1995), I suggested that the different ways we have of drawing lines on maps open up a new perspective on ontology, resting on a distinction between two sorts of boundaries: fiat and bona fide. “Fiat” means, roughly: human-demarcation-induced. “Bona fide” means, again roughly: a boundary constituted by some real physical discontinuity. I presented a general typology of boundaries based on this opposition and showed how it generates a corresponding typology of the different sorts of objects which boundaries determine or demarcate. In this paper, I describe how the theory of fiat boundaries has evolved since 1995, how it has been applied in areas such as property law and political geography, and how it is being used in contemporary work in formal and applied ontology, especially within the framework of Basic Formal Ontology
Persistence of airborne tree pollen from the Cupressaceae family during the last decade in the city of Bahia Blanca
Airborne pollen is a major contributor to allergic respiratory diseases. However, the literature on patterns and seasonality of specific pollen types mainly comes from northern hemisphere and developed regions, limiting our ability to extrapolate these findings to other geographical locations. With this research letter, our aim is to contribute to the current knowledge of aerobiology by analyzing the decade-long patterns of airborne tree pollen in the city of Bahia Blanca, Argentina. In general, we found late winter to early spring as the period with the highest Cupressaceae pollen counts. In 2020, the average pollen count during July through September was 78.81 (SD 79.70), the highest recorded during the last 10 years. These months had varying pollen concentrations from moderate (15-89 grains/m3 of air) to high (90-1499 grains/m3 of air). Regardless of such variation, August had consistently been the month with the highest peak concentrations from 2010 to 2020 (61.2, SD 57.3), followed by September (27.1, SD 20.3). We did not find any month with very high (>1500 grains/m3 of air) peak concentration. Further studies need to be done to expand our knowledge on aerobiology to characterize specific pollen sub-types and determine the exact allergenic potential of airborne pollen in different regions.Fil: Ramon, German D.. HAT-P-44b, HAT-P-45b, and HAT-P-46b: Three Transiting Hot Jupiters in Possible Multi-Planet Systems
We report the discovery by the HATNet survey of three new transiting
extrasolar planets orbiting moderately bright (V=13.2, 12.8 and 11.9) stars.
The planets have orbital periods of 4.3012, 3.1290, and 4.4631 days, masses of
0.39, 0.89, and 0.49 Mjup, and radii of 1.28, 1.43, and 1.28 Rjup. The stellar
hosts have masses of 0.94, 1.26, and 1.28 Msun. Each system shows significant
systematic variations in its residual radial velocities indicating the possible
presence of additional components. Based on its Bayesian evidence, the
preferred model for HAT-P-44 consists of two planets, including the transiting
component, with the outer planet having a period of 220 d and a minimum mass of
1.6 Mjup. Due to aliasing we cannot rule out an alternative solution for the
outer planet having a period of 438 d and a minimum mass of 3.7 Mjup. For
HAT-P-45 at present there is not enough data to justify the additional free
parameters included in a multi-planet model, in this case a single-planet
solution is preferred, but the required jitter of 22.5 +- 6.3 m/s is relatively
high for a star of this type. For HAT-P-46 the preferred solution includes a
second planet having a period of 78 d and a minimum mass of 2.0 Mjup, however
the preference for this model over a single-planet model is not very strong.
While substantial uncertainties remain as to the presence and/or properties of
the outer planetary companions in these systems, the inner transiting planets
are well characterized with measured properties that are fairly robust against
changes in the assumed models for the outer planets. Continued RV monitoring is
necessary to fully characterize these three planetary systems, the properties
of which may have important implications for understanding the formation of hot
Jupiters.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, 14 tables, submitted to A
